This is coming from a lifelong NY'er who's been patronizing Katz's for 50+ years. Off and on. It's a love/hate relationship, lol. Advice to tourists: it is among the best Jewish delis in NY, not that it has all that much competition anymore. But seek...and ye shall find, It is steeped in atmosphere, And cheesiness including a crazy ticket system, celebrity photos and surly sandwich cutters. But everyone should go there once if the prices don't turn you off - $20+ for a sandwich. However, it is not the only Jewish deli in NY with great deli. Do a search. Or send me a message. I relocated 2 years ago to a country that is like a food desert. I dreamed of pastrami. When I returned just recently, I decided to play the tourist I now am and visited Katz's. I was prepared for the $25 price for a pastrami sandwich and they don't hide it (nor have any shame). That's not my beef. It's the sandwich cutters. I always hated that you had to tip them if you wanted to get out of there alive. That's why I mostly stopped going there. But the $1 tip is now $5! I was incredulous. $30 for a pastrami sandwich. There are no signs about the hidden rules for tipping sandwich cutters. In the old days, they were very aggressive about it. I wasn't 100% sure of the $5 - I was going by the huge tip bowl filled mostly with 5's. But there were a bunch of 1's also. I couldn't bring myself to leave $5 and left $2 hoping that would be enough. In hindsight, I should have just flat out asked the cutter, Instead, I got a thickly cut gross sandwich. Honestly, someone should sue them for not disclosing the tipping policy. I'll never set foot in there again, $27 and I couldn't get a decent sandwich. Not for nothing, but Russ & Daughters is a block away carries many of the same items. And Yona Shimmel Knishery is nearby also and has better knishes. And they both seem like they care about your business and don't have a tip jar. And there's plenty of other delis with comparable food and don't try to shake you down. But it's a real trip if you don't mind the price - ONE TIMEMore

We didn't know the rules for paying. (Take all pink tickets to payment area, pay, keep receipt, keep pink ticket to turn in when you leave.) After receiving drinks at the grill/drink space, I asked how to pay. Server said "If you have cash, pay...here ... for card go there." So I handed him a $20, which he put in his tip jar. I figured out something was wrong and said "no, I already tipped you. I'll tip more but that's my payment. Give me back $5." So he did. Long story short, to not ruin a visit to beloved family in New York, I paid for drinks a second timewhen it was demanded by hostess at door - who heard story and curtly advised me to go back to drink/grill counter and talk to the server who scammed me. And ... the corned beef was tough and lacking in flavor. Sic transit gloria Katz's. I expect this kind of stuff from grifters on the street, not from Katz' deli.More

I was really excited to receive an online order from New York's premier deli. But something was wrong. The corned beef I received had absolutely no taste! And it was VERY expensive. Don't know what went wrong. Perhaps it is the packing of the product...which arrives frozen?More

This is what we got with online order of Pastrami???? And their email response: Hello, Thank you for your order with Katz's Delicatessen! Please be advised all of our sliced meats are hand-carved that and we cannot specify cuts, so we cannot guarantee that you...will receive thinly sliced meat. Our lean pastrami is less fatty not thinly sliced. Best, FidelMore

Went twice while in NYC recently. Had the corned beef both times and it was wonderful. A real NY institution. Not too many delis have survived and I'm very happy they have. Be aware that the portion size is huge.

Katz's deli needs a fresh review for 2021. I'm going to bring back some sliced meat for my wife. I'm given a ticket and I stand on line with 6 feet of separation. Once the counter person says next, I ordered my sliced pastrami to...go. While the butcher was slicing, he gave me a plate with 3 pieces of sliced pastrami. I'm in total heaven at this point. I'm here, lemme have some matzoh ball soup before heading back to the burbs. The butcher gives me a generous pour of their famous soup. I grab a can of Dr Browns Black Cherry Soda and I head towards a table. This kid from Brooklyn is loving this simple yet flavorful meal. Yes, the Matzoh ball is like lead and sank like a rock to the bottom of the bowl. The broth is brown, very very seductive. Mmm.... I don't come here often but when I do? It's fun to see the wall of celebrities enjoying Katz's deli. Their pastrami alone is worth the wait. Katz's deli is New York institution and highly recommend.More

I’ve seen so many things about Katz’s so I was really glad to finally get to check it out. I ordered for delivery and I ordered WAY too much food. The portions are amazing for the price. I ordered the half sandwich with soup combo...and got matzo ball soup with a brisket sandwich. Both amazing. (I even got a second meal out of the “half sandwich” it was so big!). I also ordered latkes (because I’m a sucker for latkes) and it was 3 HUGE latkes so I also got a second meal from them. They did mess up my order and forgot the cookie I ordered but I got so much food out of what I did get that I didn’t even mind. I’d love to try some of their other options and I can’t wait to take my family when they come and visit!More
