Great atmosphere, good service, food was mediocre , at best. Chicken was mostly dark meat, greasy , no flavor and lots of fried stuff on top. I had to trade my pop pie to my wife for the chicken because she did not like the chicken. Pop pie was really good. Don't order the Parker bread, way below average, honey butter was not good. Did not order the steak- way too many great steak houses in the city. For the price they charged I won't go back- too bad, I really liked the vibe and the service. My wife only eats white meat for chicken. We asked if we could trade out the leg, wing and thigh for a piece of white meat. The waiter said a lot pf people make the same request and the management says NO.I don't blame the waiter, I do blame management- what are they thinking????? For the cost to change versus the bad taste in a customers mouth is why restaurants go away- we even offered to pay and they said no. Owners wonder why they fail?: Common sense is not very common...

Very good experience in this historic restaurant. Took friends for dinner and the food was delicious. Traditional classic steakhouse, large room with dark wood panels and old fashioned mirrors has lots of character. New York strip and whole fish were just mouthwatering delicious. Appetiser of chicken pate was very well prepared too. Service was prompt and attentive. Enjoyed the dinner very much. The only reason to give 4 and not 5 stars was that they had only regular coffee that evening. Excellent place for groups of friends, couples and special occasions.

I previously rated the best lace much higher but thus tine trip found fatty snd undecided poked pork chop and veal chop. for those prices it was poor . The only redeeming factor were excellent happy hour benga on seafood and drinks. The hash browns remained terrific but baked Alaska was limp and basically full of cream with a bit of ice cream. Our friends dud but care fur the she crab soup either. Service was good but poor food prep and cooking made this a poor experience. I am greatly disappointed in them and expected much better.

The service and staff were commendable; however, the food was excessively salty. The steak did not meet expectations, and the fish was also overly salty, leading us to only take a few bites. Additionally, the dessert had an unexpected salty flavor, which was puzzling. Unfortunately, this negatively impacted my partner's birthday celebration.

We had an excellent meal here right after it opened, but a return meal was a total catastrophe. Service was cool, disinterested, and disengaged, and most seriously of all, the cooking was sloppy, served in stingy portions and lacking in flavor, taste and originality. Clams Casino came with an over darkened crust of bread crumbs and were chewy without being succulent because overcooked. The size of the shrimp int he shrimp cocktail has diminished, too, and food throughout or meal was overcooked but still arrived at the table lukewarm, including a veal chop ordered pink, which came cooked white, fried chicken that had stayed in the fryer too long, and a sea bass that was boring for lacking a sauce. Prices here are sky high, too, which makes this restaurant very very poor value for the money. We will not go back.

We went here with another couple a few days before New Year's eve. We were excited to go due to all the good press we had read about the restaurant. We started with drinks upstairs at the bar- expensive but cool atmosphere and great drinks. Fir the restaurant, service was ok, atmosphere is good. Table seemed too simple for the price (no tablecloth, average dishes, silverware not changed after appetizer). Food was just average and not in line with the price. Steak goes by weight and cost $145 and had too much garlic on it. The best part was the fresh bread and dessert. It's not a restaurant we would return to.

This place has been closed many years but has been reopened and food is awesome. Service is adequate but the food made it up. The original oysters were delicious and other types are available. However the veal shank is only available at night but the pork pot pie was a worthy substitute. Parking lots are nearby but expensive do consider public transportation. I will return fir the veal at night sometimes soon

Gage & Tollner is a very pleasant restaurant. The decor is gorgeous, the vibe is old worldly. The menu is quite extensive. We had the parker house rolls, hash browns, mushrooms, shared a 12 oz striploin, a cheese plate, some cava to start & a bottle of pinot noir, The parker house rolls were devoured in seconds. The stripling was not a particularly tender cut. We are perplexed as to why G & T do not offer small cuts of meat if only one person at the table wants red meat. The T-bone & the bone rib eye are only available in the 32 to 36 oz range. These must be shared by 2 or 3 people. Service by Teddy was knowledgeable, kind & accommodating. He gets top marks. The sommelier was helpful. And don't get me wrong, we had an enjoyable night. What they do is solid. It just didn't hit it out of the park for us.

Had a reservation here for early dinner (5:15) on a SAT. Waiter Brian was great. Let me start by saying their prices are quite high. Examples: $21 for a bowl of watery she crab soup with a teaspoon or two of crab (we live in SC and know our she crab soup well). The T-bone steaks were $4.65 per oz - a 28 oz steak was $130.20, of which at least 6 oz was bone. $20 for a martini. Total bill for 4 before tip: $486. I suspect the restaurant owners are doing quite well at these prices.

My girlfriend and I arrived for our 5:15 reservation on a Wednesday. We were warmly greeted at the front door and promptly seated. Our server, Alexandra, introduced herself and helped us with our drink selections. My girlfriend ordered a Pink Lady; I ordered a Sidecar. Both were excellent. We each had a cup of she-crab soup, which was surprisingly light but delicious. Each was accompanied by a small vessel of sherry, which we were free to pour in however much we cared. We started off lightly, then added more as we finished the soup. Tasty, tasty stuff. We also ordered a small plate called "Devils On Horseback": bacon wrapped dates stuffed with a smoked almond. There were only 6 served; a bit pricy for the quantity, but O.M.G. the quality was out of this world. Still, I wish a couple more could have graced our plate. But that's just greed on my part... For dinner, I ordered the Golden Tilefish, which was served with collard greens, cabbage, and braised pork belly. When the plate was set down in front of me, Alexandra poured the most delicious pork broth around the plate to accentuate all of the flavors. Beautiful presentation, and one of the most memorable plates of food I've ever had. My girlfriend ordered Roasted Chicken Breast, which was served with mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. She let me sample some of it, and I can attest that this is the way all chicken breasts should be served: flavorful, tender, and juicy. Alexandra had also presented us with a complimentary glass of white wine (I forget the variety, but I think it was a chablis. It was very good). For dessert, we took a light route. Janet ordered a fresh mint ice cream, and I ordered a rhubarb ginger sorbet. Both were excellent finishes for a great meal. Would we return? In a heartbeat! It'll be part of our itinerary during our next trip to New York City!!

We came here after going to Sunken Harbor upstairs. They were so kind and accommodated us with a table despite the fact that they were busy. We weren’t too sure what to expect of the food and drinks, however, we were hungry and it was convenient. All of us ended up being so glad we tried the food as it was soooo good!! Everything was well flavored and the food was fresh. They also had a variety of options for vegetarians. The dessert was also very good. Ambiance: The ambiance feels very much like a Brooklyn upscale restaurant. We sat by the window and it was a perfect seat to people watch. Service: All the wait staff were kind and friendly. We ended up being one of the last ones there and they never made us feel rushed.

This was our first time here. The service was attentive, unobtrusive and the waitstaff were cheerful. I started with a very tasty Caeser salad and then had the soft-shell crab sandwich which was served with an interesting, multi-layers of different flavors sauce. One of our party started with the mushroom appetizer which was grand, a large portion of tasty mushrooms. One of our party had the Pork Pot Pie a really large serving. I had been thinking of the ribeye but the smallest one they had was 27 ounces so at 4.25 an ounce we were looking at 110 bucks plus. Mind, this is in range with great NY steakhouses but we had not come prepared to take portions back on the long drive, so I gave it a miss. I want to come back here and try their steaks but either come prepared to take some to much back with us or see if they would serve one cut for two or four people; I know that I could not have a 27 ounce steak on my own. We will be back, it is wonderfully restored and bustling, a real NY steakhouse.

It will take a while to get a reservation but it's worth it. We visited G&T on a Wednesday evening a four top, our reservation was at 6 PM. We arrived first ahead of our son and DIL. The place was really buzzing and probably 90% full. We were shown to a table in the middle of the restaurant but requested a booth against a wall and were accommodated. We started with drinks which were expertly prepared. Starters included gougeres ($8), a bit bready and too large; Hen of the Woods Mushrooms ($17), OK but a bit too much batter on the fried mushrooms; fluke crudo ($21), just excellent, they managed to get the leche de tigre (sp?) just perfectly balanced and the portion large; and a selection of east coast oysters ($46), expertly shucked and clean as a whistle, pronounced excellent by son. For wine we asked to see the somm and he suggested a white Sancerre ($82), a perfectly balanced wine. For entrees we had grilled yellowtail ($42) cooked as requested (still swimming); crab cake ($28) very good; fried chicken ($30) juicy and crisp; honeynut squash($28) not tasted by me. It was accompanied by a Sancerre Vacheron red ($92), again perfectly balanced. Quite full we only ordered a single desert chevre cheesecake ($14) very good. Ended it all with after dinner drinks. Overall a very good-excellent meal! Service was totally spot on, attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant is very attractive, a blast from the past. The noise level is high and when making reservations request a booth. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit or two.

We were visiting my son and his partner in Brooklyn. First time back in NY since the pandemic. Also we had a birthday and anniversary between us. We had read good things about G &T. Even though we booked the table over a month in advance, we waited more than 30 minutes to be seated. There is no bar seating so we were standing in a crowd of other waiting patrons. When we arrived at our table, it was clear our waiter was checked out. The service was lackluster and he didn’t pretend to care about our dinning experience. The cocktails were mediocre. I gave my vodka martini to my son as it wasn’t prepared “dirty” as requested and had too much vermouth. We ordered oysters and shrimp for appetizers. The shellfish was small and unimpressive. The restaurant was out of the two cuts of steaks my guests wanted. They compromised but two of my party had to send back their steaks as they were completely raw. The steaks came back chewy and mediocre. I ordered the skate fish which was also chewy and mediocre. We had told the restaurant and the waiter that we were celebrating 2 occasions. We received no free dessert and not even a candle in the baked Alaska. All in all this was perhaps the worst pricey meal we’ve ever had in NY. Don’t go!! .

Recently reopened, the four of us had an outstanding evening. The decor reflects the original time when this was first opened. The staff was attentive and helpful. We cocktails were well made. We enjoyed a variety of appetizers including Fluke Crudo and mushrooms. The sommelier provided excellent advice on the French wines that were unfamiliar leading to two superb complimentary wines. The steak was priced per ounce, with different sizes available. We could choose one large enough for two of us to share. One couple had the whole roasted fish, exquisitely prepared. Highly recommend trying this newly reopened restaurant.
