We were promptly served with my glass of prosecco, and tap water as requested, but after 15 minutes hadn’t been given any menus. I went to ask, and then we were brought one main menu, and one dessert menu! Very strange. Eventually we both had the a la carte menu, but no wine list! Again I went to ask. After an hour we were given our canapés. That is quite a long wait, perhaps the kitchen was over stretched. The amuse bouchée was really weird, and did not amuse at all. It was a bowl of hot stock with a table spoon of spelt in the bottom. What were you thinking of, Gary? It would have been a treat in a POW camp, but not in a restaurant like this. The first courses were far too large, my husband’s cod would have been a meal in itself, and had I eaten my bao bun I would have been too full for anything else. Inexplicably crab and bun were served on a small stone. The Welsh wagyu beef and the Argentinian Malbec were excellent, however sadly this did not rescue the evening.

They were fully booked but we had a short notice cancellation so we thought we were lucky. All started well with a parking space close to the venue. We had our temperature taken when we entered and there was plenty of distance between the tables so it looked good. We were seated by a friendly waitress. Service wasn't rapid but OK. I was told that there was a change to the menu and the one I really wanted was off the menu, the turbot and it had been replaced with halibut. I found this surprising as they usually serve fresh locally caught fish and halibut is a northern fish, brill, sole or even bream would have been fine. I ordered a half bottle of wine as I was driving and my wife wouldn't need a whole bottle. I was surprised when we were presented with half a bottle of wine in a full size bottle, already open, strange as I've eaten in many good restaurants and a half bottle has always been served in a half size bottle, unopened. I started with tartare of mackerel, I'd not had this before so was experimenting, it was OK, followed by the halibut. It wasn't very hot but I thought this may have been because the service wasn't that swift and it could have been cooling on the side in the kitchen. My wife had the duck breast for starters, some was warm and some was cold. My wife had the lamb for mains but although it was tender, it wasn't that hot either. My halibut arrived covered with mange tout, again this wasn't that hot but I was looking forward to the halibut but was disappointed as this also was only warm and as I tucked in I found that the fish was clear near the bone, raw. We decided not to have a dessert but had a coffee which was perfect, strong and piping hot, a shame the rest of the meal wasn't as good. I have no explanation as to why our food was warm at best, I thought about it and came up with 3 possible answers. I. The chef previously worked in a Sushi restaurant. 2. He/she had been told not to make the food too hot in case someone burned their mouth and sued them. 3. The slow service allowed the food to cool in the kitchen but this wasn't the reason as my fish would have been completely cooked, even if cool. Not a cheap meal, about the same as dinner at the Ritz but lacking the service and perfection. I think we'll stick to Prezzo and the Shalimar in future. Very disappointing to say the least as we'd heard so much good about it when I lived in Emsworth but I've since been told it had changed hands, perhaps they need a bit of experience or a new chef.

We have eaten at 36 on the Quay for nigh on 20 years. It is now under new management so I am not surprised that the style of cooking has changed. If the standard is as high as it was for the 10 course taster menu served up on New Year’s Eve, then 36 on the Quay is going to go from strength to strength and my wife and I will look forward to returning soon.

We came here for a birthday celebration. This had been recommended by a friend and we had tried to get in several previous birthdays but not been able to do so.
The general decor and ambiance was quiet and serene, in keeping with the price tag. We have been lucky enough to have several previous taster-menu experiences, with wine flights, in other restaurants and had been delighted by them all. Sadly, this experience fell a long way short.
We started with canapés. One (cod with black pudding) was fine. The other was a leek, with a barbecue sauce. The taste was nothing special, but the texture unpalatable; it was very tough and after chewing for several minutes it simply would not break down. While I was still chewing, the waitress came and cleared the plates, without asking how it was, and left me still chewing, and returned with the next canapé. I was still chewing at that point, and (despite feeling extremely embarrassed to have to be so impolite) was forced to spit it out, and put it on the side of the new plate of food! When she returned she neither asked about that course, nor commented on that. The next canapé was neither pleasant nor unpleasant, but very spicy, which is unusual at this point in a meal.
There followed some tasty mackerel tartare in a bland (or were our tastebuds just cauterised from the last course?) kind of tomato water, with fresh cherry tomatoes. Not horrible but not interesting either. That was the only course I actually finished. Everything else just wasn’t very nice. Some things neither looked nor tasted great, for example a bowl of finely sliced pastrami with finely sliced apple and a kind of sauce which frankly resembled vomit. Nothing else was inedible but nor was it delicious. The wine paired didn’t clash, but it wasn’t the joyful marriage we had experienced elsewhere. The wine was plentiful, I will say that, certainly was not able to finish all of it.
As each course was cleared unfinished, only once was an inquiry was made as to our enjoyment. When we did give the negative feedback, this was just accepted with a nod and that this would be passed on, at no point did the waiting staff appear concerned that we were not enjoying it, or offer any kind of compensation.
This is a very expensive place and not only is not worth it, I would have been dissapointed in this meal had it been a budget option. Just don’t go here.

I was so looking forward to the taster menu hoping for a quality restaurant experience that was a level above the gastro pubs in the surrounding area. On first sight , white linen, tasteful decor, silver cutlery were hopeful signs. However never judge a restaurant by its presentation and marketing promotion, my mistake. The food was poor. Not a single dish stood out for praise. Execution was haphazard. Just a few examples; the amuse bouche parcel of my guest was served split open the tuna tartare was full of sinew rather than carefully diced, the scallop was totally overpowered by garlic that the the mouth felt it had been burnt by garlic. Langoustine Sweet and Sour would't last 2 weeks on a Chinese cafe takeaway menu. More care could have been taken over the cooking of the meat dishes and the presentation was rather one dimensional.
Wine list rather short and lacking in depth. Playing of muzak intermittently was rather annoying not least when it changed from smooth pop to dance to something else. Fortunately the volume was kept down albeit still intrusive.
Service was functional and smooth without being engaging.
The annoyance comes at the end when the bill as expected with service is £200 for two for food you would not wish to revisit.

We called at 36 the quay today to book an overnight stay and meal for an upcoming stay, Fortunately for us the place was closed but their 36 quay street food was open so we decided to have lunch. The smell from the hut was an appalling fried food smell. We decided to order despite this, I ordered crab, mango and sweet chilli bagel and my husband had the chicken Caesar wrap. We ordered coffee but we’re advised that the machine was broken so we could have coke or water or tea. We gave that a miss. When the food arrived some 20 minutes later we were rather dismayed. My crab, mango and sweet chilli bagel, was curried crab paste with no mango and lots of chilli sauce on a stale brioch bun. My husbands chicken Caesar wrap was a piece of deep fried chicken with a deep fried potato rösti and some Mayo…we came away smelling of deep fried everything. The notice board advertised Vegan, Vegetarian and gluten free food and then stated ‘ all of our food is deep fried in the same fryer, so we can’t guarantee Vegan, Vegetarian or gluten free…..given the burgers, chicken, Rosti’s and falafel were all cooked in the same fryer, I can rest assure people that your food would not be vegan….if this is the best a top restaurant can do as a take away then I doubt it can do better in the restaurant as others have stated. If you don’t have mango, bagels etc then don’t advertise that you do.

We visited here to eat in the restaurant and stay in the upstairs rooms on our anniversary. Firstly, the restaurant is in a stunning location, on the quay overlooking the bay.
We had the tasting menu with matching wines. Overall, it was a great experience. The food was very good from start to finish - highlights were the ‘Tomato, Crab and Bergamot’ and the ‘Orkney, Scallop and Elderflower’. We had a wonderful evening and finished it off with a walk around the harbour.
The room (we stayed in the Nutmeg Room) was clean and simply decorated - you have a great view of the bay with a window seat. Because of Covid, they served continental breakfast on a tray to the room, which we ate on the sun terrace next to our room that overlooked the quay. Overall a great stay!

We have visited 36 several, many many times, over a long period of time. The overall experience has usually been good or very good. This time it was close to poor. The amuse bouche were very salty and too large pieces of cured mackerel. That was served with a cone with very soft and almost tasteless tarama. We asked for additional plates of vegetables for the table ( which we would pay for) and were told a) it could be done and b) there were plenty of vegetables served with the main plates. I don't believe a) and b) certainly was not correct. Plus that is not how to respond to diners. The fish dish was covered with a thick and inedible layer of maybe fused bread crumbs. It made the entire dish unpalatable. There were four of us and each dish was seriously under seasoned. I'm really sorry to write this report. Usually one can find some positives to balance the disappointments. None were to be found. What has happened to the kitchen isn't clear, but presumably on a Friday evening the A team was in the kitchen. More attention to the main dishes and zero amuse bouche and between course mini offerings may help focus on what matters. Hopefully things will improve again. The menu choices in terms of proteins were very strange and there was zero for a vegetable loving diner.

I have to say first and foremost, that this review is for the Food truck outside, and in all honesty, I think it should be treated as a separate entity to £6 Restaurant, maybe I should add it as a stand alone
I love street food, and have eaten it all over the world, it usually signifies good food, served quickly, for a reasonable cost. If only..
I had seen this for a while, and while walking around decided that a snack was in order. Firstly, quite a wait as everything is cooked to order. I asked about what I was going to order (sweet and sour chicken) and placed an order of that for myself, and some Garlic fries for my wife.
Ok, we waited, and I was then given the wrong food, for which the man behind the counter apologised. My wife got her (expensive) fries while mine was being remade. Unfortunately the garlic started to turn the mayo green, and while the fries were crisp and tasty, I thought overpriced for what they were.
When I got mine, a smallish portion for the price, the rice was undercooked, the chicken overcooked, and there was a splash of sweet chilli sauce, not sweet and sour. Like other reviews I have read about this food truck, a lot went in the bin.
This is not a food truck, a food truck has fresh ingredients, cooked as required, this is processed food, reheated, with little care or attention.
Sorry, I really wanted it to be so much more..

I can’t remember the last time l have been this utterly disappointed with a meal out. I actually didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I have wanted to eat in this restaurant for years and with a special occasion to celebrate l thought l had the perfect reason to visit. We ordered the Taster menu and it was not to my liking at all. One of the courses was a diced raw scallop on cold raspberry purée, no taste at all apart from raspberry smoothie, a raw mackerel fillet with grated watery apple over the top and a tasteless sweet sauce, a diced ‘frankfurter’ sausage with mushroom and cheese over the top and the dessert was just like something you’d expect if you ordered a toffee sundae in a Harvester. These are the courses that stick out the most for me. You know it’s bad when you get excited when the bread basket comes out, but even the bread was fruity and sweet so not ideal. I really thought l was going to be eating some delicious, well cooked food. I hardly ever write reviews but l felt the need to in this case as I’ve let bad meals go in the past but when they come with a price tag like this it’s really hard to swallow. I would have truly rather have eaten in MacDonalds. At least l would have had a bad meal but it would have only have cost me £5. I thought the restaurant was nice inside, the staff attentive and efficient and the wine pairing that went with the taster menu was great.

We had a lovely dinner here this week. Crispy sweetbreads and crab salad to start plus beautifully cooked cod with pea puree. Service was a bit slow and various amuses bouches too pernickity, maybe trying for a michelin star? Good wine list and its in a beautiful location overlooking the harbour so you will need to book.

Stayed one night in Vanilla suite - very spacious with quayside views over the sea, lovely! All very clean and comfortable. Delicious continental breakfast brought to the room. Dinner was innovative with different flavours and my vegetarian diet was catered for although no choice. My husbands John Dory was beautifully cooked. We only had starters and main but with the amuse Bouche and canapés and generous portions, there was a lot of food so go there hungry! Special midweek discount made this a very reasonable trip.

After reading so many amazing reviews we thought we’d treat ourselves to the tasting menu with wines. On arrival we weren’t welcomed into the restaurant we made our own way to the tables where we waited for someone to welcome us.
The surroundings, cutlery and crockery are beautiful, top quality.
The first few courses were amazing. We were then served the bbq octopus, citrus corn. The octopus was so chewy and dry and the citrus corn was like sucking a lemon. Not enjoyable. The next course was local squid, basil dashi. It was like soy sauce soup. The only thing you could taste was salt. This left a disgusting taste in out mouths which no amount of water could remove. To be honest it just went from bad to worse. We asked the waitress to stop serving us as we were beginning to feel unwell.
The waitress deducted some money from the bill, we paid and left.
It was an awful evening, sevice was not great. One member of our party asked questions regarding the wine but the questions were never answered.
I would have loved to have paid the whole bill plus tip and of had a the wonderful evening we were expecting. Would never ever return to this restaurant.

There were several changes to the menu last night which would not have mattered had there been a vegetarian option on the menu. Worse than that, I had to ask the waitress what was in the between course appetizer [these were not mentioned on the menu] as I have an allergy and she didn't know. On coming back to say the main ingredient was what I was allergic to, I was questioned by the floor manager if what I said was true. As a substitute I was given a plate of plain beans. Although my chosen dishes were ok, they were definitely on the sweet side. Then right at the end when I said I didn't want a desert I was offered chesses, not on the main menu so there was an alternate vegetarian dish after all!

The restaurant is beautifully situated and the service itself is good in that they are polite and attentive but they have no idea about the food. It isn’t served with any explanation about its origins and the menu is so stark there’s absolutely no hint as to what’s what. I had a crab starter with a watermelon type soup. I asked the waitress if I was supposed do eat them separately or ladle it over the crab. She had no idea and no intention to find out. My husband made a joke about me eating the finger bowl (ie watermelon soup) but they probably wouldn’t know if it was for fingers or not! The amuse bouche was flavourless. The bread was so full of raisins it was like a pudding (delicious but inappropriate). I also had the Halibut dish which quite frankly was a disgusting concoction ! My husband had the lamb though which was beautiful. I asked if the steaks on the menu came with any sort of potato (one would expect fondant or a couple of fancy triple cooked chips with a steak, surely?) but there wasn’t any. It’s all very odd. For the money, utterly not worth it.
