Between the poor food, untrained staff, disrespectful owner, and obstructed views, Athenian house would certainly be classified as a tourist trap in my book. I live in NYC, am a certified sommelier and am a founding investor in a restaurant review platform and this was...honestly the worst restaurant experience I have had in years! Poor food: This restaurant offers only fixed price menus where you will typically end up spending ~€200 per person with wine. The food was totally average and it is clear that the owners are using cheap ingredients to increase their profit. I have attached photos of 2 different courses below. Cucumber slices and tomato are the main ingredients in both dishes. Tasting menus are typically supposed to highlight various ingredients and the creativity of the chef. This seemed like they were repeating cheap ingredients and throwing together whatever they could with them. Deeply disappointing given that they are trying to compete with Michelin star type menus but fall vastly short of anything close. Untrained staff: The staff was clearly untrained and new. Again, given the tasting menu nature and price point we expected top notch service, but not only was that totally absent, they couldn’t even come close to the service that we got in family run restaurants in Oia (try Candouni or Roka for truly memorable meals!) For example, the waiters spilled wine and oil on the table and ground while serving us, forgot to serve us the wine we ordered even after multiple reminders, and gave my partner who is vegetarian a meat dish (he ordered the vegetarian tasting menu so really no excuse for it). I am ignoring the smaller points like our white wine was served at room temperature and we were given steak knives for risotto and forks for puree. Deeply disrespectful owner: The owner, Konstantinos, is the single most disrespectful restaurant proprietor I have ever met. He was walking around the restaurant floor so I mentioned some of these service issues since many of the restaurant owners I know would find it helpful to get feedback in the moment. In the middle of my sentence he cut me off and said “Are you finished?” Konstantinos then told us that because we figured out that the dish was meat before my partner ate the food and didn’t have stains on our clothes from the wine and oil that was spilled, everything was okay (not asking us but rather stating it to himself). He then proceeded to ignore me and only address my partner, who is a male. My partner (who I have seldom seen this upset in the past 20 years) tried to explain why he was so deeply offended at his behavior but Konstantinos just said “Well the restaurant is obviously still busy so I won’t be changing the service. I think we have talked about this enough” and proceeded to go to the man at the table next to us and talk about how unacceptable it was that we complained on a busy night, purposefully loud enough for us to hear. The definition of a tourist trap is a business that knows that customers are not local and therefore are willing to give subpar food/service to customers in order to increase profits - Athenian House fits that description exactly. Also, while Konstantinos might seem fine when he is walking around, be aware that if you bring up any criticism of the experience (of which there are unfortunately many), rather than trying to make the evening more enjoyable, he will belittle you (especially if you are a woman) and talk about you to other guests! Obstructed views: Lastly, the reason this place is still in business despite its many flaws is because of the view. However, be warned that you need to be lucky to get one of the few direct view tables since most tables are in the back from where you can barely see the caldera. In fact, during sunset, half of the restaurant cleared out to go to the street in front of the restaurant to take pictures. You’d be much better off getting a drink somewhere with direct sunset views and then going to a restaurant that puts real effort into their food and respects their customers. There are so many wonderful restaurants in Santorini so please don’t make the same mistake as us, especially if you are looking for a special evening!More

Really enjoyable visit to Athenian house on our honeymoon stay in Santorini. Incredibly windy on the island this evening but the sunset dinner went ahead and we weren’t disappointed. Actually we’re really impressed with the staff and especially waiting staff who were faultless throughout under...some serious weather-related pressure. Thanks to Regina on their staff for her exceptional service. Would recommend to allMore

Athenian house offered a lovely sunset view of the caldera. We were surprised to find a preset menu at Athenian house, but the food was tasty and thoughtful. Portions were not generous but the presentation and flavor was lovely. Service was exceptional and our server...Popi went above and beyond to help us have a great evening.More

Pros: Staff very good, nice views, desserts were acceptable, good wine. Cons: everything else. Bland food often served at room temperature. Nothing in the savory courses was something I would be happy with on its own and when combined as a tasting menu for 120EUR/person...it was outright disappointing. Halfway through the meal my wife and I were counting down until dinner was over. Skip this restaurant and spend your money elsewhere. For the price of a fine a dining establishment you are left with subpar food and an underwhelming experience.More

We were here in the early years when the they first open. In 2016 we visited here and was very impressive with the food. Now after 5 years, when wen went back to Santorini, we visited it again. It is a quite disappointments. The selection...are very limited, only 3 type chef menu you can choice from, which by itself is not a problem, but the food better be great under the choices. That is our first disappointment start. My wife and I both select the discovery menu, which included "Bread", Soup, Salads, Appetizers, and the main dishes plus desserts. The bread are very ordinary, the spreads are better, but is nothing to write home about it. The appetizers is OK, the calamari is very blend, adding the source with only given very little to the taste. The zucchini carpaccio are probably the best of all of them. It has bit sour taste and that added bit of the freshness to the dish, That is about it. The soup is probably the worst, it is cold soup, that is not a big deal, but it tasted just like tomato puree with bit sauces and water added. Those add nothing to the taste. I have the beef and lamb kebabs which is salty as hell, and my wife has the black linguini which is bit too oily. The shrimp is only saving grace in both dishes, but I will expected bit more for a $100 euro menus The desserts are OK, nothing bad. The lemon and basil pann cotta are better than the house balkava which was the main attraction back in 2016. Overall, consider that you have to make reservation, pre-paid $100 euro to confirm the reservation, with limited selection of the menu, plus below average food. I am not sure this is best way to spend the money. Very disappoint!!More

I’m not one to write extremely negative reviews but in the hope that I may spare somebody a hefty bill and a wasted night of their holiday I am going to have to do so. I would just like to add that I absolutely do...not believe in the legitimacy of the 2,3,4 or 5* ratings this restaurant has received. The menu looked promising and at €95 per person for the discovery menu I was hopeful that this would be an experience myself and my husband wouldn’t forget. It was certainly that, but not for the reasons we had hoped! The views are absolutely stunning, we can’t deny this… however this is the only positive comment we can make about Athenian house. The food is extremely bland, tasteless and basic to say the least and leaves you dissatisfied and hungry. Even the breads were stale. The fava bean purée was like tasteless baby food and I don’t know why 2 courses back to back had zucchini which was again boring! The food is no way worth €95 per person! I’d be angry at €25 euros for the meal we had to be honest. The focus is definitely on presentation rather than taste. This is our 3rd time to santorini so we have ate out at a lot of restaurants and this is the first bad one we have been to. The atmosphere was very weird, the staff were robotic and there were no pleasantries exchanged that made you feel welcomed to the restaurant. Each course was brought out so quick you hardly had time to catch your breath in between courses. Another mood killer was the Greek classical music blaring throughout the meal which was really over-bearing! When leaving we were given a key ring with a shoe on it, everyone in there was given one when paying. I can only imagine this was to try and convince us we had actually had a really good time. The waitresses that handed this gift to every female in the restaurant said the same thing ‘this is a gift for the lady’ … again robotic and not personable at all. We pre-paid €100 for this meal but honestly if you have done the same don’t waste another €150 euros and an hour of your holiday here because it was really disappointing. Luckily up to yet we have had the best holiday of our lives so we laughed off this mis-hap. But if by writing this review the restaurant can make some improvements or we can warn somebody off in the meantime until the restaurant improves then it’s worth my time!More

What a fantastic way to celebrate our 10th Anniversary! Thank you The Athenian House for the AMAZING dinner and WONDERFUL customer service and attention to detail. We chose the Discovery menu and we were very pleased! We look forward to our next visit! If you...want a 5 stat dining experience I suggest you make reservations! A special thank you to Regina who made u feel at home and explained our courses to us. Regina also chased us down to give my husband his ear phone we left behind! Can’t say thank you enough because service for me is more important than the meal and both of my expectations were met!More

We had an incredible meal with a fantastic view. Our server, Regina was kind, friendly and very professional. I would highly recommend this for a celebratory meal or special evening. The baklava is absolutely scrumptious.
