where to stay ion Malta

We will be spending 5 days in Malta in mid-September, and wonder which city would be best for a home base, and why do you suggest that recommendation?

I understand that public transport throughout is great which is why I am asking for a great home base location. Please let me know if I am incorrect about that. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest looking at Sliema as a base. Good access to Valletta - 20 mins by bus or 10 minutes on the ferry. Sliema has good bus connections to Valletta bus station where regular and frequent services are available to all parts of the island. There are number of direct services from Sliema Ferries - principally Rabat (for Mdina) via Mosta (for Mosta Dome) to St Paul's Bay, Mellieha and Cirkewwa (for the Gozo ferry). Bus services are good, but can be very crowded and subject to traffic delays.

How active a holiday do you plan?

This may impact on the suggestions you receive?

Malta is heavily urban unless you make efforts to get out and about from the main resort areas. That may not be an issue for you but visitors often comment on the mass amount of building taking place here.

We are quite active - walking as much as possible each day to visit and experience all there is to see. I am not sure how else to answer that question.

We are not folks who go travel only to sit on the beach - we can do that right here at home. When we travel, we really work at it.

For reference the bus around noon today took 1.5 hrs, all standing, to get from Bullata Bay to Rabat (Mdina). One hour to return mid afternoon with a seat the whole way.

I always take the ferry Sliema to Valetta. 2.80 Euros roundtrip.

Still believe Sliema is the best base for Malta as it's the buffer between Valetta and St. Julian's. Best transit options and lodging options as well.

You can stay further out if you prefer, but travel time can add up; just depends what you want to see.

Sliema we are here at minute and its so easy to get about on bus&there's a ferry from siliema to Vallarta really quick&cheap. Tip if getting buses walk to the Silema ferry stops as further on you won't get a seat!!

Sliema is a good location for transportation to Valletta and other parts of the island. If you are into partying and night life, St. Julien's is a good option. It's a bit further from Valletta than Sliema, but public transportation is readily available.
