Now open for lunch. Tuesday-Saturday 11:30-2pm.In the 1870s, a German immigrant named Otto Toepfer built the old farmhouse, which is now home to Otto’s Restaurant & Bar, for his family. The architecture is in keeping with style of homes built during that time. It has a 2-foot-thick foundation and was built using bricks brought up from Louisiana by barges on the Mississippi River. The Toepfer property on which the house stands once extended from Whitney Way to Gammon Road and from the Beltline to Mineral Point Rd. There are still many relatives of Otto Toepfer living in the Madison area. Otto’s Restaurant & Bar opened in June of 1987, after almost a full year of renovation. Its original owner

On a Saturday 3 couples joined for lunch at Otto's. One of the couples is a frequent diner at Otto's and suggested we meet there. I'm glad she suggested it. There were a few patrons having lunch at the bar but the dinning room was...empty. I suspect during the work week it is much busier. The service was pleasant and efficient. Everyone enjoyed their lunch. I started lunch with a signature cocktail, Gibson See-Thru Martini, and found it to be delicious. My choice was the Steak Frites with horseradish dijonnaise. The steak was prepared as I requested and was perfect. The Frites were wonderful.More

We were passing through Madison and stopped for lunch. Otto's is one of the few (and maybe the only) upscale places open for lunch. We were the only ones there, and were amazed as the food and service is so outstanding. They have a good...wine list with good prices for better wines. The calamari was prepared perfectly. The braised short rib sandwiches were great for lunch. We ended with a chocolate truffle cake that went very well with the red wine - were we not traveling on we might have considered another bottle and another serving of the cake. There were a number of other items on the lunch menu we would like to try. If we pass through Madison again, we will time it to stop at Otto's for a meal.More

Anything you get here will be well above average. From the rolls to the salad to the main entree to the sides and desserts, everything is very, very good. Otto's also has reasonable prices in comparison the quality you're getting. This type of high quality...food is actually usually more expensive than what Otto's charges. Excellent decor and ambiance abounds.More

This was our second time here. We really like both of our meals. Due o Covid 19, wlwe did takeout for both and enjoyed them. Not our favorite Madison restaurant, but very good and would recommend

We ate here recently and loved this place. It is an old house changed over to a restaurant. We ate inside but they did a good job of spacing everyone out. My wife had the mushroom caps appetizer and the duck as a main course...and was very happy with her meal. My son had the stuffed chicken breast. I had the New Zealand mussels and then the lamb chops as my entrée. All were excellent. We all really loved this place and definitely will return on our next visit.More

Dined on the enclosed upper deck. They had space heaters going, but still wore my coat to keep warm in the chill evening. I splurged with the crispy duck salad. Companion had a well done, well steak--still juicy and tender. Really enjoyed the jazz band...with good music that didn't overpower having a conversation at the table. Also had a great chocolate truffle for dessert. Did have a bit more wait between salad and entrees than I would normally tolerate, but it was a special occasion meal.More

This was our first visit. We would be willing to give this restaurant another try, but we will not hurry back. The food was good, but we were not excited by the experience of dining here. Our waiter was just okay, our table was "out...of the way," and there was no background music (that we could hear) to fill the voids.More

Otto's is offering a tasting menu. I chose the carrot bisque, the salmon with tiramisu for dessert. The food was very good and the service was excellent.

We believe that the chef's tasting menu (TU-TH) is your best choice. It has been consistently well prepared. On this occasion, we both had potato soup, Pacific sea bass and Door County cheese cake. The bass was excellent. Two perfectly prepared filets. The fish was...sweet and flavorful. We recommend selecting the tasting menu without wine. You will receive about 1-1/2 glasses of wine for the three courses for $22 extra. Wait staff have always been professional. There is frequently live music on the porch. It is necessary to make reservations. There is also a lower level bar area with high tables for your dining pleasure.More

Having heard about this place before coming to town, we had an advance reservation. And well we did, as the restaurant is - deservedly - quite popular. On a balmy night we sat on the porch and enjoyed what the kichen and the cellar had...to offer. Recommended.More
