We just finished a two day tour of the southern Paraguay Missions which started in Asuncion and ended in Encarnacion. En route we visited the Fransiscan church in Yaguaron, two Jesuit museums in San Ignacio and Santa Maria de Fe as well as the Trinidad and Jesus Jesuit Reduccions. Our guide, Jose Acosta Perez, is knowledgeable and passionate about this topic and as a result of this tour we feel we have a good understanding of the history, purpose, architecture and art of the missions. As there are no explations in English, two of the attractions were not open until Jose contacted the gatekeepers, and the fact that they are somewhat remotely located, it would be difficult to do this visit without a guide and certainly not within 2 days. In addition to his knowledge of the missions, Jose talked about the country, history, towns we were passing, the economy and the wildlife we saw. He also does tours of the Chaco. He has a great sense of humour and is enthusiastic.
