Guesses as to When Resorts will be more Normal?

Trying to plan a trip for the fall, but holding back. We'll have had our vaccines, so I'm not worried too much about Covid, except for the way resorts are running right now. I know they can only have a certain capacity, so a lot of things are closed. It would be fine if it was just that certain restaurants were open - just not every day - but that doesn't always seem to be the case. I'm looking at adult only places and I have seen that the fruit smoothy bar at CRT isn't open, and neither is the beach bar at Secrets. While this doesn't seem like enough to ruin a trip, perhaps - I really want to feel like I'm getting most of the full experience - especially when it comes to the beach bar. (I'd probably only want a juice drink at the beach if it's closed. Then I can see myself looking at that closed smoothy bar every single day, and really wishing I could have one, Lol) I know nobody can tell me anything for sure - and your guess is probably as good as mine - but I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or guesses as to whether fall could be more normal. Also the fact that they only have part of their staffs working, which is sad, and in many cases doesn't seem to be enough staff.

I'll bite! My opinion will probably not be too popular, but I don't think resorts will go back to normal at all this year. Today, cases worldwide are the highest they have ever been (per WHO). In addition to that, the P1 variant has taken over all of South America which is hop and skip from the Riviera Maya, so it's just a matter of time. I wouldn't be planning anything especially for the fall/winter since the drug companies are trying to get ahead of the viruses with a booster shot for the fall. I based my opinion on what has happen since December 2019 when the virus was first revealed, even though it was discovered sometime prior. Basically, mankind has done the same thing, which is not much to stop spreading it.

I tend to agree with AA.

Resorts are likely to open up everything until it makes financial sense to do do. With low occupancy it doesn't make sense right now. Us, resorts are not fully staffed yet. They simply don't have the manpower to open everything up.

Perhaps when we go Green on to Stoplight Spectrum we might see more openings but I believe it's not going to be until the occupancy rates go up substantially.

I also think the mask mandate, social distancing, temperature taking and the need to use antibacterial gel prior to entering places will be with us for quite some time no matter what for we are on the Spectrum.

Mexico has stated that it will be early/spring 2022 for their population to be fully vaccinated (not including boosters)

I am thinking 1+ years

Ugh, yes - you are all probably right. So if I go in the fall anyway - do I choose a less expensive resort - because after all, I'll be going more for the pool and beach, or do I pay more for a more upscale place, and either way not get the full all inclusive experience. Decisions, decisions. Right now I'm looking at CRT, for an adult only beach experience, which is budget. (I would do the upgrade) Or maybe Secrets Akumal, where I don't know if I'd do the upgrade. In both places, I have read reviews where lines are long and their doesn't seem to be enough staff. Well - I'm off to have my first vaccine today - so I'm not really ready to book quite yet. I'll probably be on here for another month or so, going back and forth, and driving everyone crazy until I make a decision.

Not sure what prices look like for fall, but for summer even the less expensive properties seem to be running high. Airfare is a large part of package increases but rooms themselves were, too, when I was browsing around. And maybe it’s bc of resorts only being able to book 60%, but I had difficulty finding specific room categories even for our April trip. I’m typically a stickler for “club level ocean view/front” and options were dwindling quickly. I say book whenever you feel vaccinatedly-comfortable and not fret too much on the other stuff bc I think we are a long way away from “Cancun normal”.

Sunny - I'd book somewhere cheaper but make sure it's fully cancellable/refundable so if things are looking up by the fall, you can upgrade somewhere nicer.

OR, what I'd really do if Canada wasn't such a mess right now, is book a cheapie for the fall and if things get better COVID-wise, I'd book a second vacation!!

The problem is even with 1% mortality rate, a population on 300,000,000 would see 3 million deaths, plus more hospitalized. The measures are to prevent spread, to get a vaccine, to help deaths/hospitalizations come down. So the number of people needing care is at a level hospitals can tend to.

I am vaccinated. Still taking precautions. But, we scheduled a trip for June.
