Your proposal for a one day trip from Florence to Cinque Terre and Pisa and back is far too challenging and too ambitious. Yes, it is too much to see and travel to and back from Cinque Terre and Pisa in one day as a day trip from Florence in part because transportation by train will not get you there early enough and return you to Florence in anything approaching sufficient time to explore either place adequately. Besides you will be shortchanging both cities if it is your intention to visit each one. Do not waste your vacation time. You will be throwing away much of a good travel day that could be spent going to some place closer by. A day trip to Pisa and back to Florence will be enough of a transportation task and challenge. You want to stay at both places long enough to say that you were really there. Drive-by window vacations for getting to know Italy is not the best way to travel in that country. CT deserves more than one day for sure but in comparison Pisa deserves more than a day too for much different reasons. Comparative cultural importance is different with vastly different dimensions to be considered. One place has architectural design on display. Hope this helps.
