Seeking the expert advice of those here on the 'best' route to take from Bandon on the coast to Fort Klamanth as an access point to Crater Lake, as part of a larger PNW trip in late July/early Aug. We have 2 nights booked in Fort Klamanth so we have a full day at CL in between. Heading to Bend after night 2.
Google Maps is showing three options, all with roughtly the same 4/4.5hr drive time:
1. Hwy 138 via Roseburg/Tokatee Falls
2. Hwys 99/227/62 along the South Umpqua River
3. I5/140 via Grants Pass.
Seeking advice on whether any of these routes are recommended/not recomended over others. Not looking to make a huge amounts of stops along the way - maybe 1 or 2 for perhaps short (30min), easy hike (we are not huge hikers but will walk for great scenery/viewpoints!) or if there's other standout attractions plus a stop for lunch (and possibly supplies/fuel, though we can do this in Bandon). Nice scenery en route is a plus, and as Aussies we are fairly used to long distance driving though would probably prefer to avoid any hairy, scary roads!
Appreciate your help!
