Sougia in October?

We have holidayed on the south coast of Crete for many years, lately always early/mid October, but we do really like small, quiet, and genuinely Greek places, and our current destination each year has grown in size and is also very busy in October. Sougia has been mentioned as an ideal place for us, and, looking on Google earth street view, it does look ideal, but will all the tavernas, hotels and bars be open in October?

You could try an email to info@sougia.info which is the contact for the village website https://www.sougia.info/index.htm

Everything in Sougia will be open in October. The season finishes at the end of the month.

Check the accommodation section in the link bongoblog has given you. Most of the entries show prices up to 31 October, a few even to mid-November. The tavernas and cafés will be open as long as there are visitors wanting to eat and drink. You won't go hungry.

Yes it's an urban myth that everywhere starts to shut down at the start of October and everyone should stay in the larger towns come October such as Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Ag Nik ;-) :-)

In the past it was often said on the forum that the resorts start to close down at the start of October with the added advice to stay in the larger towns such as Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Ag Nik but hopefully that Urban Myth has been put to bed.

We were in Sougia at the end of October last year -- from the 28th until November 1, actually -- and found that while the village was in end-of-season and shut-down "mode," it wasn't dead, and enough places were still open to serve the tourists who kept arriving each day. Most of the beach bars were shuttered and a number of accommodations had already closed, but there was still a good selection of places to eat, two mini markets were still open, and people arriving with no accommodation bookings were easily able to find rooms to let or beds in hotels like the Santa Irene, where we stayed for the four nights.

A few businesses did close while we were there (a couple of tavernas, and Roxanne's coffee and pastry shop), but Sougia was much livelier than Agia Roumeli and Loutro, which we had been to previously during our trip. Sougia wasn't bustling by any means -- it was fairly quiet -- but far more tourist-related businesses were open there than at the other two villages. We were told the first week of November would see most Sougia accommodations and restaurants wrap up operations for the winter.

Based on our end-of-October experience, I feel confident in saying you would find either everything or almost everything open if you were to visit Sougia in early to mid October.

Staff at hotels and tavernas at all the places where we stayed during our trip along the southwestern coast (Loutro, Agia Roumeli,Sougia and Paleochora) told us that the first half of October is quite busy with steady tourist traffic, especially if the weather stays good and the Samaria and other gorges are still open for trekkers.

I've posted hundreds of photos of Sougia on Flickr if you're interested in having a peek at what the area looks like in October; they're in several albums in my Crete 2017 collection at this link: https://tinyurl.com/Creta2017
