Driving between Asahikawa & Furano/Biei during Obon 2018

Hi TA friends,

I just found out that my next trip to Furano is right smack during the Obon week. As i will be travelling with my parents (~70yrs) & family, i am wondering if i shd be renting a car right from CTS (we will land in CTS) or to take the train from CTS to Asahikawa & travel in the city & Zoo (on public transport) & only pick up a car for the trips thereafter ?

Places to visit : Sunflowers fields (Himawari no Sato) Furano flowers fields & surrounding area & Biei (probably to be covered over 2days or more) & Blue pool etc

Question: Owing to the timing of this visit, i found that the accommodation is quite expensive (compared to what we initially thought) would it be ok (traffic wise) if we be base out of Asahikawa instead of staying in Furano or Biei?

For this trip, we will have 2 more days (extra) after Asahikawa/Furano/Biei.. where else shd i go ? of course, going into Sapporo is an option but maybe you guys have better experiences where to go for summer to share with me

I suggest picking up the car right when you leave CTS and head straight to Biei/Furano. Traffic could be heaviest within the Biei/Furano area so where you start (Asahikawa or Chitose) is actually not that important. You will just have to be patient.

Book whatever hotels you can now but keep checking. Most places don't let you book until 3-6 months before your travel date.

If you arrive at CTS after overnight flight, you shouldn't drive from CTS.(In the case you should take public transport on the first day and pick the car on the next day).

Outside winter months driving is the best way to explore the vast area around Furano and Biei. How many days to spend there depends on individual preference. We drove around for 3 days and visited many flower sites, myself totally “flowered-out” but my wife said she wish she could stay longer !

We stayed 1 night each in Asahikawa, Biei and Furano. Using Asahikawa as a base is feasible if you don’t mind driving back and forth each day. We were there late July to early August and traffic was not that bad.

Summer is also a suitable time to venture east to Akan National Park, Kushiro Shitsugen National Park and the Shiretoko Peninsula, but with only 2 days it may not be a good idea due to distance and the long travelling time to and from CTS. Sapporo and Otaru would be the obvious choice if you haven’t been there before. For coastal scenery the Shakotan Peninsula is worth considering especially if you are driving.

Thanks Sammy, that was what i had done, booked a cancellation accommodation first at Asahikawa for the whole period.. will continue to monitor the websites for any opening nearer to March

Thanks for your thoughts, Iroeman & William, i am definitely going to be driving as my parents didnt take to travelling on public transport very well (when we visited Kyoto/Osaka last year for Sakura)

Hopefully, they wont be "flowered out" by the end of the week that we are there.. is there any other places nearby Asahikawa that i should consider (since i have the car) for summer?

I have been to Sapporo & Otaru but not my parents tho.

Not exactly near Asahikawa but if you like flowers the Rose Garden in Iwamizawa Park is also worth going especially during August.

Or go further south to Yubari to try out its famous melon.

South of Furano is Hoshino Resort Tomamu where you can go for the spectacular Unkai Terrace and the beautiful Water Chapel.

BTW, while in Asahikawa don’t miss its ramen which we consider to be the best in the whole of Japan. You can try out different tastes in the Ramen Village.
