Rent skis at the ski mountain. It is pretty standard procedure. For cross country skiing, you can rent at some of the sporting goods and outfitter stores, and they can tell you places to ski, both groomed and ungroomed. But any XC Ski facility will also rent, which, again, is easier.

Depending on where you are staying in the Winni area, Gunstock Mtn in Gilford and King Pine in Milton(?) are both good places, especially if none of you have skied before. King Pine also has an awesome tubing hill that they groom. They provide the tubes and a tow rope to get you up the hill. For more advanced skiing, try Waterville Valley. There are plenty of others, too.
