Review
About
Antica Pesa, The Antique Scales, is the first outpost in New York of the legendary Roman restaurant which has been owned and operated by the Panella family since 1922 in Trastevere. In 2012, the Panella family opened an outpost in Williamsburg Brooklyn, paying homage to their homeland by reworking traditional recipes from Roman cuisine and utilizing local, seasonal and mostly organic products, with a nod to modern trends.

I chose to come to L'Antica Pesa out of curiosity as I have been following Francesco Panella for years and for our wedding anniversary it seemed like the right opportunity to try his cuisine. Our younger brother Lorenzo welcomed us with great kindness and kindness in a beautiful room with soft lights and very well furnished (the place is located in Brooklyn in a very characteristic and particular area)
All the guys at the table were very kind and attentive. Excellent cuisine with very interesting typical Italian dishes. For example, I had a beetroot risotto creamed in an excellent way, then mancaroni all'amatriciana and fantastic cacio pepe, my husband also had very good and well-presented desserts. We had a really great time and Lorenzo was an excellent host. We will be back again.

I am a customer of their restaurant in Rome and obviously coming to New York I had to come and frankly it greatly exceeded my already high expectations…. Lorenzo, the great host, welcomed us as best he could, he put us completely at ease, his polite, kind and never intrusive collaborators but let's get to the most important part... the food... simply exceptional, we took two appetizers, an octopus, potatoes, olives and celery and raw and crispy buffalo cheese, cheese and pepper as a first course and tiramisu as dessert, all excellent as I already said, 5 stars!! Very pleasant evening and I will definitely go back every time I'm in these parts!!! Great Panella family!! Thanks again Lorenzo

My wife & I had the pleasure of dining with my oldest son, it's a rare occurrence because of our busy schedules. My dining choice for this evening is Antica Pesa. I love the unpretentious and inviting space, it gives off a warm vibe. What we also have are three serious diners who want a great meal. Antica Pesa delivered.
First drinks, my wife ordered a glass of Italian wine. My son & I started with cocktails. Now if I'm dining in an Italian restaurant, my family doesn't order one dish per person. Who needs to eat an entire platter of pasta? Pasta is supposed to be a starter, not a mound of all you eat pasta. We ordered Octopus and Fennel salad to start. I really wanted to try their Cacio E Pepe but my son said, dad we can make this at home. Lets order the Rigatoni All Amatriciana as well as the Octopus. The octopus, the chef made a stew with San Marzano tomatoes and was creative with crispy bread. Our minds are blown away at this point.
We also ordered for table the Fiorentina porterhouse for two. What was brought to us was a sizzling steak, Peter Luger style! The dish came with oven roasted potatoes and green beans. Not to forget the pasta, the Rigatoni All Amatriciana with Guanciale was another nice tasting note.
After we finished our incredible dinner, I was packed out but the waiter said we must try the Tiramisu, it's the chef's specialty. We also ordered the Tartelletta, made with fresh strawberries and Nutella. The Tiramisu was probably the best Tiramisu I had in my life! I had a taste of the Tartelletta, my spoon kept heading towards the Tiramisu. It was that good.
We had an incredible meal and now comes time to settle the bill. The waiter had a portable POS system that ran my charge card. I ran the change for the bill and left a cash tip. A few minutes later, the bartender came over and asked if everything was ok and why we didn't leave a tip? I pointed to the table and showed the cash I left. She apologized and left quickly. Now I'm assuming the owner came over and thanked us as well.
This small bump at the end of our experience won't take away from this meal. I highly recommend Antica Pesa.

I'm in Brooklyn for work and we decide to have dinner at Antica Pesa. (the restaurant was booked by people in the area)
I was the last one to enter, and I didn't see the welcome, as everyone was already going to the table. When I arrived, the person who accompanied us to the table did not say hello.
There are 6 of us, we are assigned a round table with seating in part with 3 chairs and 3 seats on the sofa.
Unfortunately I have to touch the sofa and it's really uncomfortable, I'm practically stuck to the table with no possibility of movement..
We order tap water, San Pellegrino, and a bottle of white wine.
They bring a microscopic slice of bread each which, when finished, remove the saucer without asking if anyone still likes it.
I order Rigatoni Amatriciana, the other people order Sea bass with vegetables, spaghetti with cheese and pepper and pork belly. (I'm the only Italian)
My pasta is very hard, but I'm not sure it's durum wheat. A little on the edge...
Other people don't comment on their dishes.
There is background music where it is difficult to understand each other but then things get complicated because they start playing piano bar music right behind us. I did not like it..
Maybe because we are in Brooklyn which is becoming a very fashionable area but I found the prices very high..
I will not return for another business dinner. Impossible to communicate.

Very bad experience.
Christmas Eve dinner booked two months in advance for €100 per person excluding drinks (more than €150 at the end of the dinner). We arrive on time and we are told that the table would not be ready for 40 minutes. Faced with our complaints, a free table suddenly appears and we are seated. Rude waiter all evening, some of the dishes terribly salty and to top it off like sweet charred panettone. Not to be repeated

I will begin by underlining that the service we received from one of the waiters (unfortunately I didn't catch his name was excellent)
The food not so.
As we visit NYC every year in Dec from Italy, this year we decided to book dinner at the Antica Pesa.
The main reason been, that my husband is Italian and as a family we watch Little big Italy very frequently.
We arrive at the restaurant, knowing NYC an rea that is trendy until early evening....
We are seated and order a fantastic Cosmopolitan my compliments to the bar man.
We are with our 5 year old daughter who eats very little and very Italian meaning
Prosciutto and Pasta with parmesan and oil.
I see that on the menu there is a plate with ham and burrata.
I kindly ask if it would be possible to have just the ham as my daughter will not eat burrata.
I would like to underline that it was logical that I had intended paying the full price for the plate as i just did not want the mozzarella on the same plate when the waiter indicated. I'm sorry but we normally cannot remove anything from the plate.
Without any discussion ( considering I have a 5 yr old) I say fine no problem bring the plate as it is.
I order Cacio e pepe, nothing compared to what I have eaten in a very normal trattoria in Rome.
My husband l'amatriciana which was ok.
Bill for what we ate been in NY was in line
Now I realise that we are italians eating in NY but especially from Francesco Panella (Mi aspettavo di piu.

My Italian family and I recently dined at Antica Pesa Brooklyn that serves amazing food. The portions of pasta were generous and the flavour were outstanding. However, we were left disappointed about the drinks section.
We ordered 3 glasses of San Giovese wine for nearly 80$, only to receive 3 small glasses of wine that the barista poured in our glasses. He didn't show us the bottle so we were unsure if we received the wine we paid for. When we raised this concern with the waiter, he offered to show us the bottle but we felt that it was too late as the wine had already been poured. Despite the outstanding meal, this experience left a sour taste in our mouths. For the price we paid and for the reputation of the restaurant, we expected better service. We didn't want or demand any discount ( we also left tips) or refund but we were disappointed that our concerns were not addressed. They should have change our glasses of wine with a new one poured in front of us or do something as an apologies but nothing happened. Overall the food was excellent but the experience was marred by the drink service. Hopefully restaurant takes steps to improve in this area.

The restaurant is located in Brooklyn in the Williamsburg neighborhood and presents itself well, with a beautiful location and style. I can't say the same for the welcome and kindness of the staff. Cold waiters, we didn't even have time to finish eating as we already had the receipt on the table. A lot of effort even to say goodbye when we left!
The food was not bad, but all overrated!

I went with my family for Christmas Eve, the thing that left me astounded was the poor service of the waiters who were not very accommodating, I don't want to lump everyone together, obviously those with whom we interfaced. As for the food, it could have been much better, but above all the dessert... A burnt Panettone. But the final surprise came with the bill, which was anything but sweet.

Really bad experience. We booked it way in advance, but when we got there they told us that they had an issue in the kitchen so the food won’t be served! They were not able to inform us upfront so we wouldn’t have to travel all the way here for nothing. Somehow the place was full and people seemed to be having dinner… On top of that the girl at the reception did not provide any alternative solution so we had to leave and look for some other place. Never coming back here. Zero gettoni Francesco.

On a recommendation from our son who has dined there several times, we went to Antica Pesa to celebrate a quiet dinner for our 40th wedding anniversary.
The owner Lorenzo was there (which I understand is the norm) and was well aware of our occasion. We were treated with the ultimate respect and kindness. You would think we eat there 3 times a week. In fact, we believed THEY were truly honored and flattered that we chose their place to celebrate our special anniversary.
We typically go to our favorite restaurants any other days than Friday and Saturday. I would imagine they get extremely busy on weekends. I am not saying to avoid them on weekends, but the staff will have more time to give the treatment they love to do on a different night. Every person we encountered had that attitude. They LOVE what they do.
The chef is an artist. You can see him at the pass delicately assembling the dishes and putting the finishing touches on every plate.
The menu changes 4 times a year, so in essence, everything is a special. Next time, we will go with a group of four or more, and will let Lorenzo choose the dishes and create a tasting dinner, highlighting the best of what they do.
The price was half of what a comparable meal would cost in Manhattan. We don't live in Brooklyn. It was worth driving there for the experience. We will most certainly return.

Definitely a 5 star experience! Our group of 22 were greeted at the door by Lorenzo Panella. His energy introduced him. His sense of pride and passion set the tone for our delightful evening. I have come to not expect Italian restaurants in the US to rival the overall flavor, freshness and hospitality of Italy. Our experience was nothing but exceptional! The team of Antics Pesa was energetic, authentic and a tireless aura that drew each and every one our group in. If you only have one evening in NYC, this is your place. From Antipasti, Primi, secondi or dolce will delight. Thank you Lorenzo, we will be back.

Antica Pesa received us with an extraordinary disposition, made us feel and treated us, as if we were family! It was our first time visiting and our daughter wanted us to experience what she felt and why Antica Pesa has become her Favorite Italian Restaurant in Brooklyn, New York!
The attention to every detail is within everyone who works there. They know and they love what they do. Excellent options in the menu, very fresh pasta, great selection of wine . For me, one of the best tiramisu and almond ice cream I’ve ever tried.
We enjoyed live music, ( thursday) in perfect volume, which allowed us to enjoy as-well, our conversation. Lovely Evening!

The space is elegant and their cacio e pepe spaghetti it’s not bad. That’s what they get the 1 star for. Is it worth it tho? The overall experience we had makes you wonder how they are still in business. We received sub par service as it appears to be a common trend on the recent reviews. This was a special occasion and it made us feel like we were in the wrong to speak up about mistakes with the order(brought the wrong entree to a guest), poorly executed dishes(answered with, no it was well done because another guest liked it 😂) the server took away a half full glass from our table and had an attitude when our guest mentioned it. Overall there was no attempt to rectify the situation from the owner and staff, only excuses. When we asked for recommendations the waiter didn’t really have any saying he hadn’t tried many of the dish and was rather impersonal. We asked for a wine within a price range and when we got the check the price was higher. Not something you would expect from an authentic upscale italian restaurant in New York City.
End of the story-you go there because of their good reputation but get slapped in the face instead.

Hi Caterina - thank you for your feedback. We have listened to the reviewers regarding service and the particular server who has been responsible for poor service and attitude is no longer an employee of ours. It is extremely important to us that our guests feel welcomed and happy with their experience so we believe this change will surely improve the outcome. We do hope you try us again so we can better show you what we are capable of! Grazie

Came here with my husband for a date night and was blown away. The food is so fresh and absolutely delicious. The service is impeccable and the ambiance is romantic and cool. The owner, Lorenzo, made menu recommendations and he curated the perfect symphony of their signature dishes. Will definitely be back. Grazie Lorenzo!
