This is off the beaten path with fabulous food. Only 18 seats! You wait outside until a spot opens up. We had the taco rice and the tataki sashimi. Both were great, very flavorful I preferred my sashimi to the taco rice as the fish is amazingly fresh. They include salad, miso soup and iced tea with your meal. Ethel's has been written up on Savor, travel and leisure and bon appetit for good reason. Remember it's cash only.

I'm remise that I have not post a review on TripAdvisor fr Ethel's Grill for over a decade; maybe in the past to discourage tourists from occupying their limited parking stalls on a busy Kalihi street with light industrial shops around it ... lol ... or getting TripAdvisor with Yelp. Sorry for the lack of Aloha, but there a lot a local business workers that love Ethel's Grill. But now, with Ethel's grill being take-out only with no dine-in, I guess it's worth posting even though they (owners/staff) are super busy with all of those take-out orders. Yes, call ahead to place your order that will take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Know what you want since everyone else is redialing their phone number to place their own order. Everything on the menu is GOOD and baby Sumo size. All of their plate lunches come with homemade miso soup that has been simmering in today's fish carcasses and toss greens with their signature dressing included. My favorites are the specials like shime saba (not a regular special) and beef sukiyaki along with regular menu items like Japanese hamburger steak that can be drench with a moat of Ponzu sauce, hunger-filling kim chee ahi (tuna cubed) donburi, and Tataki Sashimi. If there is a special for fried mahimahi, get it since they have one of the best egg-batter fried mahimahi plate lunch which was on the regular menu a decade ago.

The place closes at 2pm. Waiting is on the sidewalk. There are only 7 tables or so. You need to be there by 1pm. If there are more than two parties waiting, then too bad. if you don't like waiting in the heat, then too bad. The neighborhood is a little rough.

Love the comfort food that this place serves up. My favorite dish here is the Ahi Sashimi topped with soy marinated garlic chips. Family run restaurant, been open for a long time, great service.

We went late today, hoping the crowd would be gone, but, there were tons of people waiting. We waited almost an hour, but, sat on the wooden benches and conducted our business. It was worth the wait. I used to work in the area and this was our favorite place to eat. Years have gone by and the quality is the same! Delicious! I forgot how delicious the food is from the just-right salad dressing to the savory miso soup and the perfect ahi tataki! All great! Everyone's food that were being served looked amazing---the mochiko chicken looked so crispy and juicy! Those giant hamburger steaks and loco mocos were humongous. I had the Champuru, which is bittermelon stir fried with tofu and pork and eggs. Such comfort food! I just loved it! I won't wait so long to return. The prices were unbelievable--where else can you get salad, soup and a heaping plate of delicious food for under $10???

Tiny little restaurant in an industrial neighborhood between Honolulu and its airport- keep an eye out or you will miss it! Keep in mind they usually close at 2pm. We will make this a must visit on our future trips to Oahu from now on! Very reasonable prices for good portions of very tasty local staples: tuna tataki (renowned and a must-try!), mochiko chicken, garlic chicken, grilled ahi, saimin, etc. If you don’t mind the neighborhood and very casual working class setting, and wish to be frugal, prepare to enjoy an excellent meal!

I love Ethel's Grill. It's a small and delicious joint that I never a chance to visit when in Oahu. It's true there aren't many seats and it is cash only, but it is a local gem. The food never disappoints and I'm glad to support a business that has been feeding the locals for a long time :) This place is perfect mix of plenty types of cuisine- Hawaiian, Japanese, Filipino, etc. Our plane landed just afternoon, and I was sad that we might be missing the visit since they close at 2pm. Luckily we were able to get our car quickly and fly down to EG just in time. Hubby saw that bittermelon stirfry was a menu item and didn't hesitate to order it (since I NEVER make it at home). Sadly, they were out. No worry tho because the had the garlic ahi instead was completely satisfied. My younger son got oxtail soup because he LOVES their oxtail soup, older son got the mochiko chicken and I got the garlic pork chops. We also got a side order of the ahi tataki and gobbled it right up! I like that they have staples on their menu, but also have a healthy mix of specials. We've had many of the regular items, but it's fun to see what specials they have up for the day each time we visit! It's a busy joint favored by locals and out-of-towners alike, so bring cash and be patient because it is worth the wait! Found out a few days into our Oahu visit that the cook was out for surgery. You better believe that I was super thankful that we were able to get our EG fix. Can't wait to go back!

Ethel's is a perfect lunch spot in Kalihi. Parking is difficult, there are no reservations, so be prepared to wait for one of the five tables. The wait is worth every bite you will then enjoy. Sashimi is the best! Saimin and basically anything you choose, you will want to come back for. Japanese cuisine and Japanese sumo ringer poster decor with bags of rice contribute to the fun ambiance. Cash only! ENJOY!

I love Ethel's. Small, intimate local food at it's best. Has the Hawaiian staples, and ever changing special. I took my nephew from Mainland...he declared it the best Loco Moco ever. Last visit they had Clam Miso soup on special. This place is absolutely authentic, and even though I live 30 miles away in Makaha Valley, I am a regular.

Located inside the Oahu Club next to the pool. Furakaki Chicken and Rib Steak were both good. Served as plate lunches.

I called Ethel's Grill to put in a take out order and the phone just kept ringing so I went in person and to my surprise, they were closed! They put a note on the window that they are now closed on Friday and Saturday. We, the customers helped you to build this little hole in the wall in Kalihi to be what it is today and now you close on us? We, the customers are protesting the closing on Fridays and Saturdays.
