Road trip through South West Western Australia

Hi all

We are a family of 2 adults and one 3yo who will travelling by motorhome on a short 1 week trip around the South West of Western Australia in mid July.

We live in Bunbury so are fairly familiar with the SW coastal areas, but have never really explored inland.

We have a loose plan to pick up the motorhome in Perth then spend 1 night in Hyden at the Wave Rock Caravan Park, then heading to stay on a family farm in Esperance for 2 nights, onto Albany for 2 nights. We are open to suggestion for the final 2 nights for places to stay before we return the motorhome to Perth but are thinking Walpole, Pemberton or the like.

We are looking forward suggestions also on things to see along the way but are keen on natural beauty or weird and wonderful local oddities. We definitely would like to give Bluff Knoll a go if we can manage with Miss 3.

Thanks so much in advance for your guidance.

You have a nice trip planned and as locals you will know it will be cold ( possibly wet too) so pack those warm clothes!

A couple of suggestions-

If you were interested you could look at staying overnight at the 4 Mile Camp at Fitzgerald River NP- Hopetoun entrance and sealed road. A good way of breaking the Esperance to Albany drive and fabulous coast and flora.

In Albany either of the Big 4 caravan parks are great locations.

Then any either Walpole or Pemberton are terrific spots. Are you looking at caravan parks? There’s also some National Park stays ( maybe unsealed roads) but deep in the forest could be very cold. I noticed the RAC resort in Pemberton has now got camping so you could look at that as a base for exploring lovely Pemberton area. Northcliffe another area to consider and even Nannup if you’ve never been. Perhaps too look at staying even an overnight in Denmark, though its close to Albany has a different vibe.

Oh and you know there’s some camping grounds near Stirling Range NP plus a nice looking campground at Porongorup NP. Not sure how far you’ll get up Bluff Knoll with a 3 year old! There’s holiday Park Pases which are worth buying if you don’t have one.

With a 3yo you might be better off travelling in a car and staying in on site cabins at caravan parks. Not as cold and your 3yo has somewhere to run around and play while you’re making dinner and it’s cold and wet outside.
