Fun place to go for a good meal. The menu is a bit limited in choices and most are a bit spicy. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The interior is quite cool so take in a sweater or light jacket.

Its crazy I was living in Nola a year an walking into this restaurants I feel like I'm back in New Orleans . I Just wanted to let you know what a great experience we that tonight! I had reservations and was seated immediately. Server...was knowledgeable ,prompt and friendly. Started the meal off with oysters that were so delicious. I had gumbo so good, main dishes from shrimp and grits to catfish to a po' boy. to a T. Thank you for a memorable evening looking forward to coming back soon. Would definitely recommend a try if your in Milwaukee.More
Had not been here for quite some time...we sat the bar...service was perfect...but the food...ordered 1 thing...Jambalaya... I usually photograph food...but this looks like some red rice with a couple cans of stewed tomatoes spilled on the top. We split it and had about 3...coups of rice (they were kind to split the dish for us...as I said the service was great) 4 shrimp, some sausage (awesome) and bits of chicken...but it was mushy, lacked flavor, and was poorly presented. I took off most of the tomatoes...they asked how it was...I said not good...poor excuse for jambalaya.More
Everyone has a short list of restaurants to revisit in 2021. Heading back to Maxie's was a must to get some Happy Hour oysters and gumbo. We stayed for dinner and ordered catfish, trout, fried chicken, and shrimp and grits. All of the dishes were...terrific, but two of our entrees arrived lukewarm. The staff cheerfully went out of their way to make certain that everything was corrected to our complete satisfaction. In these challenging times for restaurants, that level of customer care is very welcome and worth mentioning.More
We were SO excited about the Derby and Maxie's Derby menu, especially shrimp and grits. Made plans for takeout two weeks ahead. Ordered, received on-time, got everything ready--noticed there were tomatoes in the shrimp and grits gravy, which is not at all traditional, but I...like tomatoes, so whatever. I excitedly took at bite--and it was so unbelievably hot (spicy) it burned my throat. Ate one of the shrimp thinking underneath the shell it wouldn't be as spicy--still the overpowering heat. Figured it was the gravy, and tried the grits on the side...the grits were hot! First of all this is NOT how shrimp and grits is supposed to be--and we would know, we have family in New Orleans. The tasso-ham gravy (sans tomato) provides subtle layers of flavor that are nuanced--not overly spicy. Secondly the grits themselves should never ever be hot--obviously if a person wants to ADD hot sauce they can, but why make a dish that not only isn't authentic, for us it was INEDIBLE. I literally couldn't taste anything and every bite burned. Thank god for the cornbread and a glass of milk. P.S. The peanut butter pie was to die for (in a good way). I did call a week or so later and talked to a manager, because I love Maxie's and it really bothered me. He said they'd take it off the bill, which made no sense since it was long paid for...didn't even ask for my name, so I gave it to him.More
Thanks again for visiting Maxie's and for contacting us directly with your feedback. We're very sorry to hear you found your Shrimp & Grits to be too spicy. We have confirmed that our recipes are being prepared correctly, and had no other complaints. We do...More
This was my first time and I had to have it curbside to go due to the virus. Wow... it is AMAZING!! Thank you for everything. The food was great, and you made our cancelled 30th birthday trip for my daughter an excellent plan B!...I can't wait until I can come back and enjoy the actual atmosphere and more of the menu. 5 stars and a huge thank you to everyone. You are awesome.More
The atmosphere is bustling, crowded, and noisy. Good luck if you're seated next to a family with toddlers. Our server was friendly, informative and efficient, but my wife's ordered was prepared incorrectly and my Frogmore Stew should have been served at a higher temperature. The...food was very tasty and we enjoyed our meals. Fortunately, we were paying our check just as the party of 18 was being seated right next to our table. We'll come back again, but maybe not on a Saturday night.More
We usually go here once a year. I would say it was better 3years ago. The wings were the best part. Ribs have been better. Pork cheeks were good but the juice to vinegary. Maybe just winds next time.More
We're sorry to hear your most recent visit was not up to our high standards. Thank you for telling us exactly what you had, so that we can make sure we're serving all our dishes correctly. We'd like to know more about your visit and...More
Love Maxie's for their down home Southern comfort food when we just don't have the time to take a drip back down to the Smoky Mountains!!! Fried Crawfish, fresh cornbread, Shrimp and Grits, brisket, pulled pork, jambalya.... you simply can't go wrong with anything on...Maxie's menu!!! A favorite spot for me and my wife for a Valentine's day weekend date night and also a great spot to gather with friends to watch the Kentucky Derby and get a tasty Mint Julep! Get on the Yelp! App so you can get in on the seating ahead of time, as they don't normally take reservations.More
For many years, my friends and I would go to Maxies happy hour: A dozen oysters for $12, $2 off drinks, and some less expensive appetizers. Returned recently, and it seemed like the quality has gone down. Went upstairs, and sat at the bar. The...bartender was extremely slow, and seemed to have a hard time mixing drinks ( there were 4 people at the bar). I requested a martini, and she made it in a small old fashioned champagne glass ($9.50 after discount). Should have been served in a cold martini glass. She didn’t clear away our empty plates or glasses, and spend most of her time chatting with her friends at the bar. Fried green tomatoes came with a small amount of roumolade, and shrimp were overcooked. Loved that place in the past: generous with drinks and good food. This visit, no so much. Probably won’t go back....More
We're very sorry to hear you did not have an excellent experience on your recent visit. Your bartender should have been prompt, and easily mixed your drinks (we have served our martinis in classic cocktail coupes that hold the same volume as our old martini...More
First time eating raw oysters! They were great. Sever was bright. Friendly and very helpful. We'd go back to try more oysters and different entrees. Close parking lot. Easy to find. Didn't need a reservation.🍴🍴🍴. Good food 👍
I want to like this place but it just never rises to expectations. The food was acceptable, the drinks were okay, and the restaurant is really loud. We sat in the upstairs area and it seems like all the noise from downstairs converges with the...noise upstairs making conversation difficult at best. Our server was friendly and helpful when he was there, but wasn't very attentive. May have been understaffed, not sure. I'll go back, but only because that's what my friends might choose.More
We're very sorry to hear your food and drinks were just okay, because you should rightfully expect an excellent dining experience at Maxie's. We'd like to know more about your visit, including what you had and who served you, and to invite you back. Please...More
Visited before 6pm and it was Happy Hour which included discounted drinks and $1.00 PEI Oysters. We had a nice table which helped accommodate our Service Animals. We ordered 2 dozen oysters and they were shucked and delicious. We also had the Shrimp and Grits...that was flavorful and we had a bowl of soup and their Mac n Cheese side dish as an entree. It was all very good and the service was friendly and efficient. Of course we will be back!!More
Seven of us went here for birthday celebrations. Three had chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and bean veggies and everything was cold. Two had ribs and Mac and cheese and one had jambalaya and they said it was all good as were the raw...oysters. Beer was warm but mixed drinks were good. Took quite a while to get our food. Server was nice and accommodating. High priced for the quality and quantity of food. Music too loud so couldn't hear each other talk. Not impressed with Maxie's but others sure seem to like it so maybe we just got a not so good cook?More
I had the chicken fried chicken and it was wonderful. My wife had the flounder and we shared a crab cake as well. They also have a decent tap beer list and the cocktails looked great (my wife had 2 mojitos and loved them). Would...highly recommend!More
