Felt like some fresh seafood for lunch and headed over to Astoria Seafood. This is a fish market / restaurant. You pick what you feel like eating and placing it in a bag. When you pay, you tell them either grilled or fried. Cannot get...any fresher than this. Go early or during the week. Place is a madhouse.More

We had just left a Yankees game and my husband suggested we stop in Long Island City before heading home to get a bite to eat. A friend of his told him about this place and we were like kids in a candy store, not...knowing what to get first. This place is a market, there are displays of fish on ice. You pick out your fish, put it in a bag, it gets weighed and you tell them how you want it cooked. We ordered a greek salad (which was huge and delish) and fried calamari for appetizers. We also ordered lemon potatoes. For entrees my husband ordered a branzino and I had the salmon. Food is very reasonably priced. We sat outside, next time we will bring wine as it's BYOB. Can't wait to go back with friends.More

Great fish -bad customer service is not first-rate. This is the original Astoria Seafood, best known for its displays of fresh fish (there was another one with a similar name on Steinway Street (some years back), where you can select what type of fish you...want to consume. When we entered, the place was packed, so we ordered the bluefish and red snapper up front. Our side orders were baked potatoes and crab cakes. The few items we ordered were costly, and we paid over $50 in cash. The fish, baked potatoes, and crab cakes were excellent otherwise! Because seating was hard to find inside the restaurant, we decided to eat outside. This is where customer service was poor. We tried to eat at one table and then asked to sit somewhere else. On top of that, a waiter came up and asked for a tip from us. That was not cool, and my friend, in disgust, gave the waiter four quarters. Management should review their customer service experienceMore

Our first visit to Astoria was a true experience! Step one - grab several plastic bags and line up to choose your fresh seafood. Step 2 - Now line up to have your selections weighed, decide how you want it prepared and pay. Step 3...- stand out front (be prepared for a 40-45min wait) until they yell out your name and find you a table. Step 4 - enjoy some of the best seafood you will ever have. Did I forget to mention you can (unofficially) bring your own wine/beer to have during your meal? It’s a bit of a sensory overload while you are inside…loud music, people talking….but fun!! We had shrimp, clams, mussels, halibut and salad - $75 for the two of us and we were very full….and extremely happy!!More

Combo fish market and restaurant. Pick out your choice of a vast variety of fresh seafood and fish, have it weighed decide how you want it cooked, grilled in olive oil garlic and lemon, fried or steamed in broth as in clams and mussels. Pick...a soft drink or mineral water. Maybe greek style potatoes, coleslaw and/or garlic bread. BYOB is fine. Maybe BRYO knife and fork because the plastic ones that you are given don't work on lobster. Plenty of outdoor space but be prepared to wait either for a table or at a table outside until the food comes. On this beautiful day here in NYC it was all well worth it. And a small suggestion: Maybe a black board with the next person's name on in so that the waiter doesn't have to run in, listen to the next name on the list, write it down and then call it out with hopefully the right spelling. Or maybe not because then it would be less fun.More

Fresh food, there is no doubt, and a good location on Astoria. Not too far from Manhattan and extremely close to subway (N and W lines on 36th Avenue). Best time to visit this place is everyday (except Sunday) between 3 and 6pm. For my...taste is a little bit filthy (surprisingly, they have grade A!), but this a fish market on the first place, so let's be honest... Customer service doesn't not exist, they curse and yell all the time, but the food is the reason for being here. A delicious octopus is my strong recommendation. My red snapper was burned, thumb down for that (see photo). Plastic cutlery I don't like at all, I suggest you to bring your own silverware (how can I fillet the fish with a small plastic fork and knife?). They don't serve alcohol, it's a BYOB place, but keep in mind that they have only small plastic cups. Also, the place is extremely tight, there is almost no way to turn around, so be advised. In my opinion, this is highly affordable place for sea food, but slightly overrated. I don't think I will come back. My choice is still Kyklades (superb food+service+higher hygiene+almost the same prices). P.S. Be prepared to wait in the evening an hour and a half sometimes, in order to get your table. Way too long in my opinion, especially during a winter season. Better option is to pick your fish or seafood for take out.More

WOW, what a fun experience choosing your fresh seafood, sharing a table and savoring delicious Greek salad. You pick how you want your selection prepared. Bustling place so if you're looking for quiet dinner this isn't your pick. But if you're looking for a fun...experience this is it. We're told lines form out the door closer to main dinner time. We arrived at 4:15 and completed meal by 6.More

If you are looking for a leisurely relaxed dining experience, do not come here. The place is chaotic. We visited on a Friday night and the place was jammed packed, noisy and we had no idea what to do as first time visitors. The wait...staff had minimum English and we had to get directions from fellow customers. Move to the back, grab plastic bags and choose your fish. Wide selection of whole fish, shrimp, calamari, octopus etc. The line to pay was actually a little scary- everyone was crowding in (do not come here if you have claustrophobia or hate crowds!!). Decide grilled or fried, and after paying you wait on the street outside until your name is called. Seating area is small, noisy and most people are drinking byob. Everyone was super friendly and talks to each other, mix of first timers, tourists and locals, groups, solo, old, young- really diverse. Food comes out sporadically, but is great- freshly cooked seafood. However, we waited 2.5 hours from arriving to eating the first dish- if this was a typical restaurant we would have left or complained. This just seems to be the norm here. We also found out one of our dishes was served to another table. There was no refund or alternative offered- just a shrug of the shoulders- and we were ushered out so other guests could have our table. This place wouldn’t have the same charm if it was a well oiled machine, or fancy “seafood restaurant”. Overall it was an experience and we would visit again and bring out of town guests for the great fresh seafood and unique experience, but would visit during a quieter time.More

Service can be really slow, the place looks like a chaotic mess hall, people can be loud and pushy, but also friendly and fun to talk to while you wait -- and patience pays to get a table and to wait for your food after...you finally order. But the fish, oh my, I can forgive almost anything for fish so fresh and so well prepared. Seafood via the waiters is charred and lashed with olive oil and garlic, the fried golden and hot. Avoid the steam-table sides are except for the lemon potatoes or garlic bread. Dessert is standard spanakopita and baklava, but good. No liquor license, but a store is four blocks away, and you almost certainly will have time to go get what you want after you point to your fish and place your order. Remember you are in Queens where over 600 languages are spoken -- the other folks are a real mixing pot of humanity.More
