Hoi An Tailor recommendation

I was hoping to have a tuxedo made during a 3 night stay in Hoi An this next winter. Is this a reasonable expectation and is the quality satisfactory - any particular tailors to recommend?

Warning: Don't buy from "Impressions Boutique". Prices are much (3x or 4x) higher than overall level and they tell you it's about quality of work and fabrics. This is a damn lie. Their work quality is so-so and one pair of trousers was made of fabric with so poor quality thad it broke down totally with first use. Their talks are very impressive but don't believe it!

Now my suits are breaking down after maybe 10 hours of use.

The hotel we stayed in recommended Tan Toan Tailors in 18A Hai Ba Trung Street Hoi An ( email tantoanclothshop@yahoo.com). My husband got 1 jacket (fine light wool), 2 trousers , 1 silk shirt (japanese silk) and 2 cotton shirts made. I got a long Kimono made (lined) from expensive silk. We are both rather large and a lot of material went into a making of the clothes. All of it was under US$ 250.00, from measuring to final fitting only 36 hrs. past. The cloth are very well made, the staff is very friendly and professional, they have impaccible taste and their advise in colour, style and cut was extremely competent. We found the tailor shops where nobody try to drag you into their shop are the ones who can rely on their quality rather than their verbal power. It might be a good idea to take your favourite pattern, picture or drawing with you, they take only one look and make it identical to what you brought with you.

We have just returned back from VN and I had a dinner suit (tuxedo) made by A Dong Silk 40 Le Loi St (near Good Morning Vietnam) US$90. Remenber to say that you are from a cold climate to get a thicker cloth and lined. Haven't worn it yet but it seems to be of very good quality.

Have a great time

I was in Hoi An two weeks ago and agree that Yaly is the best tailor in town. Someone in Saigon recommnded them as they have the largest selection of fabrics, and you don't have to pay a penny upfront; you only pay if you're happy. I had 4 silk suits and two pairs of shoes made in under 24 hours for US$204 and they are all perfect....will go there again any chance I get.

My daughter and I have just come back from our second holiday in Hoi an. Both times we had clothes made at A Dong Silk 60 Le Loi Street, and were extremely pleased with both the quality & the service. They make beautifully tailored clothes, hardly any alterations needed. Garments are fully lined and finished off in a very professional way. The girls recommend different types of fabrics for what you require and the range is huge. They went out of their way to help and even delivered to our hotel. This time I had my son and a few friends holidaying with us and they were all very impressed with what they had made.

Clothes that we bought last year are still looking brand new after a lot of wear. Shirts I had made for my son are also still great after many many washes.

We also had clothes made at Yaly. Clothes here were good as well . They are probably better for evening or something a bit unusual as they have a flair for getting the cut right on silky light material. A lot of the designs are on show in their shops and they will make these to fit. But they take two or even three fittings to get garments fitting properly.

A Dong Silk is our favourite and hope to return sometime soon

Hi

We found our tailor from "Rough Guide", and we were very happy about it. It might be one of those "cheaper places", but very professional and service minded.

Name's Bibi Silk, 13 Phan Chu Trinh.

It 's run by an expath/Vietnamese couple.

Spend allmost 400$. Don't regret it.

Hi!

I highly recommend Yaly for clothes you will wear often, like a basic suit. Other things like dresses or skirts I had made at the market, shop 41. I was very happy with what they did there, had a wonderful coat made there. These stores are way cheaper.

Good advice. Places that don''t ask for a deposit are usually the best, because they know what they deliver is good. Of course, a lot of the cheaper stores need your money to invest in the fabrics.

I had a lot of stuff made in 6 different shops and I was so happy with all of it. Just make sure you have enough room in your bag, or ship things back home (which is $7 a kilo by plane).

Good luck!
