It has been suggested that we overnight in Petosky on the way to Mackinac Island. One night only, Monday June 21. We would arrive early afternoon. I am looking and not really sure what to do or see on a Monday afternoon and evening. We would leave early Tuesday morning to get on ferry to the Island. Would we be better served somewhere else? We don't want to go too far out of the way. Maybe Mackinaw City?

I love Petoskey but for your situation Mackinaw City is a better fit. Take the morning ferry that goes under the bridge. So fun!

Coming from where ??

And who is “we”?

Petoskey is much more upscale than Mackinaw city, but staying in P. you’re still 35 to 45 minutes away from Mackinaw city boat docks ... and that’s not taking the scenic way, ( which one could easily spend half a day on ... going through Harbor Springs and up The Tunnel of trees { M119}, yada yada yada).

Arriving early afternoon will give you a chance to explore downtown Petoskey and maybe spend time in Harbor Springs and have a lovely dinner. It’s a Monday you won’t get stuck with a two night minimum stay. Downtown I like the Stafford’s Perry Davis ... on the east side (on the way to Mackinaw city) I’ll like the Stafford Bayview Inn. There are also your typical cookie cookie cutter chain motels as well as a casino south of town (which I believe has a hotel if you’re into to the casino type of thing) and then there’s the yachting / equestrian / golf resort ... Bay Harbor ... which is just west of Petoskey

How long are you on the island, and where are you going after ?

We is 50's active couple driving up after getting off a flight to DTW. Our flight leaves Knoxville at about 7;45am and lands at DTW at 9:30am. Monday night needs to be somewhere on the way to the island. Tues and Wed is at Inn on Mackinac, and plans are to stay in Frankenmuth on Thurs for a Friday 4:05 pm flight home. Plan for Friday before flight is Henry Ford museum and village. We are early birds and are usually wide awake by 6:30 am and sound asleep by 10pm.

Ahhhh ... yes, I believe I read a prior post.

930 arrival + 1 hour to get luggage get a rental car and get out of the airport area ... +4 1/2 hours to Petoskey probably means you would arrive there about 3 PM depending on your driving speed and rest stop frequency (Michigan rural freeways are 75 mph, but traffic flow is usually high 70s low 80s).

Since you’re going to be off to Mackinac Island early the next morning, probably a “normal/chai hotel” or mom and Pop would make more sense, unless you want to spend the money for one of the aforementioned hotels.

Petoskey to Mackinac city is 45-ish minutes (not taking the scenic route). Scenic route is 1.5+ hours depending on the number of stops,

While Petoskey/ Harbor Springs is a much nicer area to explore your arrival afternoon, you could also stay in Gaylord, which is a which is on I-75 and a direct shot to Mackinac city, (about 60 miles / 50 minutes North and no two-lane roads). Lots of hotels near the freeway innerchanges ... and while downtown Gaylord has its charm, and obviously isn’t comparable to P/HS.

And of course the first post to recommend staying in Mackinac city area is also an idea to consider. Makes for a slightly longer first day ... and while Mackinac city isn’t As much of a “stroll around in the afternoon evening kind of place” as are Petoskey or Harbor Springs, there are still things to see.
