Furano - better skip it in winter months, farms and spots are covered in deep snow.

ASahidake - unless you come here for skiing or onsen, there's nothing else for sightseeing in deep winter except Asahidake. But it takes 2 hours by bus from Asahikawa, roughly 4 hours from Sapporo.

are you visiting in early Feb for the snow festival in SApporo ?

If you only use JR Hokkaido, the Pass to consider would be the JR Hokkaido Pass, as follows, rather than the Nationwide JR Pass.

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_01.html

But, please check if you can find good trains to take from Sapporo to each of your destination by using HyperDia, as follows.

http://www.hyperdia.com/

I don't recommend to drive on the roads with snow/ice in winter there, but public transportations (trains and busses) are not well-developed in Hokkaido, because only @4%(@5 million) of the whole Japanese are living in Hokkaido with @40% (2 million) of them living in Sapporo, even it represents @22% of lands(areas). In addition, people in Hokkaido do not move much, except to Ski Resorts, in winter. Thus, you should check the timetables of JR Hokkaido from Sapporo to your destination in advance, and also consider taking busses instead. I think it's good to visit places popular to people in Sapporo, such as Jozankei Onsen, probably by bus. If you take many busses, you might not need the JR Pass.

If you come in February, you should see the Sapporo Snow Festival on Feb. 4-11, 2019, as follows.

Do you have plan of skiing or just experience snow festival? Some suggestions:

If snow festival- you may just stay at Sapporo ( Odori Park & Susukino)

Skiing- Niseko is recommendable

You can also visit Takino Suzuran Park,Shiroi Koibito/ Chocolate factory . And also nearby Otaru

www.hokkaidox.com/en/hokkaido-bus-pass/

I suggest you have to plan your itinerary first before you can decide if its worth it to get JR pass.

Have read some links , might help you.

Hi

You can use this website to check the routes, travel times and price of JR trains.

http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

Also - remember that the JR Pass comes in different forms - a whole Japan pass, a pass that will cover from Tokyo up to Sapporo and everywhere between. And JR Hokkaido also has Hokkaido only passes.

So first plan your routes, check the Hypedia link to check costs - and then look at the rail passes.

If you are coming from Tokyo by train you should use a pass.

If you are doing mahy trips in Hokkaido ^- Kushiro - Shari - Abashiri - Sounkyo - Asahikawa etc - then the pass is good.

If you are just doing Sapporo area - with short trips to Otaru / Jozankei and maybe Noboribetsu - then you don't need a JR Pass.

One question, where can we buy winter cloths like snow boots, snow jackets, snow paint?

Is it cheaper to buy from Sapporo,as we are planning on Jan-Feb with kids.

There are many shops inside the JR Sapporo Station Building before you go outside, so if you buy your clothes after you come to Hokkaido, I recommend to go to Sapporo at first.
