3 days in late December

Does anyone have any suggestions for winter/snow related areas to visit? Would daytrips be better or move to another area. We are coming from Munich and continuing to Venice and then Rome. Have looked into Hallstatt and Zel Am See. Looking for snowy vistas and activities. Had originally thought to go to Switzerland but had heard wonderful things about Munich and Austria that I am hoping to find snowy villages in this area to keep my active group busy.

Hello, for snowy experiences I recommend to visit the areas of the Tyrolean glaciers https:/…tirols-glacier

weather is unpredictable so in december , snow may or may not be on the ground.

as you are talking about salzburg area, what dates will you be there?

you could possibly consider wolfgangsee area where after christmas, the markets continue until the new year and interlink via ferry. really magical and if there is snow low down , as there was last december, it will be heaven. if you stay there you should be able to visit gosau, a ski resort, close to hallstatt and which will have man made snow in event of poor snow conditions.

of course, if you are visiting hallstatt, you can take the cablecar up the krippenstein where there would be guaranteed snow at the top

Sorry for the delay in answering nakagoli. We will arrive in Salzburg 12/23. We planned to stay until 12/28 when we will travel to Rome (possibly via Munich).

Instead of taking daytrips we wanted to relocate to a village that allows for the tabogonning, snow sledding/tubing, possibly snowboarding/skiing (if time permits).

The Salzkammergut area sounds beautiful - where would I base for “snow activity” option?

I have looked into the Gastein area as well. Any opinions?

The Anstenau or Flachau areas? And many others.

Any advice I am grateful for.

You could look at Gosau, Russbach and Abtenau. Flachau is good but not heard of Anstenau---if you mean Faistenau then the tobogganing doesn't usually start until 26th Dec. as it is not a ski resort a such and doesn't have snow making facilities.

Oh my mistake, I meant Abtenau. I am finding lodging in Flachau and Bad Gastein (and also Bad Hofstein). Do you have any information in either of these areas? I am trying to find a balance between a nice village and a ski area (although we are more interested in hiking, tubing, taboganning). The Salzkammergut area seems beautiful with the lakes but I don’t know if there will be the snow activities we are wanting.
