Is 2nd week of May a good time to visit Mt Shasta area and Lassen Volcano National Park? Are the roads and most of the park still closed then? We felt it may get too hot and humid in June. Appreciate any inputs. Thx.

It is a little early. Lassen has an elevation range from 6000' to 10000'. In May the average temperatures: Day time high 70'F, night time low 29'F. (June - 34'F to 79'F).

Thanks.. we will be staying at Redding and driving daily to these places. Would it still be un-advisable for early May visit?

Generally, the concern is with road access in early season. But this year we have very little rain (snow). So road access is most likely okay. The other concern is with snow cover on trails that you may want to hike on. Depending on what you want to do at Lessen. Some trails may still be covered with snow. Research and plan, if hiking is your aim, which trail(s) you want to walk. Then check on their website or call and talk to the rangers there about conditions on specific trail perhaps a few days before your arrival.

Perhaps speaking too soon. Tonight (April 13, 2021) we are having some light snow in the Tahoe area.

It is a bit unusual but not unheard of. A season went by relatively dry but we can have some late snows. Check weather forecast and road conditions closely when you get closer to your trip.

It's never been hot and humid in June since I've been here (we moved here in 1990). Cold and rainy, yes. Hot and humid, no. It rarely ever gets humid here even in August. The mountain air is dry.

The Lassen road (hwy 89) is open to the Devastated Area on the north side, but still closed at the visitor center on the south side. Visitors are allowed to walk and bike on the plowed sections even though it may be closed to vehicles. It may very well be open in a few weeks.

Hiking trails may still be snow covered. Bumpass Hell usually remains closed until the ground is dry.
