Driving from San Francisco to LA

Hoping someone can offer advice. Hoping to drive from San Francisco to Avila Beach in a day, stay there for two days and then drive onto Los Angeles. This will be in August 2018.

Are there any roads that are closed which impact on this travel? What routes would people reccommend? Looking for a balance if scenery and not spending too long on the road.

Won't be able to drive straight down the most scenic stretch of Big Sur because of that road closure. Strongly suggest changing one night to Monterey. 2 would be ideal, but understand you might not want such a long trek to LA.

Best route to Avila would be I-280s to 85s to 101s. That's about 4 hours.

Scenic route: I-280s to Highway 1 at Pacifica down to Monterey, cutting over to Salinas via Highway 68 to connect with Highway 101 would add approx. an hour to your drive.

If you try to dio into part of Big Sur, that could add several more hours to your travel day.

You are the best judge of how much time you are willing to spend driving, but the scenic drive in #2 is how i would go. Forget the overnight in Monterey advice if you are set on getting to Avila.

Stay safe.

This is a good point -- why are you making the drive? If the point is to see the coast, then spend two nights in Monterey to see Big Sur, then go on to Avila or straight to LA if preferred. If the point is to get to Avila or LA as quickly as possible, then Kibbles' scenic route will at least give you a glimpse of the coast. And if you can stretch that day out JUST a bit more, visit Point Lobos State Park south of Monterey before connecting to Hwy. 101 inland. That at least gives you a tiny glimpse of the magnificent coast that you're missing. Then start making plans to come back again to do it justice!
