Johannesburg to Maun

Hello,

We are looking to visit Maun for a safari in December. We are flying from Tampa. The flights we are finding fly through Johannesburg or CapeTown; however, the transfer time between the airport and flight to Maun is about 1:50. This doesn’t seem like long enough to go through customs, recheck bags, etc. Does anyone have experience with booking separate flights? For example, Tampa to Johannesburg round trip 12/7 - 17), then Johannesburg to Maun round trip 12/9 - 15).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I dont have any knowledge of Capetown turnaround but have experienced Jo'burg O R Tambo airport many times with similar timeframes but have never had to go through customs or collect luggage etc regardless of the different airlines. The transit pathway runs smoothly and my husband got thru with just 20mins due to a late arrival on one occasion

If you are on a single ticket I think you can transfer airside and 1 hr 50 should be okay if that is the case--plus it will be the airline's obligation to get you on the next flight --with availability. On separate tickets you'd have to go through Immigration, collect your bag (if any) and check in again, so I'd want at least 3 hours and be happier with 4. But I'm very risk-averse! Have you considered building in a buffer night at JNB?

many book separate flights but separate flights with 2h transfer time is something I would only do if protected

otherwise 4h is my benchmark for JNB/CPT. 3h works when everything runs like clockwork

you should also ask yourself if you are fine being put on the next day's flight even if protected. esp if you are paying $$$ for the first night stay in botswana.

Worth asking your TA about VIP meet & greet at Jo’burg - we used Menzies on our June trip & they met us at the air bridge from our incoming BA flight & took us through security/passport control/baggage collection/check-in/security/passport control & to our Airlink Maun flight gate in around 50 mins.

Not sure what the cost was at it was bundled into our full trip but I’d have thought cheaper then an overnight stop & they added it to our return trip without asking us for anything additional.

City Lodge ( $$) or the Intercontinental ( $$$$) are both easily accessed with out taking a shuttle....Intercontinental is out the door and across the street....City Lodge is inside of the parking garage..... near car rental....we stayed there in February..... no complaints with a nice buffet breakfast,

outside dining area, restaurant and pool...🐃🐵🐗🐘

My husband and I plus two adult grandkids booked into Johannesburg one day and flew to Maun the next. At that time we needed a PCR test to get into Botswana so tested the day of arrival at the airport, got results by email overnight and flew to Maun next day. Worked out well. We stayed at Safari Club in Joburgh. Great place: they provide pick up and transport to airport, comes with dinner and bfast and lovely cottage like rooms in nice setting. Close to airport but landscaping makes it feel you are really in Africa. In fact with all our travels back and forth over 3 weeks we ended up there’s total of 3 nights. Oh yes…great hosts there too. Our grandaughter got sick and they somehow managed to get her an appt at a medical clinic, took us back and forth and we even made our evening flight home.

We were there in July 2021. Unbeknownst to us we flew in right as all the riots started, so we were their only guests. As such, our 2 rooms were right up the hall from their library/sitting room. Everything else was closed off. I’m sure they are much busier now but if the owner is onsite, tell Alistair that Carol and gang from the USA (booked there by Verity in Capetown) say hi and remember him and his wife fondly.
