Camper or Car?

Hi Forumers,

We have a week to spend between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast between 6-13th January 2017. With no itinerary yet we thought that a campervan would be a good shout, but struggling to find rentals and a couple of forums have suggested its not a great way to do things.

We are probably going to spend slightly more time towards Sunshine Coast, with Fraser Is, Rainbow Beach, Noosa etc but we will be going to the gold coast too. Our flight is into S.Coast and out of Brisbane Not got any plans to stay in Brisbane but we are happy with that.

Are we better off just getting a car and booking accommodation as and where we find ourselves rather than hiring a camper and trying to find somewhere to pitch?

Has anyone done a similar thing?

Thanks in advance :)

You have picked a bad time to visit the Gold and sunshine coasts or indeed any where along the east coast as it is peak holiday time. With campers there is a misconception amongst overseas travellers that you can just prop for the night where ever you please the reality is that camping in car parks or on beach reserves is for the most part strictly prohibited and you will need to stay in registered camping grounds.

You would be far better off hiring a car and stay in caravan park cabins or motels. Keep in mind though that accommodation will be tight and pricey and some providers will require minimum night stays at that time of the year.

FWIW I'd start working on an itinerary and look at booking accommodation asap.

Hi Famrick,

Unfortunately it is peak holiday season in the UK too, and the only time when me and my partner could take five + weeks off work. So we haven't got much choice!

Thank you very much for that info, makes the choice an easy one. Was hoping to wing it when we got there and see where we fancied staying but don't want to get stung with extortionate cost or inadequate accommodation.

Thanks again, and thank you Big Jim!

Book a rental car now - you can always cancel or amend but the prices will go up rather than down. Accommodation is likely to be approaching extortionate at that time of the year being that it is peak season. Last minute availability is somewhat governed by the weather at the time.

www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au for choice/prices. Start planning your trip so you can book some accommodation at least around Sunshine Coast - as above, peak peak holiday time anywhere near the coast

Car, definitely.

Also, with Fraser, you won't be taking your car there - you will be parking up and doing a tour of the island.

With seven nights, you could look at night 1: arrive and stay Rainbow Beach, night 2 full day Fraser Island Tour, staying Fraser overnight and continuing the tour next day, Stay Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay night 3.

Nights 4 and 5, stay Noosa/Noosaville/Mooloolaba/Caloundra - whereever you can get the best accommodation.

night 6.......Broadbeach/Cooloongatta maybe. night 7.....do you have a night 7? If so, perhaps somewhere close to Byron Bay.

Car. Book everything ASAP.

Many coastal locations will have the popular (cheap and medium) accommodation booked from last year. The "High End" will still have some vacancies in the most popular areas.
