Tourists arrivals in Lebanon in 2015

The number of incoming tourists to Lebanon totaled 175,859 in the first two months of 2015, constituting an increase of 20.5% from 145,891 tourists in the same period of 2014, a rise of 4.4% from 168,471 tourists in the first two months of 2013 and a drop of 9,1% from 193,383 tourists in the same period of 2012.

Arab tourists accounted for 37.5% of total visitors in the first two months of 2015, followed by visitors from European countries with 31.4%, the Americas with 13.8%, Asia with 9.4%, Africa with 5.2% and Oceania with 2.6%. Also, tourists from Iraq accounted for 14.8% of total visitors in the first two months of 2015, followed by visitors from France with 8.4%, the United States with 6.8%, Egypt with 6%, Jordan with 5.2% Canada with 4.7% and Saudi Arabia with 4.5%.

The number of visitors from Arab countries increased by 285 in the first two months of 2015, followed by visitors from Africa (+20.5%), Asia (+17%), Europe (+16.7%), Oceania (+16%),and the Americas (+14.4%).

In parallel, the number of tourists from the United Arab Emirates surged by 104.5% year-on-year in the first two months of 2015, followed by visitors from Saudi Arabia with a 104.3% rise, Kuwait (+64.6%), Turkey (+52.6%), Brazil (+31.6%), Iraq (+26.6%), Egypt (+17.2%), Canada (+16.8%), England (+16.2%). France (+16.1%), Sweden (+13.6%), the United States (+13.2%), Italy (+8.7%) and Germany (+7.5%).

In contrast, the number of visitors from Venezuela declined by 17% annually, while visitors from Jordan decreased by 1% year-on-year in the first two months of 2015.

The number of incoming tourists to Lebanon totaled 282,256 in the first quarter of 2015 constituting an increase of 23.1% from 229,252 tourists in the same quarter of 2014, a rise of 2.8% from 274,663 tourists in the first quarter of 2013 and a drop of 10.1% from 313,854 tourists in the same quarter of 2012.

Arab tourists accounted for 36.25 of total visitors in the first quarter of 2015 followed by visitors from European countries with 31.6%, the Americas with 14.1%, Asia with 9.6%, Africa with 5.4%, and Oceania with 3%.

Also tourists from Iraq accounted for 14% of total visitors in the first quarter of 2015, followed by visitors from France with 8.1%, the United States with 7.1%, Egypt with 5.9%, Jordan with 5.3%, Canada with 4.9% and Saudi Arabia in 4.6%.

The number of visitors from Oceanian countries increased by 38.7% in the first quarter of 2015, followed by visitors from Africa (+35.5%), the Arab region (+28.2%), the Americas (+20.6%), Europe (+19%), and Asia (+13.1%).

In parallel the number of tourists from Saudi Arabia surged by 104.5% year on year in the first quarter of 2015, followed by visitors from the United Arab Emirates with 86.15%, Kuwait (+52.1%), Turkey (+50.9%), Germany (+27.4%), Iraq (+24.4%), Brazil (+23.2%), the United States and Canada (+22.4% each), England (+21.7%), Egypt (16.4%), Sweden (+15.3%), France (+13.5%), Italy (+8%) and Jordan (+6.6%).

In contrast, the number of visitors from Venezuela declined by 15.4% annually in the first quarter of 2015.

The number of incoming tourists to Lebanon totaled 524,334 in the first five months of 2015, constituting an increase of 18,3% from 443,071 tourists in the same period of 2014, a rise of 7,5% from 487,608 tourists in the same period of 2012.

Arab tourists accounted for 34,2% of total visitors in the first five months of 2015, followed by visitors from European countries with 32,3%, the Americas with 15,4%, Asia with 9.3%, Africa with 5.4% and Oceania with 3.5%.

Also, tourists from Iraq accounted for 12.9% of total visitors in the first five months of 2015 , followed by visitors from France with 8.6%, the United States with 7.8%, Egypt with 5,6%, Jordan with 5.5%, Canada with 5.4% and Germany with 4.2%.

Occupancy rate at Beirut hotels at 56%, room yields up 17% in the first half of 2015:

EY"s benchmark survey of the hotel sector in the Middle East indicated that the average occupancy rate at hotels in beirut was 56% in the first half of 2015, up from 50% in the same period of 201 and compared to an average rate of 64.1% in 12 Arab markets included in the survey.

The occupancy rate at Beirut hotels was the sixth lowest in the region in the covered period, while it was the second lowest, along with Manama in the first half of 2014. Manama posted the second occupancy rate of 47% in the first half of 2015, followed by Cairo (48%), Makkah (52%), Amman (54%) and Kuwait City (55%). Also, the occupancy rate at hotels in Beirut rose by six percentage points, year on year constituting the second highest increase among the 12 Arab markets, behind only Cairo (+16%) and relative to an average drop to 0.6 percentage points for the region. Occupancy rates at Beirut hotels were 50% in January, 55% in February, 54% in March, 56% in April, 61% in May, and 57% in June compared to 36% in January, 41% in Febryary, 40% in March, 51% in April, 61% in May, and 68% in June,2014.

The average rate per room at Beirut hotels was USD 175 in the first half of 2015, ranking the capital's hotels as the fourth least expensive in the region, relative to Amman USD 155, Makkah USD 136, and Cairo USD 104. The average rate per room at Beirut hotels rose by 4.6% year on year and posted the fifth highest growth rate among the markets in the region, as it underperformed only Makkah (+49.9%), Cairo (+30.5%), Madina (+21.6%), and Doha (+6.3%). The average rate per room in beirut came below the regional average of USD 203.8 which rose by 2.6% from the same period of 2014.

Further, revenues per available room were USD 99 in Beirut in the first half of 2015, up from USD 84 in the same period of 2014, and came in eight place in the region, higher than Manama USD 94, Amman USD 85, Makkah USD 71, and Cairo USD 51. Beirut's revenue per available room surged by 17.1% year on year and posted the fourth highest increase among Arab markets, relative to a growth rate of 95% in Cairo, 24.3% in Makkah, and 21.7% in Madina. Beirut posted revenue per available room of USD 92 in January, USD 93 in February, USD 91 in March, USD 99 in April, USD 111 in May and USD 104 in June 2015 compared to USD 64 in January, USD 68 in February, USD 57 in March, USD 88 in April, USD 103 in May and USD 125 in June 2014. Further, Kuwait posted the highest average rate per room in the region at USD 273 , while Dubai posted the highest occupancy rate at 83% and the highest room yield at USD 226 in the first half of 2015.

Airport passengers up by 6.5% in first half of 2015

Figures released by the Hariri International Airport (HIA) show that the number of airport passengers (arrivals, departures, transit) totalled 3,111,952 in the first half of 2015, constituting a rise of 6.5% from the same period last year. the total number of arriving passengers rose by 7% year on year to 1,548, 109 in the first half of 2015, compared to increases of 1.3% in the same period of 2014 and of 2.3% in the first half of 2013. Also, the number of departing passengers rose by 6.2% year on year to 1,556,776 in the first half of 2015, relative to a decline of 4.7% in the same period of 2014 and an increase of 15.4% in the first half of 2013. In parallel, the airport aircraft activity rose by 3.9% year on year to 30,836 takeoffs and landings in the first half of 2015 compared to decreases of 0.3% in the first half of last year and 2.7% in the same period of 2014. The HIA processed 45,686 metric tons of cargo in the first half of 2015 that consisted of 45,439 of

tons freight and 247 tons of mail. in parallel, Middle East Airlines had 11,145 flights in the first half of 2015 accounting for 36.1% of total aircraft movement at the HIA. It was distantly followed by Egyptian Airlines with 1,258 flights or 4.2% of the total, Qatar Airways with 1,202 (3.9%), Turkish Airlines with 1,168 flights (3.8%), Fly Dubai with 1,082 flights (3.5%), and Iraqi Airways with 1,063 flights (3.4%). In addition, the United Arab Emirates were the main source of flights to Lebanon and the primary aircraft destination from the HIA in the first half of 2015.

The number of incoming tourists to Lebanon totaled 880,079 in the first seven months of 2015, constituting an increase of 17.9% from 746,456 tourists in the same period of 2014 and a drop of 33.6% from 1.3 million tourists in the same period of 2010. Visitors from Europe accounted for 33.6% of total visitors in the first seven months of 2015, followed from visitors from Arab countries with 30.8% , the Americas with 18.3% , Asia with 8.4%, Africa with 5.2%, and Oceania with 3.7%.

Also, tourists from Iraq accounted for 11.5% of total visitors in the first seven months of 2015, followed by visitors from United States with 9.4%, France with 8.9%, Canada with 6.4%, Jordan with 5.1% and Egypt and Germany with 4.9% each.

In parallel, the number of tourists from African countries increased by 45.8% in the first half of 2015 followed by visitors from the Americas (+21%), Oceania (+20.8%) and Europe, Asia and the Arab region (+15.5% each).

The number of tourists from Turkey surged by 40.6% year-on-year in the first seven months of 2015, followed by visitors from the United Arab Emirates with a 35.7% rise, Saudi Arabia (+22.2%), the United States and Canada (+21.2% each), Brazil (+21%), Kuwait (+20.4%), England (+16.6%), Egypt (+16.4%), Germany (+16.1%), Iraq (+14.2%), France (+13.3%), Sweden (+11.5%), Jordan (+10.2%), Italy (+ 6.7%), and Venezuela (+ 6.4%).

EY's benchmark survey of the hotel sector in the Middle East indicated that the average occupancy rate at hotels in beirut was 56% in the first seven months of 2015, up from 47% in the same period of 2014 and compared to an average rate of 62.5% in the 12 Arab markets included in the survey.

The occupancy rate at beirut hotels was the sixth lowest in the first seven months of 2014.

Manama posted the lowest occupancy rate of 465 in the first seven months of 2015, followed by Cairo (47%), Kuwait City (51%), and Makkah and Amman (53% each). Also, the average occupancy rate at hotels in Beirut rose by nine percentage points year-on-year, constituting the second highest increase among the 12 Arab markets, behind only Cairo (+16%), and relative to an average rise of of 0.8 percentage points for the region.

Occupancy rates at beirut hotels were 50% in January, 55% in February, 54% in March, 56% in April, 61% in May, 57% in June and 56% in July 2015, compared to 36% in January, 41% in February, 40% in March, 51% in April, 61% in May, 68% in June and 35% in July 2014.

The average rate per room at Beirut hotels was USD 179 in the first seven months of 2015, ranking the capital's hotels as the thirds least expensive in the region, relative to Amman (USD 155) and Cairo (USD 108). The average rate per room at Beirut's hotels rose by 5.4% year-on-year and posted, along with Jeddah, the fifth highest growth rate among all markets in the region, as it underperformed only Cairo (+32.3%), Makkah (+27.9%), Madina (+21.5%), and Doha (+6.8%). The average rate per room in Beirut came below the regional average of USD 213, which rose by 3.4% from the same period of 2014.

Further, revenues per available room were USD 101 in beirut in the first seven months of 2015, up from USD 81 in the same period of 2014, and came in ninth place in the region, higher than Manama (USD 9()), Amman (USD 83), and Cairo (USD 51). Beirut's revenue per available room surged by 23.7% year-on-year and posted the second highest increase among Arab markets, relative to a growth rate of 101.6% in Cairo. Further, Jeddah posted the highest average rate per room in the region at USD 279 and the highest room per yield at USD 215, while Dubai posted the highest occupancy rate at 79% in the first seven months of 2015.
