Terra Nova NP to Bonavista

We are spending 3 weeks in NL in August. We plan to camp at Terra Nova NP for several days. Is the Bonavista Peninsula a reasonable day trip from TNNP or should we plan to stay on the Peninsula? Camping seems pretty sparse, but is one day enough to give us a good taste of the area? thanks.

Yeah, Bonavista is quiet and quaint. A good solid day will give you enough of a taste for the area, IMO

I have to disagree with the previous post Terra Nova to Bonavista is roughly 2 hours using the quickest route, not necessarily the most scenic routes. There’s a lot to see on the Peninsula and most visitors plan to stay 2-3 nights. You will want to experience Trinity, Bonavista, and Elliston (at the very least) and I couldn’t do all that in just a day trip. But with careful planning you might hit a few highlights in a day. Tour buses seem to do this all the time.

"but is one day enough to give us a good taste of the area?"

In as much as an afternoon would give you a good taste of Paris, sure. You'd have fun, see some cool things, get the general vibe, have some nice memories and pics. But if you're mapping out a 3 week trip to Newfoundland then only one day (a day trip with a long commute) on the BP is strange.

I've seen some awfully cool things on the BP, and I find it hard to believe that anybody who's seen those things would think an afternoon is enough,

To the OP. Are you tenting, or are you using a camper or RV? I know of several campsites on the BP but don’t know if they can accommodate tents.

Thanks, Everyone. That's just what I wanted to know. I'm now planning 2 days at Terra Nova and 2 days on the Bonavista Peninsula. Janidd,We have a truck camper that can be fully self contained - although we prefer showers and bath houses. You mentioned several places to camp. Would you share?

Not sure some of these will have the facilities you need in a truck camper, but here’s a list for your consideration.

Princehaven in Princeton…..beautiful location in a village and near the water, but not as near to Bonavista.

Hillside Campsite overlooking Kings Cove

Lockston Provincial Park near Port Rexton

Paradise Farm RV park near Bonavista

Elliston Municipal Park …not sure if it was opened last year, but right across from Sandy Cove beach in Elliston

There’s also Cabot Highway RV park, but it’s not that far along the peninsula so not really near where you would like to be.

I have driven past most of these multiple times as we have a summer home near Bonavista.
