Thankfully enough universities cancelled their spring breaks. Wish more would have. Schools have enough trouble without adding superspreader travel events. Hope this curfew helps the locals.

I know of many kids who are in Florida right now whose schools “canceled” spring break. Remote learning allows them to go wherever they want, take classes during the day, and party at night.

This is the unintended consequences of a Covid test requirement to return to the US from foreign destinations. Not sure why anyone would expect a different outcome.

Or it is either expected result of failure to encourage or require folks to wear masks. Tens of thousands of college kids go to Florida for spring break every year, them going there this year isn’t due to a lack of alternatives.

I think the kids are relying on the fact that they're personally at very little risk from virus. Hopefully they have the good sense to stay away from at-risk people in the near future and get tested a week or so after they get back.

I don’t think any number of regulations and mandates would have made the slightest difference to these spring breakers. The police had to use armored vehicles with a sound canon to get them off Ocean Drive this evening.

I think mandates and restrictions would have helped reduce crowds. People are flocking to your state because of the cheap flights but also because of the reputation that there are no covid rules. They might have picked another state if there were. It might have still been a losing battle because of the weather but if bars were closed, masks enforced, crowds restricted then it wouldn’t have been very appealing.

Being a state that relies heavily on hospitality, making things less appealing wouldn't seem to be the best idea. People tend to have pretty long memories when it comes to being made to feel unwelcome in such a place, at least the folks who spend a decent amount of money. The measured responses they're taking now should put a lid on the immediate problem without punishing everyone else.

As to no COVID rules, that may be the case from a government perspective, but it's not the reality. Masks are required by every business I've been into and people are for the most part social distancing. And, they're making their choices on what's right for them. We don't eat out nearly as much as we used. When we do we take a pass on restaurants we feel are too crowded. But, we're a little older. People in their 20's and 30's without risk factors look at things differently. Thankfully it's worked out well.

I don’t know why there is a perception that Florida has no covid restrictions (perhaps misreporting by the national media?). In the Miami area there have been restrictions continuously for the past year, some sensible, others comical. There is currently, and the last several months, a countywide midnight curfew, distancing requirements, mask rules and other usual ones. This is all even before the new 8 pm curfew announced yesterday for parts of south beach.

The problem is the Spring Break crowd is much more than normal (due perhaps to pent up demand, cheaper airbnb type rentals, cheaper flights etc.). It also appears to be not just college students, but others from neighboring states taking advantage of the opportunity to vacation after a year if being stuck. The sheer numbers and careless attitude (age group 20’s mostly) makes it nearly impossible to enforce distancing/making rules).

There might be restrictions but no legal enforcement for families visiting. I can imagine that’s frustrating to businesses trying to protect their employees when you get entitled visitors who say “what are you going to do about it.” If there are no fines or consequences then it’s hard to get certain people to comply.
