Been here I dont know how many times with friends and during my photo trips. Foods are always good, for locals, I highly recommend to try "Ginataang Kuhol" and "Karekare Tuwalya" never missed to be on my order list. The restaurant is also part of...an old art gallery, one of many famous in Angono, Rizal.More

If you are feeling adventurous, dine at this famed exotic restaurant in the art capital of the Philippines. Try the crocodile meat. Try balaw-balaw rice. You can also enjoy itik and other traditional Filipino food.

We ordered a rabbit dish (good), a Balaw Balaw rice (best serve with their bagoong, priced at 1200) and crispy alagaw (cooked like fried kangkong). Their service was slow, took 45 mins for the Balaw Balaw rice to be served. When I made a follow...up, the server was irritated which I find quite rude. There were so many mosquitos and even a stray cat, making the whole dining experience even more unpleasant. Forget about the art gallery, it was really ugly.More

Haven't visited for quite a while, but I'm happy to note that this resto still exists and is almost the same as I remember it. The food is still interestingly weird - where else can you eat palaka and bayawak out of the same bilao...and not bat an eyelash? It's a common fare here, even if it's a curiosity everywhere else. I'm not really a fan of the food they have for the taste of it, but I appreciate the care and creativity they used to come up with the menu. I just use the food as excuse to visit the Art Gallery - it's a huge (up to the 3rd floor of the place) and diverse one. Angono is the Art Capital of the Philippines and a lot of the works of the local artists are displayed here. I love exploring the second floor up the spriral wooden staircase. They have wooden sculptures of religious icons that can be scary when you are all alone in this area. I don't have this kind of fear though so I happily explored and ogled everything on display. There are also old items like those giant storage jars and ancient kitchen implements that never cease to amaze me just how they were able to prepare and store amazing dishes in the days before refrigerators and gas stoves, and all those small kitchen tools that we need today for everyday cooking. There are also paintings in oil and mixed media, and sculptures in materials other than wood. Most everything displayed in the gallery is for sale. There is also a small cabinet of papier mache Higantes dolls that I happily bought as my souvenir for the trip. Some of the serving crew are also artists and they sometimes present their works to the guests, also for sale. I'm real bad at saying NO so I got to buy a small painting. Well, if I can help a budding local artist be inspired at his craft then I'm all for it. Enjoy this resto - there's is no other one just like it in the country!More

There were new dishes on the menu (horse! kalabaw!) and also usual Filipino favorites. I'll go back when I'm in Angono.

Diners from all over the province and even from out of Luzon come to Balaw Balaw for its namesake item - and the art gallery. Sometimes not in that order. The place has not changed much - at least the main structure - where the...framed art works of the province's artists (of the Carlos 'Botong' Francisco genre keep the patrons occupied. Therefore, it does not matter if the food does not come fast. One would be remiss in not checking out the new art work, carvings, murals and other art pieces the Balaw Balaw - the art gallery - has to offer. The complete set of biblical characters of the Last Supper mixed with the souls and ghouls gone awry are plentiful, accessible,e through a spiral staircase. Beware as you navigate the circular steps, for carvings could creep on you. Once upstairs, carvings of local fairies, native deities and creatures, bodiless heads that exudes pain, sorrow and fear mingle with full size carvings covered in reed - blanket. Further down the upper aisle are artworks galore that could leave your food cold. The balaw balaw remains the main menu attraction and with it, the grilled fish, seafood and slightly boiled vegetables. Disappointing was the ginumis which had a spoiled or soured coconut milk. That's not the spoiler. The artwork will keep your heart and stomach occupied well till leaving time,More

We dropped in mid afternoon just to look at their art gallery. It was easy to find and with easy parking. The restaurant was almost empty. It is quite small, so it probably gets very busy at weekends. The gallery is worth a visit. Nominal...charge of P50 if you are not eating there. Limited number of pictures, some for sale, of varying quality. The real attraction is the exhibition of woodcarving which is eclectic and very good. Also the collection of giant papier-mâché heads used in parades in the town.More

We ate here for lunch on our first time in Angono because of its exotic Filipino food and gallery that comes with the resto. Upon entering, we saw that it was really showcasing the culture of Angono being the Art Capital of the Philippines. We...saw samples of higantes, art pieces and sculptures in the dining area. We weren't really feeling game to try exotic meals that time so we went for their chopseuy and sisig. Very affordable we would say but there is nothing special about the taste. There are even better meals in other Filipino restos. What we enjoyed is touring around their gallery after eating. We were given a glimpse of the Angono art culture. 🙂More

My wedding reception held here in Balaw-Balaw last 2015. We were an hour late but our visitors didn't mind because of the surrounding. We had a perfect photo shoot at the gallery and enjoyed the food afterwards.

It's our first time to eat in Angono and this restaurant was highly recommended. Well, it didn't frustrate us as all our orders surpassed our expectations. The spicy pata is a must try! The snail cooked in coconut milk, pakbet with bagnet, sisig deserves 2...thumbs up! Make sure to order your fresh buko to pair your perfect filipino meal.More

For all of the fuss and the bluster that restaurant-goers give about a place's ambiance and setting -- good, satisfying and reasonably-priced food remains a constant. In this case, Balaw-balaw miserably fails. Our group of four arrived at the magic hour of 12 nn, on...a Tuesday right after Easter, and the place was empty. That alone should have been a sign for us to run out of the doorway. Yet, we chose to ascribe it to the post-Holy Week low human traffic. You know how a place would seem empty after the rush of the previous week's activity; as it would turn out, there was definitely another reason. We ordered sinigang na hipon, crispy pata, pancit bihon, six (6) sticks of pork barbeque, halo-halo and rice...and the food came some 45 minutes later. Of course, during the wait, we whiled away the time look at the artwork, both sculpted and painted by resident artist Vocalan, which were admittedly bucolic and dated. As with the great majority of the reviews made of the food, it was extremely ordinary. Not the kind that you would travel too far to savor, so to speak. However, what was shocking was the price. When asked for our bill, we collectively gasped when shown that the each of barbeque sticks cost Php120.00 each(!); so stunned were we that we even clarified with the waiter, who just sheepishly smiled that it was so...the total for the six amounted to almost Php900.00. Grudgingly, we requested that the remaining uneaten pork barbeque sticks be put in brown bags, and joked that it could well be the most expensive "ordinary tasting" barbeque in our recent eating-out history. To the question if we would go there again, our answer would be, "Yes"; but no longer to eat, but to make it a tourist attraction of a different sort...where one of the most expensive pork barbeques in Rizal province can be found! Happy non-eating...More

angono is less than a half-hour drive light traffic from antipolo. famous town for art, angono has wide streets and light traffic. and balaw-balaw is easy to find, ask for directions from anyone on the streets. parking is also easy. food is excellent and inexpensive....for 6 adults, we had an excellent selection: kinilaw na puso ng saging ("must try"), pinakbet na bagnet (which is superb), balaw-balaw sa baboy at talong, plus 6 orders of fresh fruit juices--for less than P2000! and, not to mention, service is friendlyMore

This restuarant is overrated. It offers exotic food such as ants soup and snails but the other main dishes tasteless. The rice was fine and a  soup made with cow testicles and snails was ok the duck was bony and tasteless. The only interesting thing...about this restuarant is the art collection in the second and third floor including alcohol In a jar with a snake.More
