looking for a place to stay near patchogue for 4 days in july - prefer near water , non chain place with some atmosphere and pool - preferably within 30 min - are there places on fire island near there? or near quogue maybe - any suggestions appreciated

There are a number of hotels and B&Bs listed on EastOfNYC.com - you might have some luck there. Try looking in Sayville for a place to stay. The town is a bit nicer and has more in terms of shopping. Patchogue has great restaurants, but looks a little run down. You can find maps of both Patchogue and Sayville on ShortListLI.com
