We were planning to take a trip to El Yunque tomorrow & wasn’t able to get tickets to get in... does anyone have suggestions of another “rainforest-y” experience outside of the park by chance? We’ve got three kids amped on the idea of going to the jungle & trying to figure out a good alternative. Easy hike/water feature of some sort in the general area of El Yunque / Luquillo / Fajardo would be awesome. Thanks!

Angelito Trail. Puente Roto. Las Paylas. El Toro trail (to highest point in the forest). Rivers/waterfalls along Road 186 in Rio Grande. Salto Jimenez. Rio Mameyes. Rio Sabana Recreation area (south side). El Hippie (south side).

None of those need a reservation/ticket to access.

Angelito trail head was closed when we went by on Monday. Looked like they were doing repairs of some sort. There is a natural waterslide outside of the rainforest called “Las Paillas” that was fun.

Also, the rainforest is beautiful but a lot of the trailheads are closed still. And the one hike we took did not have a water feature and was not easy...at least not for me. Lol we climbed up to “Juan Diego” and as beautiful as it was....it was really crowded.

Go to the reservation.gov website to the reservation page for El Yunque. You will see dates with the notation "Not Yet Released." Every day at noon they release some tickets for the next day. Make sure you are registered for the site and are ready to go. I got tickets earlier this week for the next day when 20 tickets were released exactly at noon. They were gone in 15-20 minutes.

Sharing incase it helps anyone else - we ended up doing Angelito’s trail & it was awesome! Easy hike for the kiddos (3, 5 &8), beautiful river for a swim & fun rocks to play on. We also did Las Paylas & had so much fun. The first big slide was a little much for the kids but if you hike down a bit more to the right there’s a smaller one that was perfect for them. A little grotto with a waterfall was super cool & then cliff jumping / a prettt sketchy rope swing is available for the wild at heart. Perfect solutions for when we couldn’t get in to the actual rainforest.
