Not been here for a year or two so was looking forward to coming back. The service was good overall and on a Saturday evening they were obviously busy but we were not in any rush so waiting for food was fine. The food wasn't...really worth the wait unfortunately. We had starters of spicy octopus and mackerel pate. Pate fine but dense breadcrumb coating on the octopus rather overwhelmed everything else on the plate. Main course of lamb shank seemed to come with raw vegetable coleslaw rather than "panache vegetables" which was plain weird and it being served in a bowl was odd. Other main course of seafood chowder seemed rather like tinned chicken soup with chunks of crabstick, leftover fish chunks and frozen squid rings...for £17 I was hoping for something way better. Passed on dessert and made a sharp exit. Had the company of a great friend so the poor food didn't spoil a nice evening but won't be coming back anytime soon which is a shame as I've always loved the frenchyness atmosphere of this place. The menu looks great but whoever was the chef that night really made the food overwhelmingly disappointing.More

Nice setting, good service, food ok. Had a meal for my birthday last night. Fried octopus starter was fractionally over done, so it shattered when I tried to cut it. Tasty though. Had a smoked haddock gratin main. Haddock and potatoes good. Sauce had a...slight kick that I couldn’t quite pin point. Topping was a sweet crumble topping and didn’t work for me. My wife’s starter was good and her lamb main was good - if a bit rich. Not expensive and worth a return.More

Great atmosphere and great food. We had the fricassee and stew from the specials board. Both very tasty and authentic. Restaurant started to fill up just after we arrived but, even though they only had one chef on, this didn’t effect the level of service....Desserts, although not all strictly French, we’re also very tasty.More

Delightful meal to celebrate my partners 70th birthday with friends. Love to find a menu where there’s so many things that appeal it’s hard to make a choice. The service was friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. We had a lovely evening and...were all happy with our starters and mains. Reasonable prices for quality food and in a nice setting.More

The food was superb and the service excellent. We ate there on our first night in Wirksworth and enjoyed it so much that we returned the next night of our two-night stay in the area.

Booked at 2.30, didn’t eat til 4- very hungry! Roast was good. Burgers burned to charcoal and cream sauce split so pasta was sitting in a pool of oil. Not as good as it was.

My second visit ( previously a take away in lockdown) We were staying in Wirksworth and Le Minstral was the first place I booked . The first thing you notice is the incredibly friendly staff and brilliant atmosphere. We were seated downstairs which was beautiful,...lots of lights , candles. It was almost like a private booth by the specials board . We actually met and chatted to some lovely people whilst they were walking past or reading the board. We are both vegetarian and there was plenty of choice for us . Our meals were lovely, served hot , tasty and good portions. 100% recommend and cannot wait to return .More

Booked online following a recommendation made where we were staying nearby. We were surprised by the downstairs cellar room which had plenty of character as we didn’t expect that when we arrived. We had beef bourginion and pan roasted haddock followed by tarte au citron...and apple pie. It was all very tasty and perfectly cooked. Staff were friendly and provided great service. Would visit again.More

had the white bait to start which was tasteless and definately from the freezer laid on an uninspiring bed of salad leaves. My wife had a small pot of mushrooms in a sauce that tasted of water and vinegar. main course for me was duck....The meat was a bit over cooked but it had been served on a plate of what i can only describe as the contents of a can of the cheapest vegetable soup you could buy at a budget supermarket. not only did it look awful but it tasted horrible and i couldnt eat it. My wife had a fish dish which tasted bland and covered in cheap dusty bread crumbs. this was served with slices taken from an uncooked, plastic vacume packed, french stick, all soft and spongey. Expensive too even though we didnt pay for the main courses. However the staff were polite and friendly.More

We enjoyed a relaxed Saturday lunch here. Food was all good and staff were friendly and accommodating. Not cheap, but reasonable for the quality on offer. Good coffee too.
