This is a famous and world-wide known steakhouse. I do not really understand this reputation while the steak is good but you do not have a lot of choice just a porterhouse for 1,2 or 4 people! We had to book in advance but even if they say that you may book on-line we were unable to complete the process and I had to make a call to finalize the reservation. I received a lot of SMS reminding me the upcoming reservation, asking to send back the confirmation! The last one was with the recommendations, the cash payment and that they can seat just complete parties.
At that point we had a lot of expectations ... So my husband had a steak and he was satisfied despite the fact that he would have eaten fifty percent more while I had a salmon that was good but not exceptional.
I do not know if we return but we recommend to people willing to eat a good porterhouse, keeping in mind that the restaurant don’t accept credit card.

The steak there is still really one of the best in New York. Our steak for two was perfectly cooked, so juicy and the charcoal grill smell is to die for. The bacon is amazing too. We had no problem with the table service at all. Our waiter is nice and friendly. However, the host at the restaurant was a really turn-off. No greeting, no smile. We had a booking, were there 5 mins before the booking time, but got seated 15 mins after the booking time. This was rather unacceptable for New York restaurant standard.

I think by now the reputation, history, quality of food and staff are pretty much legendary. So one more review.
From entering Lugers and meeting Ronnie at the front the client service is on point. The staff is trained to treat the clients like family and it shows. We felt more than comfortable and since it’s still technically covid we felt that the tables were spaced out enough inside that we were not on top of all the other tables. Waiters were wearing masks and there were plexiglass partitions between tables.
The food was really terrific. From the fresh rolls and bread to the iconic Peter Lugers home made sauce the meal starts out on the right foot. The steaks well if you know how you like it cooked, let them know so it’ll be just right. The meat is aged beautifully and you can absolutely taste the quality in every mouth full. The sides are great. Nothing fancy. After all it’s a 100 plus year old German beer hall. But there is a nice old time feeling that you get when you’re here. The deserts are pretty awesome. Especially the pecan pie and the home made schlag.
Bring cash because the don’t take credit cards unless it’s their card.
Whether going for a birthday, special event, meeting or just because you want a top quality steak (the fish is terrific -I’ve heard) you’ll definitely be happy with the package and want to come again.
Thanks for another great meal and experience.

This is a famous and world-renowned steak house. We travelled halfway across the world to try it. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience. The number one, most important tip is that you MUST make a reservation. I cannot stress this enough. We tried many times to phone up the restaurant to make a reservation beforehand, but could not get through. In retrospect, I wish that I had persisted. We went on a public holiday. We made the mistake that opening hours are 12:45pm on Sundays and holidays, rather than the usual opening time of 11:45am. We joined the queue outside until the doors opened, then joined the waiting list and waited 90 minutes to get a table. It was clear that customers with reservations were treated with respect, whereas those without reservations were made to feel unwelcome by all of the front of house staff (I was audibly referred to as a "no-res"). We watched the customers with reservations walk right in past the queue, finish their meal and exit the restaurant before we were even seated. The porterhouse steak for two was very expensive, underseasoned and poorly cooked (we requested rare. The majority of the steak was raw/cold). It was also a medium size and not as large as expected - we required side dishes to be full, and we are not large people. The redeeming factor was that our waiter was excellent. I hope that our tip went to him, and not management. We will never return nor recommend this restaurant to others. It is good to hear that others have an enjoyable experience here.

I really wanted to like it and despite all of the recent bad reviews I held out hope that just maybe the steak would be worthy of the Peter Luger name and reputation. I had no expectations of friendly service, quality sides at a good value or even an interesting wine list. And they didn't disappoint. The host was abrupt, the German potatoes were like home fries from a breakfast diner, the dinner rolls were cold and hard, and the cheapest California cab at $90 was mediocre at best. Oh, and the bacon appetizer must have come from the same diner. That's all fine, I could live with that.
We were there for the steak after all. All we expected was a quality steak cooked to order. It's simple, you order the steak for the number of people and request a temperature. We ordered a steak for two, temperature rare. And repeated, rare...very rare, please.
It came out medium rare (at best) on a hot plate with hot butter on it. Actually, only the very center was pink, not red, and the edges were well done. Our waiter quickly served us each a few of the center pieces and took off. Within two minutes it cooked up to medium and the ends medium well. Not only was it overcooked, but it was under seasoned. By seasoning I mean salt and pepper. The meat just had no flavor, except for the melted butter it was sitting in.
It wasn't much to ask - all we expected was a quality, flavorful steak cooked to order and they couldn't do it. Zero stars. Someday soon it will catch up with them.

This old style steakhouse was once great, but the quality of the steak has declined and the place has become a tourist trap. The service was always rough and that was part of the charm because the meat was delicious. Now the service is no longer charming. The place is crowded and noisy.

The original Peter Luger's steak House is located in Brookllyn NY.. It resides in a neighborhood in transition. The meat is indescribably delicious. This entree is large, juicy, cooked to your exact specifications. The tomato salad is a rare treat as well. Spinach is another delicious side dish. The meal is so filling and delicious that you will not even think of dessert. The waiters are middle aged men who are very helpful and whom you will enjoy. There is a second Peter Lugers in Great Neck, Long Island ,however, stick with the original old tavern style restaurant that does not take reservations. You will never find a better steak even in the Great Western United States. Once you have had a steak at Peter Kuger's you will compare every steak anywhere to this exquisite experience.

We had a reservation at 3:45 p.m. and despite a lobby full of people we were seated promptly. Our server was excellent. We had a nice bread basket brought out immediately. We started with the bacon strips (a must), ordered the steak for two, fries and creamed spinach. The steak was prepared a perfect med-rare, the fries were light, crunchy and airy...wonderful. If you can go just once, do it!

Thanks to Cuomo’s draconian policies, for our first visit to Peter Luger we could only sit outside. We were apprehensive (it was 25 degrees and windy last night).
There are some tables against the restaurant side of the building and some across the sidewalk against the street, probably a total of ten or twelve tables. Each table has plastic barriers around three sides creating a private pod, and a heat lamp hanging above the center of the table. For some inexplicable reason, only 2 or 3 of the heat lamps provide light, while everyone else sat in eerily dark pods. Every customer we saw kept their coats and hats on the whole meal. (My husband had to keep his gloves on until the food came, and his feet were freezing under the table.) Everyone seemed to to be trying to make the best of it, even having birthday and other celebrations, but we felt like that image of tramps warming themselves around a barrel fire.
To Peter Luger’s credit, the food and service are as stellar as their reputation attests. If we had been sitting inside I would have ranked this among the best NYC restaurant experiences ever. But (to no fault of Peter Luger’s) it was pretty miserable sitting outside, and not the way to enjoy a $100+ per person meal.

Was in town from FL and had dinner with another couple who eat here fairly regularly. We started out with bread, large cocktail shrimp and sliced tomatoes and white sweet onion with Luger's outstanding sauce. Each couple had the "Steak for 2" that was out of this world. Needless to say the steak was outstanding, tender, tasty and plentiful! For dessert we all shared apple strudel with whipped cream and holy cow ice cream sundae. This place legitimately lives up to the hype and is highly recommended when you are in the city.

We were recommended this place during our visit to New York and were impressed by the food. The steak (ribeye) which we ordered was a large portion for 2 people, and was delicious. This has to be one of the best steaks i have had in a long time.
We also ordered for a cheesecake (which comes with fresh cream) which was surprisingly lovely. They have long list of wine which can be paired with the meat.
The service is ok, the staff I doing were a bit uptight but the food was so good that we didn’t mind them.
Highly recommend this place esp for steak lovers, but would recommend to book in advance to ensure that you get a proper table and don’t have to sit on the bar.

This was my first visit to PL as well as my wife and grand kids and a repeat for my son and daughter-in-law. In all, seven of us. Now keep in mind I read reviews before trying a place but always let my dining knowledge and hands on experience do the talking for me. We were greeted by a pleasant friendly Maitre D and were seated in less than 10 min. with reservations. Wait staff were spot on getting drinks running very fast. Within 10 minutes our orders were taken. It might have taken 15 min for our orders to come. Steaks for four were shared by five. One grilled salmon and one filet of sole. The sides were PL’s noted 2 bacon slabs, then onion rings, German fried potatoes, broccoli couple salads and bread. So the steak was as good as any high end steak house around. The sole was as big as the plate served on and salmon was perfectly done and tasty. Now the sides need a lot of work. The slab bacon was delicious but come on $8 per slice? Broccoli was bland, onion ring very good, salad ok, German fries that PL is supposed to be noted for, well I can rattle off half dozen breakfast places with better potatoes. The bill came to $575 without tip. We left $120 tip. That works out to just about $100/person. So Main part of meal 5 stars, sides and drinks 2 stars. I know restaurants have skyrocketed in prices but I think PL has always been $$$$. Btw Brooklyn is fun, fun, fun.

We’ve tried variety of the offering and we are indeed pleased of the tastes.
Our waiter was quite friendly and attentive.
If the reservation receiver/ host could be more welcoming on his approach and attentive on his list - will be more than happy to try again. As first timer and excited of trying the known dishes in the restaurant, attitude- it does matter.
Overall it’s worth a try.

New York’s most storied steakhouse (in operation since 1887) serves up an amazingly tender porterhouse. Excellent steak but exceptional burgers (served only during lunch). Always crowded so need to be easy to wait. Cash only. Casual but friendly service.

We visited here last night for our 49th anniversary. We have been to other NY steak houses and upscale restaurants around europe. Peter Luger has a great reputation so we decided to try it. The place was hopping last night and the people keeping track of reservations and seating were humorous and good spirits. We ordered the porterhouse for two at $119. This place only takes cash, no credit cards. But, the steak was not up the pare. The strip side, although perfectly cooked, was chewy. Very disappointing considering the reputation and cost. I am getting very tired of high-priced, below quality meals. We have been to Europe 16 times and had very expensive meals but never of low quality as last night. My feeling is that this country is over-rated in food preparation and has too many celebrity chefs who are full of themselves and not up to par.
