St.John to Deer Lake

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time in Newfoundland- and my fiance and I's first trip in 5 years! My finance and I will be going to NL from July 5 to July 16 (11 days). We have already booked are car and want to go from St.John to Deer Lake.

We LOVE hiking and the outdoors. My goal for this trip is to see whales, hike and kayak. I'd like to some adventure stuff too (zip line would be cool). If you have any suggestions for adventure outdoor stuff, that would be great! So I have a itinerary and I'm wondering if it looks OK. I'm worried about being too long in one place if there's not much to do. You'll see that I have 3 full days in Deer Lake and that's to hit up some hiking trails over there (I've heard it's great hiking).

If you could offer any suggestions, that would be great!!

Day 1- Arrive in St-John

Day 2- St-John

Day 3- Trinity Area

Day 4- Terra Nova National Park

Day 5- Twilingate

Day 6- Twilingate

Day 7-Gros Morne

Day 8- Gros Morne

Day 9- Gros Morne

Day 10- Return to St-John for flight (7 hours in a car)

Day 11- Wake up in St-John and take flight back to Toronto

What do you guys think??

I checked to fly out of Deer Lake but it was too expensive (500$ more) and we don't mind driving back to St-John.

Thanks guys,

Val

Personally, I would do two nights in Trinity and one in Twillingate, there is more to do in Trinity and the Bonavista Peninsula IMO.

""You'll see that I have 3 full days in Deer Lake"" Deer Lake is not mentioned in your actual itinerary, just Gros Morne. Gros Morne and Deer Lake are not the same, they are an hour or so apart.

hi

just a note: it is St John's with the 's

without the 's you might get Saint John in New Brunswick

Ya you're right. The plan is to visit Gros Morne for those days and possibly Deer Lake at some point during those 3 days. I didn't know they were an hour away from each other actually. Thanks for the info!

If you are from North Bay, then I'd recommend completely skipping Deer Lake (other than passing through). Deer Lake isn't bringing much to the table over and above what you see near home, and there are some spectacular sites to be seen in NFLD. I also wouldn't overnight in Terra Nova NP, for similar reasons.

I strongly recommend spending more than one night on the Bonavista Peninsula. Two nights Trinity area, then two nights Twillingate would work. While Twillingate is nice, I much prefer the Bonavista peninsula, so I'd even recommend a 3/1 split.

3 nights in Gros Morne sounds about right, given your time constraints. You can easily fill 3 days with great hikes (e.g. Gros Morne mountain, Green Gardens, top of the Tablelands).

You should get on the booking of accommodations soon (6 months ago would have been much better, but the sooner the better). Popular tourist accommodations in the hot spots (everywhere you're going) are often completely booked for hot dates at this point.

Your interests will determine recommendations, are you interested in historic sites or nature and hiking, puffins, icebergs. If you wish to see icebergs you need to come in May or June. With only 4 nights, fly into St. John’s to see the east coast. For the west coast, including Gros Morne, fly into Deer Lake.

Angela: Your question is only related to the OP's in that you're both talking about a trip to Newfoundland. It would be much better to start your own thread (by posting a question to the forum, not replying to an original post). Include your interests, and, very importantly, what time of year you're planning on going.
