Places to go

Is there anywhere to go outside the hotel where we can go for a walk or a meal or to look at shops or do I rely on organised trips?

There are only a few resorts that are within walking distance of anything. Resorts in the El Cortecito area are the best located. There are a few shops and bars in that area. Look into staying at one of the Palladium resorts. Punta Cana started as just the airport and resorts started popping up along the coast. Now as businesses are going in they are inland off the main road. Google map search punta cana and you will be able to see what I mean.

Not really it's not like Mexico where you can take a cab ride into PDC with all the shops and bars. PC is basically a string of resorts on the beach. as for shops theres a few places /shacks along the beach that sell plenty of tourist junk and fake jewelry but thats about it. tours are the way it works in PC most are usually back by the end of the day.

Were doing Antigua this summer out of all the places we've been too never been to Antigua St Johns in Antigua near there cruise port area seems to be like a place similar to what your looking for.

Other islands where its similar to Mayan PDC . Aruba, (Oranjestad) Barbados (Bridgetown), St Lucia (Gros Islet), St Marten Phillipsburg and Marigot (Last year's hurricane hurt them bad) .

Out of all of these the resort styles are different then what you would get in Mayan Riveria Mexico or PC resort which are similar to the Mayan. The closest would be Aruba but prices for Similar Aruba AI resorts (RIU Barcelo) are usually a lot more $$$ then there Mexican or PC resorts.
