Need help with itinerary!

I need help preferably from a local who knows where everything is. My husband and I are flying into Harrisburg PA with our son. We have to take him to Woodward skate camp the next day. Once we do that, my husband and I will have one week to explore. I would definitely like to visit Philadelphia, see the Amish, and I know nothing else about Pennsylvania! Can anybody give me an idea of what to do that week? Also what can we do With an 11-year-old between Harrisburg and Woodward? We get in at 8:30 AM and he doesn’t go to camp till the next day. Thank you!

You might want to check out Penns Cave in Centre Hall, an all water cavern. You could also walk around the campus of Penn State, checK out the Arboretum and definitely get ice cream at the Berkey Creamery.

Another option would be to spend some time in Hershey before heading to Woodward. The most obvious is Hersheypark but you really need a day to make the most of that experience. You could visit any of the following: Chocolate World (advance reservations required), The Hershey Story, The Hershey Gardens (most kids like the butterfly atrium), the Antique Auto Museum, and ZooAmerica.

In Lancaster, I would normally recommend the guided tour offered by the Mennonite Information Center; however, they are not currently being offered. You might want to continually check the website in the event that changes.

https://mennoinfocenter.org/guided-tours/

The Amish Farm & House and The Amish Village will give you a "tourist" experience, there are no Amish involved.

Kitchen Kettle Village is a good tourist stop. Make sure you get some jams & jellies and Lapp Valley Farms ice cream is very good.

Countryside Roadstand in Ronks is Amish owned and operated. They offer crafts and delicious soft pretzels, soft ice cream, and homemade root beer and birch beer.

Strasburg Railroad is nice to relax and enjoy a train ride in Lancaster County.

Note that all Amish and Mennonite businesses will be closed on Sunday.

For information on Philadelphia, I would suggest a separate post in the Philadelphia forum.

If you enjoy nature & hiking, you might want to check out the PA Grand Canyon near Wellsboro, PA. There are state parks on both rims. The website below gives thorough information about the area. For lodging, the Historic Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro is an option, there are also other lodging options on the website.

On the way to Philadelphia, you might want to visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square. The gardens are beautiful and there are various events & performances, check the dates for your time of visit.

As usual, I agree with all flyeagles suggestions regarding Lancaster County and the Amish Since the Mennonite Information Center is not doing tours yet you might consider Old Order Amish Tours www.oldorderamishtours.com

The quide drives in her car while you are in yours communicating with you by walkie talkie. She usually stops at about 3 Amish businesses/farms .

For Longwood Gardens you should budget a whole day. The minimum time would be at least 4 hours.

The Turkey Hill experience might be fun with an 11 year old. (lots of samples there).

If you don’t mind driving, hop on 83 and spend a day or two in Baltimore. Lots to do there.
