UK to QLD Australia where to live

I have a family of 4 my self and husband both 29 and two children 5 and 3

Looking to move to QLD Australia!

Where? We don’t know! It’s so hard...

We want a affordable house around $300,000 to around $550,000

(We will rent the first year)

Want to be near to Brisbane

Don’t mind being an hour to an hour half away!

We have look at Toowoomba, Ipswich, Logan city,

Is there any where else? what are the best suburbs for schools some where you can make friends and not get bored!

Somewhere that’s are shops, cafe, restaurants and a few bars.

A little hipster a mix of ages but where my kids can feel safe and grow into there teens and not get bored so easily.

Where is your work going to be located? Your housing budget is very low, $300k is a 2 bedroom unit in a dodgy area of Toowoomba, $550k will give you more options but it won’t get you closer to Brisbane.

What visa were you planning on getting, unfortunately moving here permanently isn’t as easy as just wanting to live here, if you’re not a citizen you need to come on a skilled workers visa then go through the motions to become a permanent resident.

We are going down the 491 visa route in the view to applying for permanent residency after 3 years. Using the visa means we have to stay in regional Aus and out of Brisbane we’ve been looking at possibly Ipswich or somewhere similar. Mainly wanting to find out what are considered the good/bad areas and if there are any other outer suburbes worth considering. My husband is an mechanical engineer, so ideally be relatively close to industry he could find work in.

There’s so much to consider and I don’t know much about each place as somewhere to live - not in detail, but on impression I’d rather live in Toowoomba than Ipswich or Logan, personally.

The median house price in greater Brisbane is $738,000, the market is rising sharply ... as is the case anywhere in the world the lower prices will only get you into an area one wouldn't consider "the best suburbs for schools"

Ipswich is a city of differences, areas like Newtown are full of beautiful older homes but again your budget needs adjusting, there are also some areas I wouldn't walk alone at night although Brisbane is a relatively safe city. It can also be extremely hot and cold.

Also look at https://www.pomsinoz.com/

And another mention for Toowoomba: it is Australia's largest agricultural engineering centre making specialised farm machinery in a large number of small to medium businesses.

Houses are not cheap in Toowoomba, but maybe one of the estate areas that have sprung up around Highfields and further.

There are many very good and expensive schools there too and alot of old school country money which drives a bit of the vibe.

Many find the weather up there a bit more bearable as you dont get the humidity from the coast.

I would not limit ones self just to Queensland . Firstly , it is about employment and where the jobs are .I understand that the Government is keen to get people into regional Australia. My understanding is that Mechanical Engineers in Australia work in Building services. These are in an Elect and Mech departments within the office . Mainly the employment is in Major Capital Cities . That said there are firms in Regional Australia . Such as GHD.

I would first be looking at the employment side of things. Also it does help when you work in an International Firm ,say like AECOM. I remember the Canberra office had a young man from the UK they brought over. Some of the other people went from Australia to Singapore .In the past there where 457 Visas , however moving forward not sure what and how the Australian Government is going to move forward on this.

As pointed out Housing is very expensive in Australia and looking forward I can not see that this will change in the next 5 years . Australia has kept out of recession based on population grow from people moving here. Add to this low interest rates ,prices just keeping going north. So till interest rate move up to historic average I do not see much of a change. I currently have a property vacant , that is part of an Estate . It is going up in value ,I just leave it. I have another property that I was going to sell last year it was around 850 k . Now I have an offer of 1 million on the table. This is because the person who own the block next to it can join them to build 6 Town Houses.

I suggest keep on researching and gathering Information.

Good Luck

One person seemed to fail to understand that the median house price is not the same as the type of affordable housing available. It is possible to get a 3 bedroom house for $500,000, especially when you are looking at those areas.

The greater Brisbane area and the surrounding regions of Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast can be fairly affordable. With the regional visas you can often live in the greater Brisbane area, but within commuting distance. I know plenty of people who live in the Southern Sunshine Coast and take the train in to work every day. Then of course areas like the Sunshine Coast have a strong healthcare sector if you work in those areas, while somewhere like the Gold Coast has a diversified economy that does lean heavily on tourism.

Luckily 80% of the jobs in Brisbane are out in the suburbs anyway, and as a mechanical engineer, your husband could find work in places all around Brisbane. I would say that the Redlands area might be the place to look, if you visa allows you to live there, as there are lots of places where he might be able to find work. But also, he might want to consider looking for Fly in Fly out work in the mines, which pays well and means you can live anywhere.
