Planning on visiting Tuol Sleng (S21) avoid the audio guide

Please don't waste your $6 on the audio guide, instead pay $3 to enter, then find the tour guides that work within the grounds (they will be wearing grey shirts/blouses) & then tip them after your have finished your tour, the main reason, is because they will know more about Tuol Sleng than the audio guide.

I was lucky to have a tour guide (she & her family experienced the horrors under the Khmer Rouge) her information she told me invaluable, I saw a lot of experienced tour guides sat around the grounds, and when I asked her why, she said that the audio guides have made them (tour guides) virtually redundant.

I'm not promoting the tour guides, but there is a huge picture on your left when you enter Tuol Sleng, and on that picture is a boy, well that boy actually works at Tuol Sleng, I bet that the audio guides don't tell you this, now you can decide if you still want to get an audio guide or actually tour guide.

Sounds fishy. Why would they work for nothing but tips? You left something out...

I got the audio and it wasn't really necessary, but kind of helped chill me out and take my time their. No regrets.

plenty of Khmers 'work for tips" ... sad, and to the western tourist an unacceptable thing - but that is how it is for many.

Its not the only place this happens - tour guides doing those 'free walking tours' in so many European cities are in exactly the same basket.

Nothing sounds fishy at all, I didn't ask them about their wages, I'm guessing they do get paid, and with tips they receive boosts their wage, my point was, that because the director of Tuol Sleng has introduced audio guides, they (tour guides) are virtually being made redundant, and their knowledge and information gets wasted.

My second time here and decided to try the audio guide. It wasn't a waste of time in my opinion.

Fortunately we visited before this tragic place became commercialised and were just about the only people there. No guides or audio machines. It was a very daunting and emotional experience which affected us deeply. Although we can never go back to those times of simplicity, I still think a visit to this area is worthwhile and valuable so that there is more and a deeper understanding of the horrors the Khmer people suffered within what is living memory.

Absolutely agree with you Travelkat.

We were there recently, profoundly affected by both the Killing Fields and S21. Used the audio at the Killing Fields, didn't at S21, it was harrowing enough without it.

You could give the tour guide the same price you would pay for the audio tour but I think I tipped my guide $10 because she was excellent, she never rushed and answered all my questions I asked.

The audio guide was OK to me. I think you can also get a lot of information about these places on the internet

But you won’t get the same information from the tour guides who actually witnessed the horrors involved with year zero

Quick question, when you entered rooms on the bottom level, the rooms where the torture took place, did you ever look up at the ceiling ? As if you did you would have seen faint blood stains, not a pleasant thing to see but I doubt the audio guide would tell you to look up at the ceiling.
