Mauritius Met have issued synopsis of May 2020 weather:

May is usually transition month towards winter for Mauritius. However, this year winter onset was slightly early and wintry conditions already prevailed at the very beginning of May.The strongest anticyclone reached 1040hPa causing the highest gust to reach 80km/hat Champ de Mars. Nevertheless, occasional warm spell, particularly during the day was felt. Dry conditions prevailed during the month with less than 50% of normal rainfall recorded.

During the 1st week, the nights were relatively cold and day time remained slightly warm. However, even the nights warmed upafterwardsand mainly fair weather was experienced after 03. The 3rd week had a strong anticyclone of 1040hPa which resulted in cold air advection causing a drop in temperature over the whole island. The last week had mainly fair days again which explains the rise in temperature particularly during the day. Daytime temperatures wereparticularly cooler than normal during the period 11-12 and 18-25 The maximum temperature dropped by about 1.5 to 3oC and locally by4oC at Port-Louis and Moka on 24.

The weather is running true to form for July with a high wave warning currently in force:

Special weather communique for Mauritius and Rodrigues issued at 10h00 this Thursday 09 July 2020.

The high wave wave warning remains in force in Rodrigues and Mauritius.

Trains of heavy south-westerly swells of the order of 4.5 meters will influence the open seas in the region of Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The southwesterly swells will be more energetic as from this evening and will be of the order of 5 to 6 meters.

Thus, the sea beyond the reefs will remain rough to very rough in the vicinity of Mauritius and Rodrigues.

These swells are mainly breaking in the western, southern and eastern lagoons during high tides and may cause inundation in low lying coastal areas.

The regions at risk for Mauritius are as follows:

From Tombeau Bay to Le Morne

From Le Morne till Blue Bay

From Blue bay till Quatres Soeurs

Fishermen, pleasure-crafts users and the public are strongly advised not to go out at sea and in the lagoons as well as avoid the beaches.

The high wave warning is still in force in Mauritius and Rodrigues and will be valid till 2200hrs tomorrow Saturday 11 July 2020.

Trains of heavy South-Westerly swells of 5 to 7 meters will continue to influence the open seas.

During the last six hours, waves of the order of 4 to 5 meters have been recorded at Blue Bay.

Cool weather continues with a low of 12C recorded in Grand Bassin on the 22nd July:

GENERAL SITUATION :

(1) The cold airmass has caused a drop in temperature of about 3 degres Celsius during the day over the island.

(2) Another anticyclone is approaching the Mascarenes from the South-West and will maintain the cold weather over our region.

Wind South-Easterly at about 25 km/h, strengthening gradually tomorrow with gusts of the order of 70 km/h in exposed areas.

Ventures in the open sea are not advised. The swells will be of the order of 3 metres 50 tomorrow morning.

GENERAL SITUATION :

1) A heavy swell warning is still in force in Mauritius, valid till Monday 27 July at 0400 hours.

2) The rather strong anticyclone to the south of the Mascarenes is maintaining a rather windy and cold weather over our region. Clouds in the trades are influencing local weather.

High Wave Warning for Mauritius valid up till 1000 hours Wednesday 05 August 2020.

Heavy swells from the south south west of the order of 3.5 metres are influencing the open sea in the region of Mauritius.

These swells may break along the western, southern lagoons during high tides.

Fishermen, pleasure-crafts users and the public are strongly advised not to go out at sea and even on the southern and Western lagoons during high tides.

Swells of the order of 6 m 50 have been recorded over the last 24 hours by the Blue-Bay holometer and will persist until tomorrow.

The strong swell advisory, issued for Mauritius and Rodrigues, is maintained until 4 p.m. this Sunday, September 6.
