Valter’s Osteria is a fabulous restaurant that I would highly recommend - menu, service and personal attention to our table was outstanding. We were visiting from Australia and we will visit Valters the next time we are in Park City. We spoke to Valter personally and purchased his book. Valter is passionate about food, his restaurant, and making his customers feel very comfortable and welcome.

My daughter & I had dinner at Valter’s Osteria last night prior to attending the theater. The minute we walked through the door we were transported into a culinary world of exquisite food, wine & service! It’s truly impossible to convey how magical it all was. And owner Valter Nassi was there to orchestrate it all! Our waitstaff’s (Edgar), service was excellent.
Those reviewers with negative comments (less than 5 stars) should not patronize dining environments of Valter’s Osteria quality as they are incapable of appreciating the finest dining available. Complaints about price, flavor & waitstaff reflect the reviewer’s lack of social etiquette. This restaurant is unsurpassed by none!

OMF. It was such a wonderful experience. It was recommended by a friend and it is the top Italian restaurant.. if you can ask for Mr. JEM and Ms. CLAUDIA. We had Jem as our server and everything he suggested was topnotch. Every appetizers and entrée was delicious. Claudia was so attentive if and when we needed anything. We never had to ask for anything. The entire staff throughout had such a synchronize service and presentation. The food was plated in front of us with a great explanation. Food was delicious and the menu is very creative. The most soft bread was served with blended Garlic Caper Olive oil. Yummm. Oh and do do do ask for the GELATO. You would want that.. I saw almost every table order one. JEM made the best presentation when serving us the Gelato. I had the best experience. Would definitely recommend. Thank you Jem and thank you Claudia

I’m disappointed at having to leave a negative review. We’ve eaten at Valter’s four times over the last year and each time we had a good experience. I recently tried to make reservations for dinner. I left three voicemails over a three day period. No one returned my call. I called again and finally reached someone on the phone and made a reservation for a Friday night two weeks out. Great. Five minutes later I received a call back from Valter’s indicating that they could not accommodate me (without explanation) for the time that they previously committed to. I was told they were not taking reservations between the hours of 6:15-7:30 pm. I’m not sure if they were saving this timeframe for walk-ins? Needless to say I was not pleased with them canceling the reservation immediately after accepting it. They offered seating either very early or much later but neither were convenient for our plans that evening. I told them about the issue of having three voicemails earlier in the week that were not returned. They blamed it on the “high winds” earlier this week. I’m not sure how that would affect their phones, but okay, I’ll give them a pass. One would have thought, given their mistake, that they would have honored their commitment. Not only were we looking forward to a good dinner at Valter’s, we also wanted to support local restaurants who have suffered loss of revenue during C19. I’m not sure the reason why Valter’s has become so disorganized that they can’t return phone calls, make (and keep) a simple reservation, or provide basic customer service after they’ve failed to provide it (multiple times). Although the food is good, the food is very over-priced. Reluctantly, we will not be returning to Valter’s.

Valter’s Osteria had all the makings of a superb experience, ambiance, decor and good service, but was let down by the food, the actual reason one goes to a restaurant.
The menu is extensive, too much for great food and with the daily specials on top it is questionable how accurate the descriptions are given by the wait staff. Surely it isn’t beyond their ability to have a printed daily special menu, on a blackboard or printed? This way it gives the clientele a chance to cogitate over what might be the best choice.
The duck breast with pear was excellent, the veal with mushrooms tasted as thought the sauce was not home made, not good enough for this type of establishment. The Risotto of the day was described as having caper berries in, not one to be found asparagus instead, and under seasoned.
Desert of fresh peaches with honey were hard under ripe and largely tasteless. The chef preparing the peaches should have known how hard they were and pulled the dish, sadly not and at $25 simply unacceptable.
From the number of large tables eating the same courses there is a large percentage of business diners here, probably on expense accounts, so not caring too much about cost versus quality.
Having spent 5 weeks in Italy this summer Valter’s food doesn’t come close to the humblest Trattoria, in Tuscany, Alessandria or Emilia-Romagna.
I suspect Valter would be disappointed at the quality of the dishes we were served, 20% success rate wouldn’t pass any exam, as I said ambiance 10 out of 10 food 5 at best.

The service was outstanding. Love the atmosphere, but the food was hit and miss. We started with their specialty virgin drink. It was good but too sweet for our tastes. Then we had the tossed caesars salad, made table-side. This was the highlight of our meal. I would go back just for it - and certainly will. It was off the charts amazing but you better love garlic, as we do.My only issue was he made a whole bowl full, piled our plates, then threw out the rest. We would have loved him to leave the leftover. It really is very very good.
But on to dinner. We tried the four pasta sampler. Some was good, some not so good but again - too sweet for the most part. Was surprised that what they offer as a sampler did not represent their best effort.
I had Carbonara. Having lived in Italy I have high standards for this favorite but it didn't even meet a marginal level. It was just not very good. There was little flavor, and the sauce was watery and just not appetizing. Sorry. Ate very little of it.
My wife had a chicken specialty and it was pretty good but not something we would order again.
I will mention that they bring out delicious bread and an amazing dip that you could just drink. But once again, you better love garlic.
Given the amazing reviews we went with high expectations and felt very let down. We had a fun time but wish someone could have told us what to order, other than the waiter. For the high price we were certainly disappointed.

We went all out and had a lovely dinner at this fabulous place. Luigi, our server, took such good care of us as he carefully served up the plates at the table. Finny, one of the hosts, was able to order a beautiful bouquet for our table when the florist cancelled. Everything was delicious! We started with an antipasto of melon, prosciutto, and a fig. Then a pasta sampler, which had a variety of lovely sauces and pastas and then two entrees, (we should have shared one, we were so full by then) the special halibut and the chicken piccata. We topped off the dinner with the gelato, honey and sea salt dessert. We also had a bottle of wine. Very expensive for all, but it was a special occasion so we didn’t mind. If we went again, we would order the caesar salad for two, split an entree and skip dessert because they bring every guest a lovely tiny cup of delicious warm chocolate and biscotti. We enjoyed the experience.

Suzy and I arrived at 530, and were met with an exquisite style and feeling. Yes great restaurants can be felt! Vaulter’s kindness and food met us soon after. The food is some of the finest that Salt Lake has to offer and I shouldn’t limit that comment to just Salt Lake, just Utah, or just the West. Three and ½ hours later we left with our tummies filled with style, kindness, quality, and taste! Thanks Valter

First off, I have extensive restaurant background and my review is based on my personal experience as a customer and a bit by my own professional experience.
The restaurant itself has a nice upscale vibe and the staff seemed to be very professional. The host was straight forward and professional and seemed to consider our needs without us acknowledging such.
The menu was extremely confusing and overwhelming. I understand traditional Italian as we have experience this in Italy with our friends. Food is big and many courses are the norm. The menu addressed this but it was very confusing and quite large which generally I have not found to be consistent with high end restaurants.
I felt the biggest issue for us after our frustration with the menu, was our server. Let me say she hit all the requirements for proper serving but she did not listen to us, rather when we started to ask a question in regards to the menu, she talked over me and started a well rehearsed speel of how to precede. It was unhelpful as she talked quickly and was difficult to understand (I considered that she didn't speak or understand English well). At the end of her suggestions, we were as confused as we started and ended up ordering things she suggested (then I heard the waiter next to our table give the exact same speech). I ordered the salad sampler and the pasta sampler and my husband ordered the Lasagna. Again at this point we just wanted to order something and this is what she suggested. The Salad sampler consist of a small piece of watermelon with some small shrimp and sauce on top, a slice of cantaloupe wrapped in prosciutto and caprese. The Caprese was excellent the other stuff ok. The pastas were all very rich and the Ravioli was good. Honestly the small amount I had wasn't amazing nor filling but that is because it was truly only a few courses of what should by what I believe traditionally should be many more. My husband didn't really like the Lasagna although I am sure it was very traditional.
Again the biggest issue was communication. The service was not nessasarily bad it just wasn't personal. I had ask for a suggestion on wine based on what I ordered (I really didn't know what I was actually getting) and I thought she suggested a white. Also I did not receive my wine until after my food was served (which was odd) and when I did finally received it, it was red ;o), but it was good. Honestly I felt in the dark the whole meal. At the end we decided to decline dessert as the rich food didn't sit well with me but it was customary by the establishment to bring biscotti and Italian hot chocolate at the end. I tasted but didn't finish either but they were both excellent.
In conclusion, the Caprese, bread, biscotti and Hot chocolate were terrific. Service was ok but lack communication and any personal touch...by the book high end service but too robotic. Ambiance was good and I felt the "family touch" of the staff. I feel if the menu was more user friendly and the server listened rather than go through the motions, our experience would have been much better. We probably will not return but that doesn't mean it isn't worth while, it just isn't what we seek in a restaurant experience.

First off, Kamel was our waiter and what an amazing one at that. Charming, accommodating to my food allergy BEYOND what any other restaurant has EVER done, and just a delight to interact with through our meal. Secondly, the food was outstanding. The bread and dipping sauce— I could drink that sauce, dude. The Caesar salad was made table side by hand— GOOD lord that was delicious. Our dinners were phenomenal and DON’T even get me started on the lemon gelato! I don’t even like frozen deserts, but that lemon gelato with fresh lemon, honey, and salt... that was the best dessert I’ve ever had. We even got to say hello to Valter via video chat. Not only will I be returning, I’m bringing every person who loves food with me.

A very pleasant experience in an obviously upscale restaurant. Wait service was excellent. The manager dropped by two or three times. Menu very interesting and full of choices.
But I found the food very bland, even though it looks great. The bread was plentiful and flavorless. Soup was flavorless. The one highlight was the excellent flavor of the duck appetizer. My seafood entree was very bland, even though it looked like it would be full of flavor.
Maybe they are trying for a certain Tuscan set of flavors, but they don't match my experiences dining in Tuscany, Italy.

Simply put, the very best Italian cuisine I have ever had and that comes from someone who has been fortunate to have dined at some of the finest restaurants on the planet.
Not much more to say other than that if you are anywhere near the restaurant, even from far away, this is a dining experience that should not be missed. I would highly recommend the sampler platter. Outstanding!!!

Valters has always been one of our favorite restaurants to go to for special occasions. The service is good and the food is delicious but when we got the bill for our most recent meal there, the corkage fee was $50 and we were taken aback. The highest corkage we have ever paid in a utah restaurant is $25. I wish we would have been told what the corkage fee would be in advance. Had we known it was $50, we would definitely have selected a wine from the wine list. We were offered a cocktail menu but not a wine menu when we were seated. I think diners should be made aware of the extremely high corkage fee. Other than that, our dinner was delicious.

As most of the reviews say, this is a very atmospheric spot. White table cloths, uniformed waiters etc. That aspect is good (although the industrial building feels a bit out of sync). The basic problem is that the food just doesn't live up to it. It's very average and actually quite bad in some cases. The marinara sauce tasted industrial (ditto the croutons on the Caesar salad). Although everything is served from a pan at your table, that must just be theatre. It doesn't taste freshly made. Nothing was memorable. In general, I found the food standards not great across SLC restaurants, and I don't think the kitchen here would survive in other cities. SLC's compensation is that prices are lower - but that's not the case here.

3 years ago, I listened to a basketball podcast with Steve Kerr. Bill Simmons asked him 'In your 35 years of NBA travels, what is the best restaurant in America?' Without hesitation, he responded 'Valters of Salt Lake City'. 3 years later we visited SLC from NYC, eager to try Valters. I made a reservation 2 months in advance. We began with a fantastic Caeser Salad, but then something went horribly wrong internally at Valters. 2 hours later, I received my entree, which was not what I ordered. I am not sure what went wrong, but Valter seemed well aware of it and did not charge us for the dinner.
I am not sure how to review this restaurant. Here is what I know-
1) Steve Kerr says this is the best restaurant in America.
2) Something went horribly wrong on Feb 21st.
3) Valter was genuinely sorry about whatever happened in the kitchen.
I would like to try this restaurant again, but our first try was a debacle.
