U.S. adds Albania to “Do Not Travel” list

I’m a U.S. citizen scheduled to travel to Albania in late May for a week and a half. However, I just saw that the U.S. State Department has elevated its travel advisory for Albania to level 4 (the highest level, which means “Do Not Travel”). For further context, the U.S. now has most countries at level 4. At this point, I’m trying to determine how to proceed — whether to cancel now, still plan to go, change my destination, etc. I’m vaccinated, plan to visit mostly rural areas in Albania and will maintain social distance/mask-wearing. I welcome any feedback, advice or recommendations on what to do. Thank you in advance.

It is a bit surprising since situation in Albania is improving with few daily cases and deaths. In fact pandemic situation in Albania has never been as bad as US or many other countries. Perhaps US is classifying countries based on vaccination rates. US is among countries with the highest vaccination rates, and Albania is lagging behind, with only about 12% of population having received at least one dose.

What exactly does this imply? Does it mean your travel insurance isn’t valid or are you afraid of high infection risk? Albania has low infection rates so you should be fine wherever you go 🤷🏽‍♀️

Do you know if all the restaurants and musuems are open? We are also going in June.

Does anyone know if you can go to other Europeon countries from Albania if you are US citizen?

Most if not all European countries require a quarantine of a certain period for everyone travelling from Albania, at the moment. Albania has enough to offer for 2-3 weeks though.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. My initial concern was traveling when the State Dept. advises against it. However, I’ve been doing my due diligence and feel better about going.

@CarieRudy — Everything seems to be open based on my research.

Jim D lol what? North Macedonia and Albania are the only two opened and they’re in no way the most expensive? They’re almost the cheapest.
