With limited opening hours, you can only go there for lunch in winter. Prices are rather high for a seaside fast food. Oysters are yummy, small and fat. They also have baby abalone, which they call abaloni, good but not as interesting as the abalone....Rather expensive again for a fast food. Not sure it is worth it.More

We did the tour and can thoroughly recommend for some history and local knowledge. Neither of us are raw oyster eaters and still it was worthwhile.

Expensive for tourist. Dishes were ok, but expensive for the venue. Market price oysters. Tourist $31 a doz, locals 5 mins later pay $24/doz.

Arrived at American Bay looking forward to some oysters only to be told they were out of season until next month. Nowhere in the information provided about the island does it tell one there is a season for oysters grown on the island. We desired...to have the grilled whiting instead as we were quite hungry after a long drive and ferry ride from the mainland. They do not cook any chips so we waited with great anticipation what our $70 lunch for 2 would be like. It consisted of 2 small fillets each sitting on top of a ciabatta for my partner and a coleslaw salad for myself in small, cardboard boxes. This was how it was presented for a sit down meal. Yes the fish was lovely but $70 - what a welcome to the island!! We felt so ripped off. Thankfully we did find a good seafood supplier in Kingscote later in the day and cooked for ourselves a delightful meal that night.More

W e drove like mad to get here because they close so EARLY. 3.00pm. And the road to American River is a little undulating. On arrival you are inspired by the view. We made it just in time and the young lady who served us...was so helpful and friendly and knowledgeable about the seafood offerings. We bought a dozen fresh oysters At $24 a dozen which we thought a little high considering the small size of these Pacific oysters but they were sweet and very fresh. We also bought some small farmed abalone which they call abalonni or such for $20 a bag of 15 or so. We also bough a small bag of smoked "Tommy Rough", think herring. The oysters were delicious as stated. At home the Tommy Rough was also great with a buttered sourdough loaf . And later after some serious cleaning from the shell of the farmed baby abalone. They are tough. So slice thinly and some tenderised with meat hammer, and cooked with a little garlic, butter and olive oil for a minute at relatively high heat was SO delicious that I can hardly keep the flavour out of my taste buds. But the cleaning is not for the unseasoned fisher folk. But the taste is STILL haunting me!! YUM!!More

No white linen table cloths or candelabras, but good food, and there’s no need to dress up. The seafood platter for four was great value with a variety of seafood delicacies and plenty of it. A definite stop for lunch or to pick up some...oysters to take home, also very reasonably priced.More

The Oyster Shop wasn't what we expected. Staff was friendly, but the selection of seafood was limited. Prawns were frozen and expensive. We bought oysters to take away, which were very tasty.

No oysters and overpriced other food. Slow to serve cooked food. You’d think there’ll be a big sign outside saying sorry there are no oysters because they are supposedly out of season yet they advertise there are daily shuckings.

Unfortunately the day that we went to the Oysters Shop the oysters were out of season so maybe we would have had a better experience if they had been available. The staff were fairly friendly. We ordered the double prawn cone for $32 and a...Abalini large for approx $20 to share between 4 adults. The prawns consisted of 12 soft and tasteless prawns. There were 12 abolini and they were was tough and nothing to write home about. For the price of the meal it was extremely disappointing. All the other food and service we experienced on the island was outstanding.More
