I know this is a tough time for restaurants with COVID and short-staffing, , and maybe that’s why I have been disappointed by recent visits to some of my favorite places in Durham. That was the case last night at Vin Rouge. Here’s why: 1)...a Cabernet Franc recommended by our server was mediocre at best. 2) they no longer serve raw clams, one of my all time favorite menu items, and one of the only local places where you can get them. Since that was one of the main reasons for coming, I was disappointed. 3) i think the server should mention prices when describing specials. The raw oysters were delicious, but they were $3.75 each! I was expecting $12 and got charged $23. I ordered the « poisson du jour, » which was grouper. The fish itself was fine, but it was a fairly small portion served on top of a mix of artichokes, mushrooms, and potatoes which was subtle bordering on bland. I was expecting high 20’s; it was $35.95 plus another $5 for a side salad. Normally I get mussels, which come with a side salad, have a lot more flavor, and are half the price. Had i known, that’s what I would have done. I guess it was my fault for not asking first, but I think it would be helpful if servers provided this information up front. 4) My wife had thé salade Niçoise, which is always excellent, but they were our of anchovies last night. 5) on a more positivé note, thé lemon tart we shared for dessert was exceptional as always. Any restaurant can have an off night, and none of this will discourage me from returning. I just hope that higher prices and diminished quality will not prove to be the « new normal » for some of my favorite places.More

Tables were spaced far apart. Food was delish. What a treat. We each ordered something different and each plate was perfect. Great coffee at brunch.

Because of covid, I ordered takeout. It was supposed to be ready at 7:10 pm. I was waiting for a text from them in the car. Decided to go inside to check. I was there waiting for 15 more minutes. I was in the front...watching food being prepared.I witnessed the cook pull down his mask and taste what he was preparing with his fingers to his mouth! I had ordered bouillabaisse: the portion was very small for the price, plus the broth had no flavor. The worst I had ever had. There are restaurants near this one where I have tasted better. My man is French and he was not impressed. The onion tart was not edible...tasted like it was made 3 days before. The same goes for the beef bourguignon, old, tough and dry. The only thing that was good was the frisee salad with lardon. Something that didn't have to be cooked.......More

We had an amazing time at Vin Rouge, celebrating our anniversary. All staff were wearing masks, and the tables were spaces fast apart to accommodate social distancing. The food was expertly prepared and delicious! We started with crispy sweetbreads and the frisée aux lardons for...starters. The sweetbreads were excellent, lightly fried to crunchy perfection while giving way to the rich, creamy delight within. The salad was also good, with cubed potatoes and tasty smoked bacon. For our entrees, my wife chose the pork chop with scalloped potatoes (gratin dauphinois), and I had the Gratin de macaroni, which I believe is the best thing on the menu. Both were excellent, as always. We finished our meal with two delicate desserts--my wife had the lemon tart, while I decided on the decadent chocolate mousse. We will certainly return, as the food and service were fantastic!More

Great authentic atmosphere with helpful servers. The grouper was good but could have been better. I enjoyed the polenta side dish and my daughters frites! The Mac and cheese was good but could have been creamier. Cheese plate excellent and great wine/champagne list. The desserts...were the highlight!More

Went for our anniversary and were not disappointed. The bacon jam appetizer is a must to pair with the homemade bread! Both the beef and fish dishes were very good as well. Save room for the chocolate mousse!

We have been to endless bistros around the US and this is certainly the best or one of the best. From the bustling ambiance, to the decor, to the service to the dishes that were fab in each instance, I would run to this bistro....And btw I would eat at each of the other restaurant co cents of this group in town. They are all very good!!!More

We have eaten at Vin Rouge about five times, and have recommended it to others. I have always had a very good meal and positive experience. I love the location, the availability of parking and the relaxed atmosphere. Our food while never spectacular has been...consistently reliable and good. We tend to stay with more traditional offerings and just enjoy the experience. Highly recommend and will go again!More

I am not competent. The restaurant's manager is the only person able and supposed to answer your question. I suggest starting your inquiry on Vin Rouge Website. I am sure a gluten free dinner can easily be accommodated... More
