Questions for 5nts in feb

Hi folks

Looking for some advice

Were thinking of coming to manila next month for 5nts with 2 kids age 2+5 after a week in hong kong.

1. Which mall has the best shopping for local clothing (no designer) - i got loads of tops and smart trousers in kuala lumpur last year for under $10 each and hoping for similar shopping. Or am i better off shopping in hong kong?

2. What hotel would you suggest staying that has a pool in makati?

Would be great if it was walking distance to local supermarket and any halal eateries.

Is makati the best place for us? We like cheap malls and eating out and prefer to walk over taking taxis

3.are there night markets in manila with fake designer clothes bags shoes etc like thailand?

4. Can you get cheap massages like in bali/thailand?

5. Ocean park, dreamplay, art in island, mind museum, mall of asia, rizal park,

Anythung else you'd recommend for a 2+4yr old? They might be abit too young for kidzania

Thanks in advance

No idea on prices in HK but Im guessing its cheaper there. Landmark Mall in makati is worth a look.

Budget in local currency otherwise impossible to answer

This may help. Divisoria is the place where many locals go to purchase clothes, bring them back to their island and sell them, but be aware of pick-pockets. Baclaran Market would be another place

Greenhills is a slighly more expensive but more safer version of Divisoria and Baclaran.

Yes - Makati is the place that you are looking for. Stay in close 5 minutes vicinity of greenbelt - it has early 50 restaurants to choose from. Manila has less of local brands of clothing (many designer brands usually made abroad, most of it comes from China and a lot comes in the form of international aid that is resold here in ukay ukay shops) and the only local stuff is high priced handicrafts.

We don't have night markets like in Thailand. But yes, there are a few massage parlours - there is a real nice one at greenbelt - right between starbucks and rustans supermarket.

1. Which mall has the best shopping for local clothing?

- As mentioned above, Landmark would be a good bet. That's within Makati. There's multi-mall complex in the CBD with four distinct and interconnected malls, and Landmark is one of them. Greenhills would be another great place for cheap finds similar to the night markets in Thailand, though they're open during the day. I highly discourage you from going to Divisoria or Baclaran. While some of the cheapest buys are there, it can get really chaotic that even locals tend to avoid it. If memory serves, tuff sold in Landmark and Greenhills are still generally cheaper than HK.

2. What hotel would you suggest staying that has a pool in makati?

- It really depends on your budget. Hotels in the CBD that are a short walk to the multi-mall complex I mentioned are the international chains like Shangri-La, Fairmont, Raffles, etc. If budget allows, these would be great choices. Makati CBD is great for walking with the abundance of streetside shops, parks, and overpass and underpass network.

3. Are there night markets in manila with fake designer clothes bags shoes etc like thailand?

- There aren't any big night markets in Manila similar to those in neighboring countries; most night markets here sell mostly food. But as mentioned above, the closest would be Greenhills.

4. Can you get cheap massages like in bali/thailand?

- There are places in Makati that offer an hour-long session for maybe $10.

5. Ocean park, dreamplay, art in island, mind museum, mall of asia, rizal park. Anything else you'd recommend for a 2+4yr old? They might be abit too young for kidzania

- You can check out the Museo Pambata (Children's Museum) that's near Manila Ocean Park.

Have fun!

...as far as kids are concerned...every mall has a substantial kids area..arcade or otherwise..usually many choices for all ages...as far as local ly made clothes, those are harder to come by these days...i find many in the provinces..and again at the malls, local brands will have local clothes...you may have better luck with shoes etc.

Excellent. Both Shangri la and Ascott are close to the malls in and around Greenbelt. Have a nice trip.

By the way, there is a large Filipino handicrafts shop (a) in the large department store to the north of Greenbelt (the one with the larger Rustans) and (b) on the eastern side (along the road) of Greenbelt. You might get some of the things you are looking for there. Rustans and Greenbelt also have a number of designer clothing outlets

I would choose Shangrila over Ascott as its a much better hotel if price is equal. The Shang is much more posh with an extravagant foyer and out of this world breakfasts. Breakfast at Ascott is poor.

Also look at The Fairmont which is another super hotel and on Combined Hotels a little bit cheaper than The Shang.
