We went here on a Saturday afternoon in July to have a late lunch (about 2:30pm). The place was half full. We were not acknowledged right when we walked in, but once we were, we were greeted cordially and given a table. Our server was...pleasant, he assured us that the food they serve is “as authentic as you can get,” and he reviewed the specials of the day. We were given a bottle of cold water to drink. I asked our server if they had freshly brewed iced tea (a staple item for me), but all they had was Snapple. I declined it, because it’s just not the same.
We both opted for the Saturday special, namely Feijoada, which is a Brazilian stew made of black beans, beef, and chorizo. It came with farofa (toasted yuca flour with bacon bits), white rice, collard greens (sliced thinly and seasoned), salsa, and orange slices. The farofa was a totally new experience for me, but I enjoyed it. I found the collard greens and salsa to be excellent. The stew was quite good, too, although the one minor criticism I would make of it is that the meat mixture was not chunks of meat. Instead, there were bones and other pieces of a fatty, leathery substance (it may have been pig’s ears, based on what another reviewer said). I accept that these items are authentic components of the dish, but since my own palate is not accustomed to these kinds of things, I was less than satisfied with them. Overall, the meal was very satisfying. The portions were quite adequate and the items were flavorful.
The temperature inside the restaurant was just a little on the warm side, but I have to acknowledge that we went on a very hot day.
Some helpful things to know:
1) It’s located just in from the corner of Ferry Street and Jefferson Street, next to Our Lady of Fatima Church. They are a five minute drive from the Prudential Center and NJPAC.
2) There is parking right along the street in front of the restaurant. We managed to get a spot without any problem. There is also a parking deck one block up from the place. To get to it, just continue on Jefferson Street past the restaurant to the next corner.
3) As far as I could see/count, the place seats 33 people in three areas: the main dining area (20), a small room next to the bar (10), and the bar itself (3). They had two tables and some extra chairs out front for people who want to sit outside in the warm weather. Probably another 10 people or so could sit there.
4) On Fridays there is live music. They strongly suggest making a reservation on weekends because they get very busy.
5) It’s BYOB. If you forget to bring a bottle, there is a liquor store across the street.
All in all, our experience was a very good one. I would certainly eat here again, and I would recommend the place to others.
