Tsodillo Hills

Hi all, I searched in this forum but came up with zip on Tsodillo hills. Has anyone here been there? Any public buses - combis, matatus to/from Maun? There seems to be a campground but not sure if it private or the park's. I can rent a car if needed but would rather not. Tours would be fine if you know of any. Any and all info much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Haven't been there YET, but it's on our itinerary for September, and I did a fair bit of research into how to make it happen. We will stay at Xaro lodge and they offer a package which includes a one day trip to Tsodilo. We will be self driving there, at the time of booking the only other option was to charter a plane at around $5,000US

It's a bit far to do as a self drive day trip from Maun, but there is the option to camp there (very basic facilities I understand) or to stay at Drotsky's cabins. The other accomodation possibility is a place called Swamp Stop. The road towards Shakawe is reputedly quite rough with plenty of potholes but should be achievable in a 2 wheel drive.

The third option I came up with is that Helicopter Horizons does a one day helicopter trip from Maun - pretty expensive way to do but you would also get a wonderful scenic trip along the eastern delta.

I don't think you will get there via public transport.

public transport (minivan / combi) usually only exist at places where there are towns / villages along the way eg A35 https://www.facebook.com/Okavango247/posts/maun-shakawe-new-public-transport-fares/3423195897724177/

so i think your nearest point is shakawe . stay at a place like drotsky. https://drotskys.com/ from there on, you either find another traveler to share the private driver fee for day trip, or you offer to pay gas to another group of self drivers, or you hitchhike to tsodilo hills

It’s on our itinerary for May. We’re taking a helicopter from the delta, quite expensive but it’s a long drive otherwise. Love to hear anyone else’s experience, I’m massively looking forward to it.

Thanks all for the feedback/thoughts. I agree it is too far for day trip.

Drotsky's looks lovely! mrc, good advice. Either that or rent a car from Maun, stay for a night or two (I'm carting all my camping gear for this 3 months) and return to Maun to return the car or keep it to drive to Ghanzi.

I doubt I'll take a helicopter ride but, Mary, maybe we run into each other in Maun. :)
