I've only just come across this message, so it's too late to help the original enquirer, but for those who have a similar question regarding transport in the future and don't want to hire a car: Cervignano del Friuli is on the main line to Trieste, so plenty of trains. APT and SAF have buses from Cervignano to Aquileia and onwards to Grado. I suspect they're timed to meet trains, as I didn't have much time to wait at all when I went to Aquileia as a day trip from Trieste some years ago. Hoping to go back to Aquileia next year.
