Too busy but the pub just couldn’t cope. Polite staff but they were just rushed off their feet. Drinks ordered were taking up to 30 minutes to arrive with some confusion over who ordered what on occasions. There were no copies of menus, the young waitress had to recall from memory. Food items progressively ran out. We arrived at 1pm, ordered drinks, they arrived 25 minutes later. Ordered food at 1.30, arrived at 2.30. They were too busy to ask how the meal was and difficult to attract anyone’s attention. Nice Sunday lunch but not a brilliant experience.

Thank you for your review, and the praise of our Sunday lunch. I think the fact that you note we were extremely busy explains the rest of your visit. As you can appreciate, the government guidelines of table service only, do strangle the hospitality business. Publicans with gardens like mine or bigger have all struggled to run an efficient garden service (well, most) This would run smoothly if I employed 5/6 extra staff, in which case then there would be no point in me even opening! Wage bill is my highest bill…
I remember during lockdown when we all lined up outside surgeries and supermarkets for up to an hour… we had more patience then. That patience seems to disappear when it comes to hospitality???

Visited today. Helpful and friendly staff. Good selection of beers and the food was very good, reasonably priced and cooked fresh to order. 2 of our party had Sally’s home made chicken and potato curry which they said was delicious and the others opted for the sea bass fillets cooked in lemon and parsley which were very tasty.
We shall definitely be revisiting.

This is a lovely pub. Been coming to it on and off for over 20 years. The management has always been quirky, a bit different, and that's why the place is what it is. IMO there's nothing much better than sitting in the beer garden looking over the millpond towards Thorney Island. In the old days, used to have a wander around the antiques centre next door first. These are difficult times for the hospitality industry and this is a great pub serving pub grub. If you want fancy, over-priced haute cuisine arranged in a circle of foam, there are places near the harbour which will oblige.

Went for lunch today with three others I had a burger and my husband had steak and a pint of beer and the others had vegesausages in a basket.
I was charged An additional £1 for two small onion rings - although only paid half still feel this was expensive for what they provided.
The menu on line was much cheaper than the one given to us in the pub. They did not have enough high chairs for requirements when we visited.
I would not be in a rush to return

Hello,
I’m assuming you were at the same table as the review above? Lots of similarities. I won’t bother repeating myself because you can read my response above.
With regards to the onion rings, you paid 50p not the additional pound you stated, I believe this puts us on par, if not cheaper than fast food chains!

Overpriced, poorly presented and hardly edible! You can get better in a Weatherspoon at 2 meals for £5... greasy bland cottage pie, luke warm steak and ale pie, chips swimming in instant gravy along with the peas. Just awful. I can not recommend enough that you don’t waste your money here.
As for the surroundings, rickety chairs and kids running everywhere and I’m talking about the evening not during the day.
On a positive note the staff were friendly.

Visited this pub on a lovely lunchtime and apart from a few people in the garden it was surprising to see it empty inside. Upon ordering it quickly became apparent why it was empty. Food took almost 40 minutes to arrive and then a 15 minute or more gap between the 1st and last person at our table having their food arrive. Food was overcooked and to be honest not great quality. Maybe the cremation of the chicken and the burger in particular is an attempt to disguise its quality. Best of all the pubs party trick is that some of our starters arrived after our mains. Not good!

Visited the Lord Raglan. Had booked a table a couple of weeks previously for a birthday meal, however when arrived we were told there was no booking, luckily there was plenty of spare tables to move together for 8 people.
My husband and I ordered the burger which arrived very overcooked, asked for another and the waitress arrived ten minutes later with another pair of overcooked burgers. We told her we wanted the money back! She apologised and told us the chef was having "an off day". My daughter's sausages were not cooked well and tasted cheap, my brother in law's pie tasted cheap and my brother's starter came out after the main courses!
Lastly my mother received her meal after nearly all of us had finished and said that the chicken had been overdone. No wonder there were alot of free tables, not impressed!

This place was listed as "recommended" by the property we are staying in and I honestly cannot understand why. It has a lovely aspect but once you go inside you quickly go off the idea of eating there. It feels unclean if you know what I mean. The inside is super tired, old bits and pieces all over the place giving you a strong indication that whoever runs it gave up trying or feeling proud of it, a long time ago. Staff are lovely, we headed outside but the garden is unkempt. Sat at a table with old chewing gum pushed down the side of it so I decided not to look at that again. As we walked through tot he garden I spotted the highchair and honestly you have never seen such a disgusting strap on a baby chair. It turned my stomach. So by that point, I wanted to eat and get out as quickly as I could. Its bar service only and the young women behind the bar were the best part of the experience - friendly and welcoming. We ordered from the tiny menu (around 6 choices only) and wished for the best. The food was ok. It looked clean and basic - stuff that I would put in the oven at home but the whole feel of the place took away any enjoyment of the food really. Price-wise it was on the more expensive side of the meals we had in far nicer places. Sorry to say, but I can only recommend not to go.

Thank you for your review. I always appreciate an honest review. Some of your points have been taken on board and changes have be made. However, I need to point out a few things: our garden is not unkempt. The reason you say that is because we have a ‘patch’ in the middle of the garden that has no grass. If you remember, there was a time where we had to provide outside dining facilities as customers were not allowed the the building. Well, that patch was covered by a huge marquee which we put up so our diners could eat outside. Unfortunately, it is now too late to reseed that grass. This will be rectified next year. What you failed to notice, is our beautiful flowers all around the garden and our lovely brand new fence. The grass less patch seems to have bothered you so much, you missed everything else. We had a smaller menu because the chef was away on holiday and we had a younger sous chef in the kitchen. Safer and wiser to cut the menu right down than risk some more bad reviews on Trip Advisor. You do not say what food you had, so I can not comment on that. However, if I looked at a menu and realised that everything on there is something I can “knock up myself in the oven at home”… I definitely would not have ordered it, “and wish for the best”. We are adults, we have choices in life and we are allowed to make those choices. No one is forced to do something they do not want to do. I hope you enjoyed your stay in lovely Emsworth. Best wishes.

If you come here and don't realise there are quite strict measures in place you must have gone somewhere different to me. The QR reader instructions for T & T are clearly advertised and easy to deal with. The one-way system is effective and easily understood and there are signs everywhere. Wife and I happy that the safety of staff and guests being well considered. Ordering also simple and effective, even on a busy Rishi night. I even got told off for getting too close to the bar which I have no trouble with at all. The garden setting is lovely. Good crowd in but SD well in evidence. Two rounds of drinks and two mains of excellent scampi and chips about £20. Excellent effort. If we visit the area again we'll be back.

First rate really fresh hand-battered haddock and chips with a pint of Seafarers in a lovely garden overlooking the water. What could be better? Food brought out personally by the friendly chef/licensee who came out again to check if we were enjoying his food. We were. Emsworth has plenty of pubs but none with this great harbour view. The inside is historic if a little old style dingy and could maybe do with a little more love, but the lunchtime fish for two offer on the bar has to be the best deal in town. On the basis of this visit we will make a point of returning.

Seeing the below comments I’m in shock! Every time I have visited the Lord Raglan the food has been outstanding, service brilliant and staff are always helpful!!
I Was actually in the pub on Thursday evening the track and trace was extremely visible on entering the pub. Signs everywhere and track and trace scanning! I think this person must have been extremely blind and needs to venture to specsavers! I also had the steak and it was far from tough! It was cooked correctly and to my liking but you can’t please everyone I suppose!!!!!!
I was in the pub a7- till close. People were very careful of social distancing. And not sure of the people swearing but this isn’t the pubs fault just people picking at stuff for no reason!
As for this eat out to help out! People are getting food for half price and need to get a grip of themselves!
Anyway rant over this pub is fantastic and i will certainly keep going to this pub!!!!!!!

We went there to try out the food fo the first time using the eat out to help out scheme. So it was great value obviously. However, the food was delicious. The steak and ale pie was amazing I wish I could make it like that. My wife’s burger was similarly scrumptious. And even the the menu was very limited even the kids sausages were from a local butcher and were similarly great. So all in all an excellent meal so much so we’re going back the next day (today) at full price as it was well worth it without the deal.

Visited Thursday 20th for an evening meal in the garden. If you reply (as you appear to for critical feedback) you will say 'why didn't we say anything but these are points you should know if you take the time. It was a poor experience. Maybe wrong but you appeared to have no track and trace in place. The one way system is good idea but why let everyone ignore it. The back door was continually used to go back in your bar and I mean continual. The food. Steak was awful. Mine cooked medium was tough and my wife's medium to well was the same. Really not worth the money. Seriously give it a try. No steak knives provided which made it worse. Next table didn't get a steak knife either. Salad and chips very mediocre. Asked what bottles of white wine you have? Young girl didn't have a clue. Struggled to find a bottle of Pinot Grigio in the fridge. Local group continually using extreme bad language made matters even worse (no you can't choose your customers). Its tough going for you but most of this is simple to sort. with a bit of attention to detail and training.

Thanks for your review. There is very clear signage EVERYWHERE inside the pub, explaining social distancing rules. A huge map as you enter the clear one way system, guiding you safely through the pub. We use EVE PASS for our track and trace system. Posters on the bar explaining how you use that. There are bar codes on the tables where you simply hold your camera phone above it and it automatically scans you, registering you into the system. It’s simple and straightforward. We have had lots of praise about how secure this system is as we do not keep your details on the premises at all. I don’t see how more secure we can be? The one way system works if everyone follows it. However, there will be a few who don’t. When they are caught doing that staff always explain the correct way of using the one way system. We also expect people to use their own common sense... if someone is walking out, you step aside, let them through and you can go in when it’s safe to do so. Unfortunately, as we all know ‘common sense’ is clearly not that common! We have signs everywhere asking people to respect social distancing. Don’t know how you missed them!
With regards to the steak, I am sorry about that. I had a sous chef on duty and he clearly messed it up. Again, ‘had you said at the time’ a refund would have been given. Writing about it doesn’t help. I really don’t understand people who do this! If I was that unhappy I would say and ask for a refund.
A lot of customers seem to be going out to eateries just to point out negatives at the moment. What about the positives? I am happy for you to email me and I will arrange a refund for you.
I have spoken to my staff about the other points made and they have their own explanations about your visit.
You were so interested in all that was going on around you, you even noticed what the table next to you was doing? Wow!

Such a friendly welcome - Tommy great energy. With my fish allergy the chef was really helpful - came out to talk to me. Great food - lovely outside space but cold day so sat by open fire. Dog friendly as well. A must visit

Why is this pub near the top of the list of local establishments? Signage is poor under the current climate and management appeared both disinterested and unhelpful. The garden overlooks the local marina, and, although there are ample tables, the area is unkempt and lacking care. The staff were very polite, helpful and served customers in a very efficient manner. The interior needs updating and, although we were intending to eat, decided otherwise. A beer and a wine were the most expensive In Emsworth (£9.90) and we only had the one. Very disappointing and lacked leadership.

Hello Mike,
We are at the top because we deserve to be. Not sure what management you encountered because if you had encountered me (landlady) you would definitely remember me and not refer to me as ‘management’. I feel like you need to remember where you were. We do NOT overlook the marina… we overlook slipper pond. Marina is another place in Emsworth. Sorry.
Carol my gardener is very upset that you say our garden is unkempt…. Considering we have the best garden in the village, your comment is not only unfair but an absolute lie.
You think we are expensive??? Try visiting the rest of the pubs in Emsworth, because, the fact you say we are ‘on the marina’ tells me that geographically, you have no clue where you were???? Maybe you were in Portsmouth?
I am a leader and I look forward to you meeting me personally.
Thanks for your custom
