Is only the first part of RTH worth it?

Aloha everyone!

As I get notoriously car sick, and don't really want to spend and entire Maui day in the car (ostensibly yelling at my husband to slow down), I wasn't planning on doing RTH during our trip in June.

But - do the experts think driving part of the way would be worth it? How far should we go? We would be interested in short hikes, waterfalls, bamboo forests and the like. We are staying at Napili Kai, but are willing to drive to explore if it's worth a short jaunt.

Thanks ahead of time!

Do you have a good map of the RTH? You need one.

There is no law saying that you have to go all the way to Hana. The Road is the attraction, not the town. So sure, go part way if you wish.

On the way or same general direction is the Iao Needle, Maui Ocean Center, Paia, Makawao ... other sites along the way.

You might want to go as far as Twin Falls. That is the straightest part of the highway. Other than that, it probably wouldn't be worth it. I do have a girlfriend who gets very sick in a car. We were able to go all the way past Oheo Gulch because she drove. Otherwise she wouldn't have made a mile!!

The Garden. of Eden is a good place to turn around. it's about 10 miles down the RTH. There is a grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees right by the driveway. If you are willing to pay the admission charge you might enjoy the gardens, also. You drive through and park here and there to stroll the paths and look out at the beautiful scenery, including a distant waterfall.

Read the Top Questions on the right side of the page.

There are a couple of Road to Hana Top Questions, Stops along the Road to Hana and Beyond and Food stops on Road to Hana. Mile Markers (MM) are included.

On the good Maui websites Top Question, there is a section for Road to Hana.

I would go as far as Garden of Eden at MM-10.

As barefoot says, order the free Air Maui map. It is really nice. It includes some of the better stops on Road to Hana. Mile markers are included, though in increments of five (color-coded in between for each mile). You can add other stops on Road to Hana to the map.

Continue if you can. Road to Hana has many stops. So you kind of stop every mile or so. Just before Road to Hana is Hookipa Beach. Watch the surfers or kite surfers.

msfuzz has added almost all of the Top Questions to the Maui forum.

Order the free travel planners for Hawaii & the Island of Maui (and any other island). You can also read them online:

Garden of Eden is very nice and IMHO worth the $15 a head price. You might be able to venture a few more miles down to Keanae Peninsula which is also a great stop.
